The Student's Guide to European Integration: For Students, By Students ReviewThe authors have done a first-rate job creating a resource that will be welcomed by students of the EU, both novices and more experienced hands, as well as people whose work regularly involves them in EU matters. All academic libraries should have a copy. I think that many instructors will want to assign it as a supplemental text. (It could stand alone as a core text in some basic courses on the EU.) I'm certain students in my EU courses would have welcomed it. The chapters are well organized, succinct and remarkably clear despite the complexity of their subjects. They have a good feel for issues and controversies. I especially liked the "who wins, who loses" discussions as a way of highlighting the politics of the EU. Perhaps the best feature of all for researchers is the extensive list of web resources; the authors have done a better job with this than any other EU book I know.

The Student's Guide to European Integration: For Students, By Students OverviewThe Student's Guide to European Integration is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the political, economic and legal aspects of the European Union. Fully up to date and jargon-free, the volume provides students with a clear overview of the history and institutional structure of the EU. In addition to chapters on all major policy areas, the book offers a straightforward analysis of political and economic theories of EU integration and the basics of EU law. The book explores many of the issues and events which have shaped the development of the European Union since its conception, such as the creation of the Single Market, EU enlargement and the Convention on the Future of Europe.

The book has been specifically designed with the needs of the student in mind. Key features include:

End-of-chapter summaries which identify the main issues discussed in the text
Guides to further reading and lists of relevant web sites for each subject area.
Boxes, tables and highlights from key treaty documents to complement the text and provide useful points of reference for students
Chronology outlining major events in the development of the European Union from the launch of the US Marshall Plan in 1947 to the present day
Student-to-student tips at the end of each chapter advising students how to best approach the topic in question

Written by recent graduate students at the London School of Economics, The Student's Guide to European Integration is the ideal companion for all students studying the European Union as part of a degree course.
