Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair ReviewThis book is a good book for the repair of bicycles. However, the writing tends to be sparse and direct. While this in its self is not bad, often more writing can help a less experienced reader in better conceptually understanding how the thing works. On the plus side, you will never have to guess which park tool to use as the author references each tool by name and part number.
As another reviewer mentioned, I feel that the Bicycling Mag/Todd Downs book is a better value. Downs has a casual writing style that makes the reading easy. He covers much more information including some history and the pros and cons of different types of conponets. This book includes both photos and drawings, while the Park book only uses photos. Drawings are a plus and they show views (sections or cut-a-ways) that are difficult to achieve using only photos.
I guess the best way to summarize the difference is to say that the Bicycling book is produced by a publishing company staffed with editors and artists. Their sole business is publishing, so they are experts in written communication. Park is a tool company and their manual reads as though it was written by people who make and use tools, i.e. machinists. That's not bad, it just results in a different style of book.
For me, I preferred the Bicycling book as I enjoyed the extra information. Both books seemed good on the technical info...Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair OverviewThe Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is a comprehensive manual of over 130 bicycle repairs and maintenance procedures. Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance ReviewAll in all the book is not too bad but there aren't many books against which to compare it. I think that many adjustments and some repairs could be successfully undertaken from following the author's guidelines. But the book is uneven. Throughout the book there is a shortage of technical detail or information that could have easily been given. Sometimes it is critical, sometimes not.
For example in dealing with chains, there is no mention of chain identification such as a Hyperglide or HG chain despite the ubiquity of Shimano chains. Or it is stated that nine speed chains are more narrow than those for 7 or 8 speeds. Well, what is the measurement? Or the author instructs to drive the old pin all the way out in doing chain maintenance on an HG chain. Usually it is much easier to reconnect the chain with part of the old pin still in. It is stated that a Shimano tool does not damage the plates of a Shimano chain but others do. Well, Park tools are by the most purchased tool by home enthusiasts. Does a CT3 chaintool tool cause damage? The reader or future home repair person is left to wonder. In fact there is almost total absence of exact tool identification in the entire book. That is the kind of thing that a beginner needs to know.
In adjusting derailleurs presetting the barrel adjusters is not done. Setting the front derailleur limit screws before tightening the cable is not done. It is this kind of inconsistency in most every chapter that plagues this book. But the beginner would have no way on knowing this. So that is why I must qualify the chances of a person following this book having success in his or her repair.
A more complete book is the Barnett's Manual. But of course it is about four times as expensive and it too is not without its problems. It attempts to cover all types of bikes but its attention to detail and specifications and procedures can often overwhelm rather than really help the reader. The bottom line is that if you know next to nothing about bikes, you can learn a lot from this book. But there is still lots more to learn. Seek out other sources. Use the internet.Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance Overview

Zinn & the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance ReviewMountain biking is a little different than most sports, you're usually out in the wilderness, miles away from the nearest phone or road, and putting yourself (and your bike) through a pretty grueling workout. In 'Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance' Lennard Zinn does a great job of making sure that if the bike part of the equation fails, you'll know what to do. From suggesting what tools you should carry with you, teaching you how to use them, and giving you a quick lesson on how each work, this book covers it all.
The book uses illustrations instead of photos, so it's easy to tell what's going on, and it covers all the different types (and eras) of components that you'll find. Coverage ranges from the basic (changing a flat tire) to the complex (changing your fork or bottom braket) but is clear throughout.
I highly recommend this to anyone who's doing serious riding and wants to learn more about how to tune and fix their bike. As your bike grows older and you take longer rides, things WILL break or wear out, and knowing what to do in those cases is well worth the price of the book.Zinn & the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance Overview
