Ubuntu Unleashed 2008 Edition: Covering 8.04 and 8.10 (4th Edition) ReviewThe book contains lots of misinformation and long outdated notions, and approaches things in a way that doesn't make sense either for Ubuntu novices or those experienced with Linux.
E.g. on pages 30 and 31 it indicates that Ubuntu 8.04 doesn't enable Universe and Multiverse by default, which has not been true for a while.
E.g. In its introduction to Python on page 561 it says "Although PHP is fundamentally similar to Java and Perl, Python is closer to C and Modula-3, and so might look unfamiliar at first." Java and PHP are light-years apart, and saying Python is closer to C is bizarre.
The section on backups recommends tape drives for many classes of user - a slow, expensive and long outdated technology.
It wastes people's time talking about telnet.
Most everywhere I look, there is misinformation. I'm going to stop looking now.
I won this book in a raffle, and plan to recycle it rather than confusing someone else by giving it away.
There are much better Ubuntu books out there by folks that actually work on the distribution, like the "Official Ubuntu Book" (3rd Edition) by Benjamin Mako Hill, Corey Burger, Jonathan Jesse, and Jono Bacon.Ubuntu Unleashed 2008 Edition: Covering 8.04 and 8.10 (4th Edition) Overview

Ubuntu Linux Secrets ReviewThis is basically a beginners approach towards the Ubuntu GNU/Linux. Although I'm a tech-savy I think I learned something from it, nonetheless.
The first three parts are pretty basic, only PART4: Using the Ubuntu Server and PART5: Programming in Ubuntu are worth reading for someone with some knowledge of how the OS works and is interested in those areas.
I would recommend it to those new to Ubuntu and GNU/Linux in general, you'll definitely learn some "secrets" of how to use Ubuntu from it.Ubuntu Linux Secrets OverviewThe everyday Linux user can easily get overwhelmed by the complexity of the new software that exists when creating an Ubuntu system. This book covers the basics of creating a new system from scratch and explains what software is installed. I was mostly looking for new features that has been added to ubuntu 9.10. Sadly didn't find a lot of new features that are specific to ubuntu 9.10. Most of the material in this book are general Linux / ubuntu. Some of the content are old and not being used in ubuntu 9.10 & some new features in 9.10 are not even mentioned. For example, 9.10 uses GRUB2 which is the default boot loader. No where in this book ever mentioned about GRUB2. Beginning Ubuntu Linux ReviewHaving been a "Newbie" to the Ubuntu world up to a year ago, making use of this book was a revelation, as it is easily readable and allows for a very shallow learning curve with this operating system and its associated sets of applications. I also own the 4th edition (Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition) of this book and this latest round adds more details to items like Networking, mobile wireless communications and other pieces of the software that really make it easy for someone to install and operate very well Ubuntu 10.04. I especially enjoyed the history lesson at the beginning of the book, and the quirky but candid reasoning behind the rise of open-license software and Ubuntu in general. Linux is a much more hands-on operating system and the writers make a very good effort in listing many resources that one can tap into to adapt, improve and generally tweak Ubuntu 10.04 to look, feel and operate as one would like. Especially helpful was the Appendix A, where a large number of "BASH" commands are listed and explained, a must for any Linux user to be able to come to grip with using the "Terminal" window. To this end I also purchased the book - "Ubuntu Linux Toolbox"Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for Ubuntu and Debian Power Users

Ubuntu Unleashed 2011 Edition: Covering 10.10 and 11.04 (6th Edition) ReviewAt the time I'm writing this there's one review below written by Mr. Stump who is spiteful because he wiped out his Windows file system.
So let me offer some advice:
This book mentions a program called Wubi that will allow you to install Ubuntu from within Windows (in MINUTES I might add) and won't wipe out your MBR or your files because you ignorantly hit "Format disk" without knowing exactly what it meant.
Now, I have tried to use Linux a few times in the past and the learning curve makes it difficult to operate. I'm incredibly proficient with PCs running Windows, but Linux has always been pretty difficult for me.
This book has helped clear up many of the things I didn't understand before. Currently I'm only in Chapter 11 but I've learned more about running Linux in the last four hours reading this book than I ever have before.
Give it a shot!
Don't be like Mr. Stump and wipe out your file system.
Maybe do a little research first. Learn what partitioning is. Maybe use another Linux disc called Parted Magic to resize and partition your drive properly using the right file system.
Maybe not blame a good book and give it one star for your own ignorant actions.
