Microsoft.Net E-Commerce Bible with CDROM (Bible (Wiley)) ReviewThe author has obviously done the e-commerce thing the hard way and shares plenty of advice to keep you from screwing it up. I like the outright way the author points our weaknesses in Microsoft's products and shows you how to work around them. This is not a product manual - it's a guide for using a half dozen products all together in an e-commerce site. I work at a .com that uses Microsoft products and I wish we'd reas this before we started... we're going back and fixing things now.Microsoft.Net E-Commerce Bible with CDROM (Bible (Wiley)) OverviewThis guide covers Microsoft's entire e-commerce initiative, discussing all the technologies introduced in Windows 2000: Site/Commerce Server; SQL Server 2000; IIS; Exchange Server; BizTalk Server; Application Centre; Active Server Pages and Visual Basic. It shows how all of these products need to interact in order to create the most efficient, robust, scalable e-commerce sites around. The author takes the reader through the entire e-commerce process: planning; designing; advertising; attracting customers; customization, customer support, creating B2B and B2C environments, development; and using specific technologies. There's also insight into dealing with common mistakes and pitfalls, aimed to help readers avoid unnecessary cost and overruns. The CD-ROM includes trial versions of Microsoft's key .NET software products, as well as the case studies that are used throughout the book in various stages.

At the Source of Life ReviewIn the first half of this book Raphael engages in a dialogue with his students about philosophic issues, including the nature of reality, love, the mind's role in projecting and creating illusory experience, the role of desire in causing unhappiness, spiritual teachers, art, and the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. The discussion is rich and engaging. The students present Raphael with questions that could easily be our own. Raphael's answers are surgically precise in identifying and peeling away the fundamental confusions and unexamined assumptions that combine to alienate us from ourselves and prevent us from achieving true peace. The reader will appreciate the dialogic approach (also used in his book "Tat Tvam Asi") and Raphael's willingness to explain so as to foster understanding and comprehension. For Raphael, "comprehension" - or deeper understanding - is the true basis of change and is what allows us to transform ourselves. His books are designed to foster such "comprehension" through a combination of dialogue and careful explanation. Part Two of the book uses a different format to approach these subjects, presenting each topic in the form of short sentences or paragraphs - i.e. "sutras" - that can be used for meditation and contemplation. This more intuitive format provides a nice balance to the more analytic, dialogic style of the first half of the book. Throughout Raphael reminds us that realization is not an academic or intellectual undertaking, rather, it is a "realizative" undertaking that should transform the way we live and our fundamental assumptions about the source of life.
About the author. Raphael's books demonstrate a deep inner understanding of the world's sacred traditions. He brings them alive and gives them a contemporary expression while remaining true to their original inspiration. Raphael reminds us that Occidental and Oriental sacred traditions are not to be approached academically or intellectually, but rather, that they are living spiritual pathways to truth that remain relevant today. His books provide the reader with the understanding and tools to follow these sacred paths, including Alchemy, Kabbalah, Orphism, or Platonism in the Western Tradition, or Yoga and the Advaita Vedanta of Sankara in the Eastern Tradition. Raphael is recommended to all spiritual seekers who want to ground their search in ancient wisdom while seeking a contemporary expression that appeals to reasoned analysis and which integrates modern philosophy, science and psychology. Raphael's books challenge us to see these traditions, ourselves and the world differently, and to take our spiritual seeking seriously. If you are willing to do so, his books are for you.
At the Source of Life OverviewAgainst modern man's anxious uncertainty, against his inner void filled only with confusion, with solitude, with fear, Raphael offers the solid and safe rock of a valid reason for living and shows us that by stopping at one's gross state means losing contact with the Universal Reality, becoming a «living corpse, creating «a society already dead».The concept now expands into the social and political fields. The solution to all these problems is briefly, though clearly, indicated as consisting in a policy, the only one possible, which is based on an ethical conduct that transcends individuality and is linked to the universal laws. But in order to arrive at this man must seek in himself and unveil the essence of his being.

Microsoft® ASP.NET Programming with Microsoft Visual C#® .NET Version 2003 Step By Step (Pro-Step by Step Developer) ReviewThis book was rather hard to follow, and I think it was mostly because the author (G. Andrew Duthie) did not write clearly. For instance, in the debug chapter, he wanted you to view a document called 'trace.axd'. The author wrote, "Appending trace.axd to the base URL for the application will display the list..." I had to read that sentence about ten times and still did not know what it was asking me to do. The picture that followed helped me to figure it out. This is just one example, and since it was at the end of the book, the one most fresh in my mind.
If you are unfamiliar with ASP, I don't think the author had you in mind while writing this book. You can't read more than a couple of pages without it saying, "In classic ASP..." or "...unlike classic ASP, ASP.NET..." or something to those effects. This might confuse somebody who is new to ASP (and ASP.NET) as it provides more information that we really want to know about. At the beginning of the book he explains that ASP.NET is totally different from ASP. I think the author should have left it there and left ASP in the past (where I think it belongs). He did include an appendix on upgrading yor applciations from ASP to ASP.NET, which is good. But continuing to bring up "classic" ASP in the book I think is bad.
This book is divided into four parts. The first part is aimed at the beginner to help somebody new to ASP.NET start programming with the basic programming of VB.NET explained and what makes ASP.NET different from ASP. It also gives you a brief (too brief) introduction to the server components you can add to an ASP.NET web page.
For the final three parts the author really started losing me. It was like he was writing at level 3 and then shot up to level 8 between part 1 and part 2. He would casually write about topics and use terminology not defined earlier in the book. The only chapters I really got information out of was chapter 9 (Accessing and Binding Data, a brief inroduction to ADO.NET) and chapter 14 (Tracing and Debugging ASP.NET applications). Chapter 14 should have come MUCH earlier in the book. However, half of the examples provided did not teach me much, and often times did not work very well.
All in all, I would not recommend this book, and regret buyin it (and paying retail on top of that). There is much better out there.Microsoft® ASP.NET Programming with Microsoft Visual C#® .NET Version 2003 Step By Step (Pro-Step by Step Developer) Overview

American Cinematographer Manual, Ninth Edition 2 Vol Set ReviewAlso known as "The Cinematographers Bible", this thick hand-sized pocket book is an absolute must for anybody who owns or uses a 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm or 70mm motion picture camera (movie cameras). IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU CINEMATOGRAPHY! It is a technical manual to be used when shooting on film and has since become the industry standard book that most amateur and professional cinematographers own and use. Motion pictures cameras are also built around the specifications laid down in this book.
Essentially the first 100 pages deal with all the different types of motion picture cameras, their internal mechanisms, technical details and threading paths. Then the book goes on to dealing with motion picture film itself, the various brands that are available, differences between black and white, color and a bit about the development process of each one. Again, technically detailed. There is also very valuable charts on film lengths and running times according to fps. The lens section is very technical covering the different types of lenses and the most important focal length, distance to subject, measuring charts that is really the most widely used part of this book. There is a massive section on filters, exposure and emulsion testing.
The book then deals with lighting and covers the various aspects of lighting types, bulbs, filters and exposure techniques, all highly technical in nature with references to charts and illustrations. The book ends with a coverage of visual special effects that can be done with the motion picture camera and other special techniques that the cinematographer will need to know about.
You will need this book if you are shooting on film, end of story. If you are looking for a manual that teaches cinematography then choose CINEMATOGRAPHY by Kris Malkiewicz instead. As a note, there is a lot of new digital cinematography cameras on the up and coming that work on digital video tape and not film and many new filmmakers may be advised to check out this route as a cheaper and less costly way of shooting their first film.American Cinematographer Manual, Ninth Edition 2 Vol Set OverviewFor the first time since Charles Clarke's 1980 edition, the AC Manual has been edited by a professional cinematographer. The completely revised 9th edition offers contributions from experts with more than 100 years of motion-picture experience. Its features include:• More than 30 new charts, including lighting intensities for more than 90 fixtures.• A completely revised camera section, rewritten by Jon Fauer, ASC• A new article on digital intermediates by Bill Feightner and Robert L. Eicholz of EFilm• Warner Bros. executive Rob Hummel's update of his classic "pros and cons" chapter, which now includes the latest digital postproduction techniques• A new chapter on hanging miniatures by visual-effects wizard Dan Curry• "Tak's tips" from Panavision lens expert Tak Miyagishima• The most extensive section yet on motion-picture formulas, written by Evans Wetmore, vice president of advanced engineering at 20th Century Fox• A revised chapter on motion-control by visual-effects legend Richard Edlund, ASC, who has included the latest updates on digital technology

Presenting Keynote: The Insider's Guide to Creating Great Presentations ReviewAuthor, Erik Holsinger, has extensive media experience and has written over a 100 articles for CNET, MacWeek, PC World, AV Video and Digital Magic. Mr. Holsinger has also written 3 books, The MacWeek Guide to Desktop Video, How Music and Computers Work and How Multimedia Works.
Keynote was developed at Apple Computer for one client, Steve Jobs. Jobs wanted a powerful presentation program that could display still images, play audio and play video for his major presentations at MacWorld keynote speeches. That where the name comes from. The author said that Jobs beta tested Keynote for over a year.
Mr. Holsinger organizes the book into three main sections and is a mix of reading, demonstrations and hands on practice. The three sections are Getting Started, Keynote Presentations For the Real World and Keynote Meets the World. He takes you from a basic an introduction of keynote, to a multi project tutorials ending with information and tips on PowerPoint, presentation equipment and various output methods.
The book ends with several appendixes that cover Keyboard and mouse shortcuts, a catalog of Keynote graphic library and many online resources. While the Keynote software is not included he does provide a CD-Rom containing tutorial files, demo movies and other programs. The only disadvantage I encountered was with the CD-Rom, which ties into your Internet program to access the web, and can be very slow if you have a modem connection. It is very useful if you have DSL or cable modem. In future releases The author should include a demo version of Keynote on the CD or set it up so people with slow connections (modems) will not give up on the CD.
The book is laid out well. The beginner is walked through every element and steps of Keynote while the more experienced can skip around to the areas of interest.Presenting Keynote: The Insider's Guide to Creating Great Presentations Overview"Holsinger's book is very complete and covers more than most of us will probably ever need."--IT-EnquirerWith Apple's Keynote presentation software, anyone can create visually appealing, professional-caliber presentations. XML for Bioinformatics ReviewThis is a nice brief introductory overview of xml in general and its implementations in biological research. The thing I liked about it was it was not too intensive on any topic, and it provided a lot of useful resources both online and literature-wise for me to look up for more information.
It definitely sparked my interest in certain areas of xml and how I may apply it towards my research. One of the things that I really liked was that the author always spelled out all the mentioned acronyms (thank you, finally someone exists out there that does this!). In addition, I also appreciated that the author did not get too bogged down in anyone topic resulting in a bible-like introductory work - thank you again for that. As a result of this I was literally able to read it in few days and determine the usefulness of this technology called `xml`; and without having to read 1k pages to determine this. In this case 'Less is sometimes definitely more'.
My favorite chapter was the one covering Web Services and now understand the basic concepts behind XML-RPC, REST, and SOAP.
The only reason I give it 4 stars is a.)its pricey for a grad student and b.)I use Perl, and he has a two or so chapters using Java to parse xml. So those chapters were not useful to me. But hey you can't please everyone :)
Overall, it helped me recognize just what xml is, how it may be used, who uses it (esp. in biology) - and how they use it, and a list of references for more info. Definitely a good little book to check out for basic conceptual understanding. I want to say its almost a survey, but its actually a little more than that.XML for Bioinformatics OverviewXML for Bioinformatics aims to provide biologists, software engineers, and bioinformatics professionals with a comprehensive introduction to XML and current XML applications in bioinformatics. The book will assume no background in XML, and take readers from basic to intermediate XML concepts. Core topics will include: fundamentals of XML, creating XML grammars, web services via SOAP, and parsing XML documents in Perl and Java.
