How to Do Everything NetObjects Fusion 11 ReviewHow to Do Everything: NetObjects Fusion 11 I can't tell you how long I've waited for a good user's guide to Netobjects Fusion, my favorite HTML editor. Each year the software has gotten more powerful; each year the written documentation has grown more sparse. With the introduction of Netobjects Fusion 11, I was at the end of my patience with fighting the glitches between Windows Vista and Netobjects Fusion 10. I had reviewed the users' groups, the software's online documentation, and performed several searches for reviews and comments about the new version. I actually decided to upgrade only because David Plotkin's book was available, which was a wise choice. It's a pleasure to read, easily understandable to a novice user or an experienced website developer. For me, it was written at just the right level as there were some of the newer, more sophisticated functions within Fusion that I wanted to work with but didn't want to plow through the documentation offered, such as data base publishing, using Flash, Java, and ActiveX. Even simple things in Netobjects now have so many options that it is invaluable to have a guide with good graphical images accompanying the text so you get a complete picture without having to work with your software and the book at the same time. Especially valuable are the handy tips and tricks that appear throughout the text as "Notes" that cover little shortcuts, alternate choices, and warnings. There is also a companion website, which is a big asset. If you have waited for a good basic user's guide to Netobjects Fusion, this is a good place to start. It will not only explain the latest Netobjects Fusion 11, but if you have been somewhat lax in keeping up with the new bells and whistles of the software as it's developed, this book will bring you up to date.How to Do Everything NetObjects Fusion 11 Overview

The Microsoft Expression Web Developer's Guide to ASP.NET 3.5: Learn to create ASP.NET applications using Visual Web Developer 2008 ReviewI must have purchased 10 books on how to develope a website from the ground up. Within the first 5 chapters, without fail, something integral to the entire website that they take for granted working, wouldn't work for me, and after a week or two of trying to fix the issue, I would normally give up. I repeated this process for about the past 6 months.
Some background on me, I'm 28, I have a BS in computer science, but generally learned nothing in college, of business value anyway. I am lightly familiar with coding/designing, if given enough time I could read the code and tell you about what most things do in C++ or VB, (And their .net equivalents), but ask me to program something, and I wouldn't even know where to start. This is why I am heavily dependant on any programing examples in a book working...
This book is definitely more a designers guide to building a website, but by that, I mean it shows you how to create a website from the ground up, and every short cut possible where you can have Visual Web Developer (VWD) button, or option do the work of coding. This is like a god send for people like me, that want to learn coding, but not as badly as we want to learn how to create .NET websites. I didn't get stuck for more than a few minutes anywhere.
There are no "stories from the trenches" that many books put in just to fill in space and bore you inbetween what you actually want to know. This book is VERY concisely written telling you what you need to know. This book does not go into great depth in any great part, it briefly touches on just about everything you could need to run your own website though and makes recommendations for either websites or books to purchase to get additional information.
In conclusion, this book is great for beginners, and I would, and have recommended it to everyone I know who, similar to me, wants to create a professional looking website, that doesn't have the programing skills to make it happen. Distinctive Design: A Practical Guide to a Useful, Beautiful Web ReviewThe purpose of this book is to discuss what makes for good web designs. Much of it is closely related to material on design principles for other media, such as the printed page as for most cases, good design is good design. The author takes another step with respect to web design and discusses topics particular to the web, though, such as how a page appears in different browsers, the effect of add-ins and third party applications, and also spends a good amount of time discussing web design for the latest devices such as mobile, smaller screens, etc.
The topics/chapters are well laid out, the book is easy to read, and the author does a great job at covering the various principles and concepts of good design. Is there unique content to the book? Not really; there are lots of other good books on design out there but this compares favorably with them. It is a good all-in-one reference and I felt it is a useful and practical read - for laymen like me it has a bunch of good ideas. I've read most of them before but it is always good to have a refresher, and just reading the text gives me pointers and reminders of things to make sure I incorporate.
There is an emphasis on making pages user-friendly and ensuring you convey the proper message of the page. It's a practical book. As I mentioned before, the author also emphasizes designing for the latest devices - smart phones, etc., which have a more limited screen space and you have to make sure your message is effective and communicates properly. As another reviewer stated, this is not a book with ready-made templates to try out, or stuff that gets you started right away on a ready-to-go web site.
