Professional LINQ (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewAlthough it is a bit dry and dictionaryesque at times, kudos to Scott Klein on writing a solid book on LINQ and providing a lot of detail as to the specifics.
However, the editing of the book is absolutely terrible, particularly for one in the Wrox P2P series. There are numerous typos throughout the book, as well as areas where the content is simply wrong. For example, in one area (page 77), he describes a LINQ query as grouping by the last name, then displaying the first and middle names concatenated together, when in reality the code is grouping by the FIRST name and concatenating the middle and last together.
This might sound like I am nit-picking. However, when covering a topic like this where there are new and non-intuitive items (such as method syntax and lambda expressions) being discussed, it is critically important that the description of the example actually matches the example. Considering that the book rarely lists the syntax format itself, mismatches can lead to "learning" incorrect information.
Were the editing better, I would give this a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
Oh, on another note.. Be aware that this book was based on Beta releases.. The Microsoft Expression Web Developer's Guide to ASP.NET 3.5: Learn to create ASP.NET applications using Visual Web Developer 2008 ReviewI must have purchased 10 books on how to develope a website from the ground up. Within the first 5 chapters, without fail, something integral to the entire website that they take for granted working, wouldn't work for me, and after a week or two of trying to fix the issue, I would normally give up. I repeated this process for about the past 6 months.
Some background on me, I'm 28, I have a BS in computer science, but generally learned nothing in college, of business value anyway. I am lightly familiar with coding/designing, if given enough time I could read the code and tell you about what most things do in C++ or VB, (And their .net equivalents), but ask me to program something, and I wouldn't even know where to start. This is why I am heavily dependant on any programing examples in a book working...
This book is definitely more a designers guide to building a website, but by that, I mean it shows you how to create a website from the ground up, and every short cut possible where you can have Visual Web Developer (VWD) button, or option do the work of coding. This is like a god send for people like me, that want to learn coding, but not as badly as we want to learn how to create .NET websites. I didn't get stuck for more than a few minutes anywhere.
There are no "stories from the trenches" that many books put in just to fill in space and bore you inbetween what you actually want to know. This book is VERY concisely written telling you what you need to know. This book does not go into great depth in any great part, it briefly touches on just about everything you could need to run your own website though and makes recommendations for either websites or books to purchase to get additional information.
In conclusion, this book is great for beginners, and I would, and have recommended it to everyone I know who, similar to me, wants to create a professional looking website, that doesn't have the programing skills to make it happen. Being the one of the few developers in my group that work with the latest "cutting edge" technology, and with no one to answer the questions I have, this book has simply been the fountain of knowledge I'd been looking for. Definitely a must-read for those wishing to utilize the latest and greatest.
The book is well organized, and the writing style makes it an easy read (usually technical books put me to sleep, but not this one). Programming ASP.NET 3.5 ReviewThis is an excellent book on ASP.NET development. It skips over the typical "how to create a button" approach of most books and just covers the necessary information to really use some of the more interesting ASP.NET features including AJAX. Each of the controls that are covered also get a treatment for how to enhance them with AJAX.
The book also covers some of the unfamiliar areas of ASP.NET such as lifecycle management, caching, page and master directives and HTTP handlers. The book also spends quite a bit of time discussing the features that were added in v2.0 such as web parts and themes. This is missing in many books.
The only real flaw I see in the book is that it mentions v3.5 but in reality almost everything it covers is v2.0+. Someone who is only concerned with v2.0 might skip over this book but that would be a mistake. It contains enough information to be useful to anyone doing ASP.NET programming from v2.0 on. While it won't teach beginner ASP.NET folks how to write apps it will help those already familiar with the basics of ASP.NET to write impressive, performant apps under v2.0+.Programming ASP.NET 3.5 Overview
