FL Studio Power: The Comprehensive Guide ReviewThere are several approaches to writing a book like this. You can focus on beginners and write a high level overview. You can focus on "power" use and describe tips and techniques that are non-obvious and aren't covered in the user's manual (like the FL Studio Guru videos on youtube). Or you can be an all-encompassing reference guide, describing every feature in detail. Unfortunately, this book tries to do a little bit of each of these things, but it does a poor job of all of them. With its title, and a back cover claiming to "dive into every corner" of FL Studio, you would think the book would cover everything, but it has a lot of glaring omissions: for instance, in the chapter that goes over the menus and interfaces, there are dozens of menu items not even mentioned. Yes, that stuff is covered in the user's manual, but it should also be covered in detail in any book calling itself "The Comprehensive Guide". There are plenty of other omissions as well: No description of loop recording in Edison, or configuring multi-output virtual instruments, for example. Both of those are pretty essential, but somewhat non-intuitive, operations in FL Studio. The topics it does cover are often superficially treated (the section on the Riff Machine tool is pretty useless, for instance). These examples are just ones I can think of off the top of my head; there are plenty of others. The book fails as a beginner's book as well because it doesn't really give you the big picture on the FL Studio workflow before diving into the menus and windows. There are precious few power user tips and tricks, so it doesn't really provide much insight that isn't covered in the user's manual. Finally, its just poorly organized, relative to how you use the program. There are a couple of things I do like about the book: the chapter on installation and set up is pretty well done; the writing style is easy to understand; and the author sticks to the material and doesn't go off on tangents. I also like the fact that its a hardcopy book -- I can read it away from my computer and then dig in deeper later when I'm at the computer. But its a far cry from being "The Comprehensive Guide".FL Studio Power: The Comprehensive Guide OverviewGet ready to master the power of FL Studio with FL STUDIO POWER: THE COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE! Due to its instant overview and loop-friendly appeal, musicians and producers are flocking to FL Studio (formerly FruityLoops) in droves. But many musicians and producers aren't aware of everything FL Studio has to offer, or how to maximize the program to its full potential. FL STUDIO POWER: THE COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE! begins with a basic look at the program and then quickly moves into the software's more complicated features. It includes tips and tricks on the use of the program and displays clearly how new and advanced users can learn all its features. Everything from general setup, to MIDI implementation, to incorporating plug-ins, to using FL Studio for live performance, is covered in-depth. The book will leave the reader with a strong understanding of how to use FL Studio as a standalone recording program, as a live performance tool, or as a complimentary addition to other software programs.

The Complete Pro Tools Handbook: Pro Tools/HD, Pro Tools/24 MIX, and Pro Tools LE for Home, Project, and Professional Studios ReviewThis book looked to be the definitive Pro Tools tome, but falls FAR short. Some good stuff on MIDI setup and recording, but only half a page on mixing techniques? Uh, ok.
Lots of diagrams of HD, MIX and other big rig setups, but who cares? Folks that own that kind of gear already know how to set up and get maximum performance from their equipment.
Should have spent more time on the 002, 001, and MBox. If you own one of those systems don't waste your time with this book. The Complete Pro Tools Handbook: Pro Tools/HD, Pro Tools/24 MIX, and Pro Tools LE for Home, Project, and Professional Studios OverviewOffering tips and tricks on everything from recording and editing to mixing and mastering, this easy-to-use reference unlocks the secrets of Pro Tools, one of the most powerful computer-based digital audio production systems available. Includes a CD-ROM with sample projects and exercises. "I have been waiting for a book like this for five years - it's now a permanent part of my rack." - Ed Cherney, Engineer/Producer (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, CSN&Y, Hootie & the Blowfish)
