Aptana RadRails: An IDE for Rails Development: A comprehensive guide to using RadRails to develop your Ruby on Rails projects in a professional and productive manner ReviewI do not believe this book was edited by a professional. If it were, it would never have been published.
Reading this book was like watching Fisher Stevens in the original "Short Circuit" movie (If you don't remember, he was the scientist; good guy, helpful and entertaining but constantly threw out one-liners that showed a limited command of the English language). Imagine an entire book written by his character and you have this book, Aptana RadRails.
Read the following statements with the Fisher Stevens accent and see what I mean: "If you still didn't, it's high time to start your Eclipse." or "Neat, uh?" or "Let's face it! We cannot help ourselves when a new gadget falls into our hands." And, yes, each of these statements is an actual quote from Aptana RadRails. Though they have potential entertainment value, they demonstrate the lack of quality in the writing of this book.
I am sure the author knows the material. He could probably do amazing things with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Eclipse, or RadRails. However, technical writing is also a skill, just not one mastered by the "author" of this book.
Quality products like Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Eclipse, and RadRails deserve professional treatment.
Unfortunately, this book did not deliver.
BTW: My employer has a policy that I include a disclaimer on any commentary that I deliver on the web. Here it is: this review does not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.Aptana RadRails: An IDE for Rails Development: A comprehensive guide to using RadRails to develop your Ruby on Rails projects in a professional and productive manner OverviewAptana RadRails is an Integrated Development Environment for Ruby on Rails projects. Built on top of the well-known Eclipse platform, RadRails provides all the tools you need to create a whole Rails application from a single interface, allowing you to focus on the creative part of the development as your IDE takes care of the mechanics. This book is for Ruby on Rails developers who want to make the most of the framework by using an Integrated Development Environment. Even though the book explains everything you need to follow the contents, the focus is on how to use the tool and not on the Rails framework itself, so previous working knowledge of Rails is highly advisable. Previous knowledge of Eclipse is not necessary.

Pro NetBeans IDE 6, Rich Client Platform Edition (Expert's Voice in Java) ReviewThis is the 'help' menu that Sun should have provided. The author offers a broad view of what NetBeans has to offer from basic installation, to detailed java application examples, to de-bugging and version control; much more than I anticipated. Being more of an 'example type' person, I'd like to have seen more examples, but to keep the book content balanced I assume the author had to draw the line somewhere. I've tried finding other 'current' (NetBeans version 6 or higher) and there's nothing out there that compares to this book. Well worth an Amazon purchase.Pro NetBeans IDE 6, Rich Client Platform Edition (Expert's Voice in Java) OverviewPro NetBeans IDE 6 Rich Client Platform Edition focuses on enabling the reader to rapidly develop Java-based Rich Client Platforms (RCP) or graphical user interface (GUI) front-ends for standalone or Web applications using API buttons, functions, and features available in the open source agile NetBeans IDE (Integrated Development Environment) platform.NetBeans IDE 6 is mostly based on Java SE 6, Sun's Java client platform (This is entirely different from the NetBeans IDE 5.5 Enterprise Edition plug-ins or add-on packs that are mostly based on Java EE 5, Sun's Java enterprise edition. Just as Java SE 6 is different from Java EE 5, so is NetBeans 6 different from NetBeans 5.5. NetBeans 6 is not a direct upgrade from NetBeans 5.5).Moreover, Pro NetBeans IDE 6 Rich Client Platform Edition discusses the plug-in options available for RCP development, including JSF (JavaServer Faces) as well as the new Struts Action Framework 2.0 and JRuby for bringing Ruby on Rails feature set to Java via NetBeans development.

NetBeans IDE Programmer Certified Expert Exam Guide (Exam 310-045) (Certification Press) ReviewIn the last few years I have seen the propensity of companies looking to hire to depend on the results of standardized exams to verify prospective employees possess the required skills. The best way to prepare and ultimately pass these exams is with a book such as this.
This book is designed to allow the reader to familiarize themselves with the exam objectives and to easily locate the parts of the book that cover each objective.
Each topic is covered extensively followed by an exam geared toward allowing the reader to gauge their understanding of the topic. I found this approach particularly useful in preparing for the exam.
What I also liked about this book is it can double as a NetBeans IDE reference guide. I have always been an eclipse guy and I recently got a gig in a NetBeans shop. I was relieved at how quickly I was able to start using the IDE with the help of this book. I particularly liked the Testing and Profiling section.
In general, I found this book to be a clear, concise, and well written and an excellent way to study for and pass the IDE Programmer Certified Expert Exam.

Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 ReviewI've been using Oracle SQL Developer I think since the very first initial betas. I could never stand the TOAD interface and the few bugs I encountered with SQL Developer were never bothersome enough to stop using the tool.
Over the years SQL Developer has matured very nicely and now is very stable and feature rich.
Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 by Sue Harper covers the latest release for SQL Developer - 2.1. This release brought a lot of stability to the project and also introduced the new Data Modeler from Oracle.
I've been skimming through the book for the last week or so. I honestly thought since I've been using SQL Developer for so long there would be very little new to me in the book but I've been pleasantly surprised and have picked up a lot of small tips that have helped me work smarter and more efficiently with SQL Developer.
The book covers quite a bit:
* Install, configure, customize, and manage your SQL Developer environment
* Includes the latest features to enhance productivity and simplify database development
* Covers reporting, testing, and debugging concepts
* Meet the new powerful Data Modeling tool - Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler
* Detailed code examples and screenshots for easy learning
A few useful tips I've picked up since reading the book have been:
* The ability to highlight and filter data in the grids. This is really useful when you are trying to dig through some complicated data looking for very particular information.
* Using bind variables in the worksheet.
* The code formatter - cleaning up my mess!
What else does the book cover? There are chapters devoted to PL/SQL, dubugging and tuning, extending SQL Developer, source control integration (using Subversion) and a large chapter on the Data Modeler which I'm just waiting for a new project to start to begin exploring that particular tool.
If you are just getting started using SQL Developer I'd highly recommend the book. It will get you up to speed quickly and seems useful as a quick reference. If you are an experienced SQL Developer user I still think the added section on the new Data Modeler will be quite useful.Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 OverviewCovering SQL Developer fundamentals as well more intermediate and advanced topics, this book uses in-depth explanation and detailed examples to help you get the most out of Oracle SQL Developer. The book has a modular structure, so that you can dip into any chapter that covers your current area of focus and get going. This book is for Oracle developers who want to ease their database development, and enhance their productivity using Oracle SQL Developer. You should have a programming knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL, and a general familiarity with Oracle database concepts.

Eclipse ReviewIf only this book had stayed on course. Chapters one through three are a great introduction to installing Eclipse and using it to work with Java applications. It then takes a turn away from Eclipse by covering CVS in chapter four, and then continues into a basic Java development book in all of the chapters that follow. If I wanted a book on how to develop Struts I would buy Programming Jakarta Struts. I don't need chapter ten to give me a cursory glimpse into Struts programming. Only the first hundred pages are really about Eclipse. Which is a shame because there is so much to say about the Eclipse platform. I can't recommend this book.Eclipse Overview
Java programmers know how finicky Java can be to work with. An omitted semi-colon or the slightest typo will cause the Java command-line compiler to spew pages of annoying error messages across your screen. And it doesn't fix them--that's up to you: fix them, compile again, and hope that nothing goes wrong this time.

Eclipse, the popular Java integrated development environment (IDE) provides an elegant and powerful remedy for this common, frustrating scenario. It doesn't just catch your errors before you compile, it also suggests solutions. All you need to do is point and click. And it's free--what could be better? Still, if you're like most programmers, mastering a new technology--no matter how productive it will make you in the long run--is going to take a chunk out of your productivity now. You want to get up to speed quickly without sacrificing efficiency.

O'Reilly's new guide to the technology, Eclipse, provides exactly what you're looking for: a fast-track approach to mastery of Eclipse. This insightful, hands-on book delivers clear and concise coverage, with no fluff, that gets down to business immediately. The book is tightly focused, covering all aspects of Eclipse: the menus, preferences, views, perspectives, editors, team and debugging techniques, and how they're used every day by thousands of developers.Development of practical skills is emphasized with dozens of examples presented throughout the book.

From cover-to-cover, the book is pure Eclipse, covering hundreds of techniques beginning with the most basic Java development through creating your own plug-in editors for the Eclipse environment. Some of the topics you'll learn about include:

Using Eclipse to develop Java code
Testing and debugging
Working in teams using CVS
Building Eclipse projects using Ant
The Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT)
Web development
Developing Struts applications with Eclipse
From basics to advanced topics, Eclipse takes you through the fundamentals of Eclipse and more. You may be an Eclipse novice when you pick up the book, but you'll be a pro by the time you've finished.

Visual Basic 2008 Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewYou might initially think that this is going to be one of those big books with a few examples and a lot of fluff; well, you'd be wrong. This is a big book because it's absolutely packed with really useful examples. Rod takes you through just about every feature of Visual Basic 2008 and he does it with examples. These aren't just the usual academic sort of examples either; you'll be able to use many of them as a source of code for your own applications.
Of course, there are also books on the market that do have good examples, but the explanations stink. Rod takes time to thoroughly explain the examples and the explanations are clear, so you won't have any trouble understanding them. In short, this book has the best of everything.
You probably won't need another book for common business programming needs. That said, some specialty items are missing. You won't find a lot about PInvoke in this book, but then again, most people don't need PInvoke for their business applications. The LINQ coverage is also a tad light, but this technology is only now taking off, so Rod is right in keeping the various coverages in perspective. Overall, this is the book to get if you want to know how to work with Visual Basic!Visual Basic 2008 Programmer's Reference (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewProviding programmers and developers of all skill levels with a comprehensive tutorial and reference to Visual Basic (VB) 2008, Microsoft MVP Rod Stephens presents a broad, solid understanding of essential topics on the latest version of VB. He explains the forms, controls, and other objects that VB furnishes for building applications in a modern windows environment. Plus, he examines the powerful development environment that makes VB such a productive language, and he delves into the VB language itself to show you how to use it to perform an array of important development tasks.
Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

Eclipse IDE Pocket Guide ReviewI agree with the previous reviewer (Thomas Duff) that this little sucker can be used as get-up-to-speed-quick guide for a complex product. I found the Eclipse on-line help and tutorials to be voluminous, but lacking in... I don't know, "usability" maybe? There's so much of it (like the product's menus and options) that it's difficult to find out how to do the 80% of the normal, everyday stuff that developers do. (You hear the same complaint about Microsoft Word.)
Anyway, if you follow this guide you'll get a quick tour of how to do the "usual stuff", i.e. the 80%. I thought the chapters on "Tips and Tricks" and "Help and Community" were especially useful. I could have done without 30 page Appendix on "Commands".Eclipse IDE Pocket Guide Overview
Eclipse is the world's most popular IDE for Java development. And although there are plenty of large tomes that cover all the nooks and crannies of Eclipse, what you really need is a quick, handy guide to the features that are used over and over again in Java programming. You need answers to basic questions such as: Where was that menu? What does that command do again? And how can I set my classpath on a per-project basis?

This practical pocket guide gets you up to speed quickly with Eclipse. It covers basic concepts, including Views and editors, as well as features that are not commonly understood, such as Perspectives and Launch Configurations. You'll learn how to write and debug your Java code--and how to integrate that code with tools such as Ant and JUnit. You'll also get a toolbox full of tips and tricks to handle common--and sometimes unexpected--tasks that you'll run across in your Java development cycle.

Additionally, the Eclipse IDE Pocket Guide has a thorough appendix detailing all of Eclipse's important views, menus, and commands.

The Eclipse IDE Pocket Guide is just the resource you need for using Eclipse, whether it's on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Put it in your back pocket, or just throw it in your backpack. With this guide in hand, you're ready to tackle the Eclipse programming environment.
