Witch School First Degree: Lessons in the Correllian Tradition ReviewI don't regret buying this book since it was only five dollars. The mental energy exercises and meditation techniques have been helpful to me. As for the rest of it, the author is pretentious, snobby, and has never heard of the word "research." I'm not talking about theory: I mean known facts that he talks about like he's an expert and are completely and totally wrong.
He claims that there are only two types of religion: book and Pagan. Every religion other than Paganism, he claims, has a book considered infallible and written by a god. Of the more than 10,000 world religions, that explains about three of them. He claims it's four book religions because the Satanic Bible is supposedly based around the god Jehovah and his contract with Abraham. It supposedly teaches that hell, Jehovah, Day of Judgment, etc, are all real. Had he done two seconds of internet research, he would have realized that Satanism is a form of atheism and has nothing to do with Jehovah and Abraham. Two friggin' seconds of research! That pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the book: talking big about stuff he knows nothing about.
He claims that "we" (apparently he thinks he speaks for all of us) "regard monotheism as an extremely primitive and limiting point of view." There are so many things wrong with that sentence! First of all, the definition of primitive is "oldest and closest to nature," not what he used it to mean ("stupid"). Second, he maybe missed the part about Wicca where you're supposed to respect the beliefs of others, and hilariously, he puts this sentence right before the phrase "Help us understand the nature of Universal Deity." Deity. Singular.
He's a monotheist saying that monotheism is stupid while using words that don't mean stupid.
One thing, I liked, however, was that in his description of deities, he included many, many cultural representations of Goddess and God. Most Wicca books completely skip Africa, the Americas, Eastern Europe, Asia, etc. when giving examples of deities. Kudos to him for writing about gods from many, many different cultures.
I actually do recommend this book (if you can find it super cheap) because, while I think they focus too much on chakras to the exclusion of other important energies, the exercises really are good. They will most likely help you learn to manifest will and connect with nature and divinity. Just remember as you read that if he presents something as fact, it's probably rubbish. Read it with a whole shaker of salt.
If you can only afford one, a far better series is Christopher Penczak's Temple of Witchcraft books. His exercises, of which there are a lot more than in this book, are excellent and very helpful, and actually very similar to these, and he actually takes the time to learn about what he's talking about. His books are more comprehensive, more scientific, better researched, more in tune with the ideals and ethics of Wicca, and more plentiful (34 compared to Highcorrell's 12 in the first book of each series). Personally, I like using them together, but if I had to chose one, Christopher would win, hands down.Witch School First Degree: Lessons in the Correllian Tradition Overview
