The Avid Handbook: Techniques for the Avid Media Composer and Avid Xpress, Third Edition ReviewThis is a great book for the beginner or intermediate Avid user. It may fill in pertinent details for those that are stumbling around and trying to understand concepts about technical issues with the Avid and video.
While this book is a good companion and reference book it IS poorly organized and could improve the general layout. No summaries, few headings and sometimes cursory information on points which need exta-clarification.It presents a large amount of information without a clean and thoughtful approach to breaking that information up and making it digestible.
The handbook, however, is the only book which presents a large amount of information on subjects which concern an Avid editor.
I recommend buying it. I learned some things I didn't know and the beginning/intermediate user could benefit from the information on interface and technical issuesThe Avid Handbook: Techniques for the Avid Media Composer and Avid Xpress, Third Edition OverviewThe Avid Media Composer, Avid Xpress and Avid Symphony are the most widely used nonlinear editing systems by professionals in the film and video industries. Based on his experience teaching countless seminars around the world on the Avid Media Composer, Avid Symphony and Avid Xpress, Steve Bayes has written the most comprehensive manual for nonlinear digital editing on these Avid editing systems. This handbook is now revised throughout to reflect recent upgrades to these systems and the third edition covers Symphony 2.1, Media Composer 9.1 and Avid Xpress 3.1, as well as earlier versions.Written for the reader who already has a basic knowledge of the editing systems, this book moves beyond an introduction to the professional Avid editing systems and focuses on strategies, techniques, and troubleshooting. The Avid Handbook covers the basics of working with effects, rendering, and graphics and discusses the more abstract issues of workflow and organization of different types of editing projects. The book discusses frequently made mistakes, common technical problems, and how they can be avoided. In addition, there is an in depth explanation of Symphony color correction, 24 p and other new features and efficiencies in the latest software versions from Avid. The Avid Handbook discusses techniques for Windows NT users, including the most complete description of the offline to online workflow using Avid systems. Includes techniques for using Windows NT with Avid systemsRevised throughout to reflect system upgradesA guide to strategies, common problems, and techniques while editing nonlinear digital video or film

RED: The Ultimate Guide to Using the Revolutionary Camera ReviewWhen I ordered this book, I was really hoping for "the ULTIMATE" guide to the Red camera system. You know, something that would explain some of it's quirks or how to get the best out of it under varied lighting conditions or even some discussion into the technical aspects of the camera beyond where in the menus you can find the settings for Zebra Stripes. While Noah Kadner is obviously an expert with the camera and its support systems, he provides very little insight for working professionals. Even the First Person POVs at the end of the chapters are little more than anecdotes about working with the Red camera system.
On the other hand, if this is your first time working with advanced video acquisition systems and specifically the Red, then this book is definitely for you. The book does presume you have the most basic of technical proficiency with digital cinematography; mostly to understand its terms, but even that is dealt with by providing a simple glossary in the back. I feel the strength of this book is to provide a quick "up and running" guide to working with the Red camera and its peripherals. It also competently explains the integration of those support systems to provide a comprehensive review for the choices we face in post-production when you acquire your footage with the Red camera.
Ultimately, if you are a working professional, you'll find more resources and technical information by spending the time it takes to read this book at the Red and Red User websites...as even Mr. Kadner suggests.RED: The Ultimate Guide to Using the Revolutionary Camera OverviewWith the release of the RED ONE™ digital cinema camera, the possibility of recording stunning, cinematic-quality images with an affordable camera became a reality. Now that the industry has embraced the nascent technology and added new tools and workflows, filmmakers—from independents on up—are leading the charge on establishing new rules. Here to guide newcomers and RED veterans alike, popular trainer and filmmaker Noah Kadner picks up where the manual leaves off. You've got the basic operations down and now you'll learn how to use the camera in a production environment and discover the various options in post. Using a clear, objective approach, he offers best-practice advice on utilizing RED's proprietary tools, explains the workflows for Final Cut Studio, Avid, and Premiere Pro, and gives workaround solutions where needed. Well-known filmmakers and industry leaders share their own bleeding-edge production methodologies throughout, offering a rare view into this exciting new world of filmmaking. Here are just a few things you'll learn to do:•Build a RED package that fits your budget•Set up for sound recording and learn which audio tools to use •Achieve the optimal exposure using RED's onboard tools and external gear •Edit your footage with step-by-step instructions for Avid, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere Pro•Work color correction into your HD, film, or Web projects •Prep your project for output and archive your footage•Learn from pros such as Rodney Charters, ASC (DP, 24), Simon Duggan, ACS (DP, Knowing), Albert Hughes (Director, The Book of Eli), and many others using RED•Stay up-to-date and download additional resources at the companion Web site at www.peachpit.com/red"If you want to dive in and starting using the RED, look no further. Wedding Videography Start to Finish ReviewI am thrilled with Joanna Silber's book Wedding Photography Start to Finish. The opening paragraph was so funny I had to get up and reread it to my husband. She carries this lighthearted tone throughout the book, making it pleasant and fun to read while hammering out lengthy shot lists and editing software recommendations.
It really feels as though the author is on the side of the reader, divulging personal anecdotes and giving recommendations from her own experiences, while at the same time providing clear and detailed definitions, technical explanations and background information. It is all in there, from how to shoot a wedding in the rain, to choosing methods of archiving your projects.
I like the layout of the book. It is broken up into clever sections of: The proposal, The Wedding, The Honeymoon and The Marriage. Each packed with how-to information specific to wedding videography as well as general information on how to run a successful business through its various phases. If you are like me, who read it start to finish, the pages just kept flipping. However, finding specific subject matter is also easy, with a thorough table of contents and index.
The tips and notes sections are great. Many of them are fantastic, even if you are not a wedding photographer. They are just great life advise. The author really does an excellent job of addressing both novices and established professionals. Because the work is so comprehensive, there is something for everyone.
My one complaint about the writing of this book was the frequency of the phrase, "That being said..." I found myself reading a paragraph only to wait for the hitch, which consisently would come shortly thereafter. However, I suppose such is life these days, full of angles from which to view it. That being said, I congratulate the author on completing this magnificently thorough and heartfelt piece of work.Wedding Videography Start to Finish OverviewWedding production is unique in that every shot must be obtained in a single take, as in documentary filmmaking, but the client expects the finished product to look like a feature film, with perfect capture of every moment.Getting good-looking footage, while fighting problems such as loud settings, uncontrollable light and rapid scene changes, make wedding videography very challenging compared to other types of filmmaking. "Wedding Videography: Start to Finish" is the first technical guide that explains how to balance the expectations of the bridal couple with the realities of single-take shooting. These discrepancies will be explained through lessons in gear selection, shot set-up, how to work in poorly lit conditions, and how to make the best of bad angles, audio and light. The book further explains how to improve and stylize footage through editing and post production techniques. With "Wedding Videography: Start to Finish," video amateurs and professionals new to wedding coverage alike will find a complete guide on every aspect of becoming a successful wedding videographer, from selecting production gear and software through the shooting and editing process, and even the business aspects of the wedding industry including client expectations, wedding etiquette, legal issues and product delivery.
