VMware vSphere and Virtual Infrastructure Security: Securing the Virtual Environment ReviewIn the first half of this year (2009), I was involved on extending my previous research on virtualization security, and specifically, I focused on securing and hardening VMware ESX environments. This stirred up my interest on this book. To sum up what this book is all about: "I would have loved to have this book handy back by that time, as it would have saved me tons of time" Instead, I had to read and compare multiple VMware security guides from VMware, CIS, NIST, etc, and perform an extensive hands-on research on my own.
The book offers a very solid and broad analysis of multiple security issues on virtual environments, covering not only the technical aspects associated to the virtualization hosts, virtual machines, and virtual data and storage networks, but also management and operational issues, availability concerns, and other common related tasks on newly deployed, or already established, virtualization setups.
The first two chapters focus on security threats and attacks, a basic foundation required for the cross-references available throughout the book,that can be skipped by the on-the-field security readers.
The next three chapters focus on offering best practices and security recommendations for different key components of any virtualization platform, such as the hypervisor, the storage network, and virtual clusters. The next couple of chapters cover most of the security aspects that must be considered on the design, deployment and operation of a virtual environment.
Although all these chapters provide a very good quality security advice, it is not complemented with hands-on examples. I think this could be improved by adding more detailed sections describing step-by-step how to complete the security recommendations exposed, not just what need to be done. However, I understand it is required to cut the size of the book at some point. A good example of how to extend this idea can be observed on chapter 6, where the integration between VMWare ESX and a directory service is covered in depth.
However, both the technical and operational aspects are integrated smoothly, offering a great in-depth overview. Apart from that, the whole recommended list of things to consider in order to get a more secure virtualization infrastructure is summarized in a useful set of boxes called "Security Notes" and spread all throughout the book. These boxes can be easily used as a checklist when deploying or assessing the security of virtual solutions.
My favourite chapters are chapter 8, and specially 9, where virtual machine and virtual networking security is analyzed, respectively. Chapter 9 offers a whole set of networking scenarios and discusses pros and cons to the number of (physical and virtual) network cards and its configuration. A very practical and thorough work!
The book ends up with three special chapters. Chapter 10 covers the new VMware virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and the security issues around it. Due to all the client-based attacks nowadays, most probably it is going to be a de-facto standard pretty soon, so getting involved on the virtualization of client systems is a must. Chapter 11 provides a detailed guide to harden VMware ESX and ESXi hosts, a mandatory initial process for every new virtual deployment. Finally, chapter 12 provides a quick and interesting introduction to digital forensics (and data recovery) on virtual enviroments, mainly focused on how to deal with virtual file systems, such as VMFS, VMDKs, and raw disks. A quick recommended read for forensic analysts interested on expanding their skills to virtual victims.
There are a few things I feel will improve the book contents. Unfortunately, due to the publication deadline, its coverage of the latest VMware vSphere virtual architecture is pretty limited, as the author clarifies. Besides that, considering the frequent security updates and patches released by virtualization vendors, I would have liked to find a better coverage of best practices to update the virtual infrastructure itself. Finally, as mentioned previously, about half of the book includes detailed how-to sections describing how to apply the recommended settings, but the other half misses that how-to portion. I understand this may be a limitation to make the book size manageable (it's over 500 pages now).
This book is highly recommended for IT and security architects, involved in the design of new virtual solutions, as well as virtualization administrators and anyone in charge of the maintenance of a virtual infrastructure. From a security perspective, people evaluating, assessing, and suggesting improvements for virtual solutions should read the book in order to have a full overview of all the security threats and possible countermeasures. Overall, the book is a must read for anyone already involved, or planning to get involved, in virtualization. It really helps to acquire a very broad and extensive knowledge of the security considerations that apply to such a complex and modern IT architectures.

Running Xen takes a unique approach to introducing Xen to both the novice and expert virtualization user. The authors start off introducing just enough of the core concepts to give the reader an adequate basis on which the book later builds on to provide the required skills to effectively run a virtual environment. A brief explanation of Xen architecture follows with an overview of the management tools with real world examples showing actual output. I found this attention to often overlooked detail refreshing such as the use of ssh with keys and X Forwarding to securely communicate with guests impressive, instead of simply using an easier less secure method for example. The reader could choose to skip ahead if the topic was already understood but providing that level of detail is integral to the learning process in my opinion. Simply getting a Xen server up and running accomplishes nothing for the user needing to actually run and administer it after, which is where most technical books fail.
The walk through with guest disk images and creating them correctly was well appreciated instead of leaving that to the reader to hopefully figure out. All popular methods for populating guests were covered which allowed distro specific tools to be utilized instead of requiring non native methods or leaving the reader unprepared. Device virtualization was covered, but I assume as Xen is constantly evolving the information at print time regarding hiding a PCI device from Dom0 was still accurate but is now slightly different. Fortunately, all the pointers to additional reading would lead the user to finding the current procedure. Networking was covered in detail which is an often misunderstood part of Xen and a working example of a purely virtual segment using a dummy interface was shown which I found fairly useful. Guest resource management provided an understanding for topics such as the IO Scheduler and gave examples on how to tune it.
This was my second book on Xen and completely replaces the first as a much more competent reference. VMware vSphere PowerCLI Reference: Automating vSphere Administration ReviewI received the paper-version of the book last week and started reading it straight away. The authors are THE number one PowerCLI experts in the world and take you through the trenches of vSphere automation.
Although I know vSphere inside out I am a novice when it comes to PowerCLI. The main reason being that I never gave myself the time to actually learn PowerCLI as I figured I could do things faster using the UI. Although this might be true in some cases the first thing the book tought me was that my perception was wrong. The book shows you how to optimize your day-to-day operations by taking advantage of what PowerCLI has to offer out of the box, but it also teaches you how to create your own functions. The amount of examples in there in terms of PowerCLI scripts are such a valuable asset that I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning PowerCLI and/or optimizing their operational procedures. We are not talking about reporting only, for instance configuring vSwitches or restricting the amount of snapshots is all shown in this book. Be warned though, don't expect a step-by-step Learning PowerCLI Guide, this is 700+ pages of pure PowerCLI automation at its best which will enable you to get the most out of your environment.

The Book of Xen: A Practical Guide for the System Administrator ReviewI've read this book as well, and I can say I absolutely LOVE it. I'm not sure if I agree with the other reviewer's analysis of the book, it seems like he comes from a non-technical background and prefers to want to know all the reasoning behind certain ways to do a proper Xen setup. I've been using Xen for the last 1.5 years and I can say this book is absolutely essential for anyone using Xen on 2 or more computers. I own a mini cloud with my own miniature cluster of Xen instances (roughly 60 virtual machines), and it's hard to get things right if you're unfamiliar with all the tools that Xen offers. For example, "The Book of Xen" makes it easy and straightforward for doing backups using LVM, with everything down to the exact command needed to run at the prompt.
It also has a great chapter on running Xen on alternative operating systems like Solaris. It took me about 10 hours of searching through tutorials on the net to figure out how to get Solaris to properly install on a Xen instance. I'm using OpenSolaris on Xen for my personal home backups so that they can run on the popular ZFS filesystem using raidz. The tutorials on the internet are mostly wrong and incomplete, but the step by step instructions in the book made it quite easy.
I also loved the chapter on Xen migration, something I've been doing pretty poorly and haphazardly using various scripts of my own. Although I'm pretty confident at the Linux command line, there are a few things I didn't know about how to run a proper Xen migration. I especially liked the section about live migration -- most of my friends running Xen on their colocated servers don't know this subject well and could probably learn a thing or two by reading this chapter.
There's also a cool chapter on running Windows XP on Xen. I've been trying to get multiple XP instances running under my Xen infrastructure so that I could run my Selenium integration test suite under a native IE8 web browser, but so far it has been really hard. I'm really happy the book distills the painful parts of the set up process in just one chapter.
Most of the time Xen "just works", but I'm glad the book has a good chapter on troubleshooting Xen issues. I've run into a bunch of these issues when trying to boot my OpenSolaris instance under Xen and without the book's troubleshooting recommendations, I probably would have been stuck for hours on the problem.
This book is great for anyone who just wants to get things done, it's not a book to learn about the internals of Xen. I'd recommend Mr R. Kolodziej to buy a book about basic Linux system administration before reading "The Book of Xen". Anyone installing xen-tools on Debian will probably know what their doing and will be the perfect reader for this book. If you don't know Linux well enough, I would recommend reading Mr Nemeth's well regarded "Linux Administration Handbook" before reading this one.The Book of Xen: A Practical Guide for the System Administrator Overview
