Robert Lacoste's The Darker Side: Practical Applications for Electronic Design Concepts from Circuit Cellar ReviewAs a long time reader of Circuit Cellar Magazine, I have seen many authors come and go; most of them excellent, none bad. Robert, in my opinion, is in the 'excellent' category. So, when Circuit Cellar advertised Robert's forthcoming book, I of course put my order in here at Amazon. I received the book and have been reading it cover to cover. I was not disappointed. You should be aware, however, that most of the chapters are updated versions of Robert's Circuit Cellar articles with corrections, along with some new material (FFT tutorial and appendices). Personally, I was not disappointed as it is nice to have Roberts's collection in one manuscript. If you don't have a subscription to Circuit Cellar (why don't you?) the book will be of particular more value to you and save you the time of searching for Robert's articles. If you do have a subscription to Circuit Cellar (particularly an electronics version), you will have a corrected version of Robert's articles that is more current and value if you have not read his material in the past. You will find that some of the listings (Scilab in particular) were misprinted (spaces inserted in between variable syllables, but this is a minor irritation. Every book has its bloopers; these types of bloopers are no big deal if you are reading the article to learn and expand upon anyway. There is a companion web site with file downloads.Much of what is contained in the book can be repeated with free software (Scilab, MPLAB, PUFF, QUCS, etc.), some projects require purchased hardware (DDS chips, PLL, and other discrete components). Again, that should not be an issue to the serious hobbyist/engineer. I don't know for sure, but based on Robert's tools, I'd say he's a fan of open sourced software. Infact, there were a few open source projects I read about in this book I was not aware of (QUCS in particular). Many of the chapters use specialized equipment that many do not have access to (e.g. a spectrum analyzer) but that's a side effect of the topic and shouldn't present too big of a barrier to the resourceful reader.
