Oracle JDevelopment 10g: Empowering J2EE Development ReviewSometimes you just get lucky. You write a book about a fairly obscure and expensive Java IDE and then, without any warning, the company that makes the IDE releases it to the general public for free. The book is mostly a summary of the features of JDeveloper and doesn't go in deep into any area. If you are interested in a book to get you started with JDeveloper then this might fill your need. If you are looking for a book to show you the power of JDeveloper and help you get deep into its capabilities then this isn't the book for you.
The book has some major shortcomings; first and foremost that it was written using the preview version of 10g. Because of this there are some screen differences and the flow isn't always exactly as described. It would have been better if the author had waited until the final release version. Also, because JDeveloper was formerly a purchased product, there is quite a bit of information available free from the Oracle web site. You can find tutorials, demos, product tours, etc on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Finally, the book doesn't cover writing your own custom extensions and instead points the reader to OTN.
So what does the book offer? It is a fairly basic overview of the features available in JDeveloper. The author looks at servlet/jsp development, UML, web services, EJB, database interaction, Swing, and a few other features including the Application Development Framework (ADF). It covers everything at a fairly high level so at the end of the book you might not know how to do a lot in JDeveloper but you will know what JDeveloper is capable of doing. There really isn't a better JDeveloper book on the market however. A book about JDeveloper with the detail available in the many Eclipse books is still waiting to be published.Oracle JDevelopment 10g: Empowering J2EE Development OverviewOracle JDeveloper 10g: Empowering J2EE Development offers a look at the Oracle9i tool JDeveloper 9.0.5 (a fully functional, freely downloadable tool), and takes developers through designing a single project from start to finish. It touches on the various aspects of the tool's environment which begins with the UML design aspects, moves along to the J2EE components including Web Services and deployment, discusses the plug-ins available to use with JDeveloper, and wraps up with troubleshooting tips and a quick reference guide. The book will enable even experienced Java developers to be more proficient and productive using JDeveloper.

Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook ReviewThe authors told us in the introduction part of this book that it is for "both Oracle developers who want to make the transition to the J2EE environment and also Java developers who want to leverage the productivity tools and frameworks available in JDeveloper". The authors have done an good job to satisfy this scope, though I feel time by time that this is book is actually written for Oracle developers who have already exposed to Java/J2EE technology and also J2EE developers who possess basic knowledge about Oracle database technology. Otherwise, I do not recommend you to start your journey from this book. It could be too difficult. Further more, if you want to learn how to use JDeveloper 10g as your Java development tool, this book is not designed for you.
This book gives a good overview of the introductory information about JDeveloper 10g and many related J2EE technologies developed by Oracle. Such overview coverage is further enhanced by about 25 well-designed step-by-step hands-on practices, which are very helpful.
It is true that you may find a lot of learning material from Oracle Technology Network. However, I feel this book offers the unique value by covering this quite extensive and diversified subject in an organized way. By reading this book, you will certainly improve your productivity since JDeveloper 10g is a great tool and since otherwise you may feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of information you may find online.
This book is based on Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release of version 9.0.5.1. The current Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release is of version 10.1.2. I found some of the step-by-step instructions may need slight modification due to the difference of the two versions, though I do not think it posses much difficult to any experienced readers.
Chapter 5, Java Language Concepts for JDeveloper Work, gives a very brief overview of Java concepts. Well, if you need to read this chapter, you are not ready to read this book yet. The good news is that this chapter is only about 30 pages long, less than 5% of this thick book. The development of the rest of the story is in a quite logic and readable order.
The authors explain to us that "this book is a `handbook' not in the sense of a complete guide to all areas of the tool, but, .., a guide for creating J2EE applications using JDeveloper". It is interesting why they still insist to call it a handbook. This book covers only many of the basic features of JDeveloper. If you are advanced, and if you need quickly find a good coverage on an important but advanced features, most likely this is not the book that will give you an answer. Many of the books by Oracle Press are already written in somewhat quite a technical manner. Calling it a handbook may actually scare away those who are new to 10g. You do not start studying a subject by reading a handbook, do you?Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook OverviewCreate web and database applications with Oracle JDeveloper 10g--the complete, integrated Java development environment--with help from this comprehensive, real-world resource. Many chapters contain hands-on practices and source code examples reinforcing vital concepts. It's all here--from the nuts-and-bolts of J2EE applications, servlets, and JavaServer Pages technology to advanced development using the Oracle Application Development Framework. From the exclusive publishers of Oracle Press books, Oracle JDeveloper 10g Handbook will have you developing Java-based applications in no time.

Oracle JDeveloper 11g Handbook: A Guide to Fusion Web Development (Osborne ORACLE Press Series) ReviewI was hoping for a book that would provide an in-depth discussion of applying this technology to my business problem. And frankly, I am disappointed. I suppose that my chief disappointment is that the book seems to digress too quickly into a tutorial. For example, I was interested in how to use a popup dialog box. There is no coverage of popup dialog boxes outside the chapters where one builds a sample application. Another of the key concepts that separates ADF Faces technology from Java Server Faces is the built in partial page rendering available in the ADF components. The authors devote one page to a general discussion of the technology, glossing over some important details in my opinion, then digress into another series of tutorials. While tutorials are great if I am building the sample application, everyone I speak with agrees that tutorials generally fall short when it comes to applying the technology to real business problems. Additionally, no place that I have worked is interested in paying you while you build the sample application in order to learn the technology. We need books that allow us to quickly apply the technology to our business problems. In my case, my business problem is more complex than simple master detail relationships and persisting data to a database. Perhaps my review would be more positive if my business problem were that simple.
Another place where the book falls short is that it fails to discuss the what the various controls on the property inspector are for, leaving us guessing and in many cases simply wondering.
If you are looking for a reasonably good tutorial, showing you how to build a typical CRUD application backed by a database, then this might be for you. If you are looking for an in depth discussion of the technology, and guidance in making design decisions for your own application, you are likely to be disappointed.
I come from a web development background having done Java EE for more than 6 years, including HTML, Java Script, JSP, EJB, and JDBC to name a few technologies. I have worked in all layers from the database to the user interface, using JDeveloper, Eclipse, and WebSphere to name a few integrated development environments I have worked in. So I am not new to web development on the Java platform.
In short, this book disappointed me. I still think the market needs a good book on applying this promising technology.
