Learning C# 3.0 ReviewI'm a recent Master's graduate, in Computer Science. Programming concepts certainly aren't new to me. I've done C++, VB, Java, JSP, SQL, etc, etc, and figured it was time to pick up C#. I didn't even get this book from Amazon, I picked it up at my local B&N, but I was so pleased with it I had to make a post here.
The Good For Beginners:
He starts off with easy concepts, each chapter is broken up just right. Just when you may start to fidget and wonder how you're going to remember all of it, the chapter will end with a summary, a set of questions, and exercises. And the exercises are done well. If you grasped the concepts you can do them, and they are not too complicated that you may fumble. Plus, the solution is in the back of the book.
The Good For The Experienced:
I may have personally been better off with C# Programming, which is the more advanced book, but I started off with this since it had been a while since I touched a C-styled language. I read through even the introductory chapters, rather than skipping through, and was surprised at what I picked up. I know all of the concepts discussed, but he also includes best practices, as well as very good explanations that make you understand even these simple concepts better.
In my classes, the focus was all on 'This is how you make the code do this', with only one class focused on 'This is how you *should* write your code for readability, updating, some standards, etc'. This really answered a lot of my questions in that department. I feel like a slightly more professional programmer just from paying attention to these bits.
Basically, I liked the format and writing style enough that O'Reilly books, those by Jesse Liberty in particular, are where I look first to learn something new.Learning C# 3.0 Overview
If you're new to C#, this popular book is the ideal way to get started. Completely revised for the latest version of the language, Learning C# 3.0 starts with the fundamentals and takes you through intermediate and advanced C# features -- including generics, interfaces, delegates, lambda expressions, and LINQ. You'll also learn how to build Windows applications and handle data with C#. No previous programming experience is required -- in fact, if you've never written a line of code in your life, bestselling authors Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald will show you how it's done. Each chapter offers a self-contained lesson to help you master key concepts, with plenty of annotated examples, illustrations, and a concise summary. With this book, you will:

Learn how to program as you learn C#
Grasp the principles of object-oriented programming through C#
Discover how to use the latest features in C# 3.0 and the .NET 3.5 Framework--including LINQ and the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
Create Windows applications and data-driven applications

You'll also find a unique Test Your Knowledge section in each chapter, with practical exercises and review quizzes, so you can practice new skills and test your understanding. If you're ready to dive into C# and .NET programming, this book is a great way to quickly get up to speed.

The Animal Connection: A New Perspective on What Makes Us Human ReviewThe publisher's blurb for this book sounds as if it's about our warm, happy relationship with animals, and how this relationship has shaped our evolutionary history. However, the principle relationship discussed is predator-prey. Our tools let us kill and butcher animals more easily. Fire lets us consume them more efficiently. Language lets us hunt them better. The author spends a lot of time on stone tools and their fabrication. She discusses domestication of dogs and horses and the various speculative theories of how this happened. Only at the end does she discuss the sort of relationships we currently value with companion animals. And she laments that most people have no real experiences with nature outside the cities. They think meat is made in a factory and wrapped in plastic from the moment of its manufacture.
It's a good summary of thinking about some aspects of human evolution and prehistory, but not what you would think from the cover and the blurb.
The Animal Connection: A New Perspective on What Makes Us Human Overview
A bold, illuminating new take on the love of animals that drove human evolution.
Why do humans all over the world take in and nurture other animals? This behavior might seem maladaptive-after all, every mouthful given to another species is one that you cannot eat-but in this heartening new study, acclaimed anthropologist Pat Shipman reveals that our propensity to domesticate and care for other animals is in fact among our species' greatest strengths. For the last 2.6 million years, Shipman explains, humans who coexisted with animals enjoyed definite adaptive and cultural advantages. To illustrate this point, Shipman gives us a tour of the milestones in human civilization-from agriculture to art and even language-and describes how we reached each stage through our unique relationship with other animals. The Animal Connection reaffirms our love of animals as something both innate and distinctly human, revealing that the process of domestication not only changed animals but had a resounding impact on us as well. 25 black-and-white illustrations

Learn Xcode Tools for Mac OS X and iPhone Development (Learn Series) ReviewThere are a few items of information to be gleaned here, but not much. Sadly, the author spends way to much space on building useless code examples. Anyone that codes on Mac / iPhone has internet access; all code should have been just supplied and not made part of the actual text to create it all. Only in the rare cases to illustrate a tool point should code have been required to be modified.
That being said, the author spends far to little time on working into deep details on the real XCode toolset. Especially the Instruments; they are given such brief coverage given their importance and lack of other available information on them.
Other XCode tools and operations also receive to-brief attention.
Just way to much time spent on code entry.
Again, and again, and again.Learn Xcode Tools for Mac OS X and iPhone Development (Learn Series) OverviewLearn Xcode Tools for Mac OS X and iPhone Development is the only book that covers all of the tools in Apple's developer toolkit for both Mac OS X and iPhone application development. So many developers are coming to Mac and iPhone and this is the book they'll need to be productive and efficient in this rich environment.
