Implementing the Capability Maturity Model ReviewThe author of this excellent book give a realistic roadmap to achieving CMM levels 2 and 3, which are major hurdles in capability maturity, especially level 2 from a culture-shock point of view.
What makes this book realistic is the way you're lead through the important steps, with a complete focus on what it takes instead of theory. The book starts off with an obligatory overview of the CMM, but quickly segues into the steps needed to attain level 2 (repeatable), which are creating the structures, processes, training program and policies. While each of these are important, I especially like the inclusion of policies because they are necessary to codify goals and are frequently overlooked. This section also includes subcontractor management, which is important for aligning those with whom you are using on projects with your own organizational capabilities. This makes sense because if your organization is repeatable and your subcontractor(s) aren't, then you either need to go shopping for more compatible subcontractors, or get dragged back into ad hoc approaches.
The same approach to graduating to level 3 is used, with slight changes. In the section that covers level 3 the first topic is about focusing on organizational process improvement, followed by an in-depth chapter on defining organization processes. These reflect the key changes between level 2's repeatable goals and level 3's focus on defined processes. After these are clearly and completely explained the same formula - structures, processes, training program and policies - is addressed for level 3.
Following the steps to get to levels 2 and 3, the next section is centered on implementation and assessment. This section prepares you for the assessment process itself, and offers excellent advice on how to get through it. Additional information of value is provided in appendices B (Annotated Level 2 Preassessment Questionnaire) and C (Samples of Level 2 Policies), both of which are provided in PDF format from the book's associated web site.
One key question that needs to be answered: Which is better, this book or CMM Implementation Guide: Choreographing Software Process Improvement by Kim Caputo? My opinion is that both books are equally important and both should be read because they cover two different aspects of attaining CMM levels 2 and above. This book concerns itself with the nuts and bolts of processes, where Caputo's book is more focused on organizational change. Strategic DNA: Bringing Business Strategy to Life Review
After meeting at Camp David with President Jimmy Carter for several days, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minster Menachem Begin of Israel reached a series of accords. Of course, the news media eagerly awaited a briefing. Finally, the three world leaders emerged and one journalist asked, "After thousands of years of wars between your two countries, how were you able to achieve a peace agreement? Prime Minister replied, "We did what all wise men do. We began at the end." That is precisely what Lawrence Hobbs has in mind when explaining the importance of having a "clarity of purpose" clearly in mind first, before formulating and then executing a strategy. In fact, the clarified purpose (i.e. the ultimate goal) can serve as a vision that guides and informs all efforts to achieve it. That's an important point.
With brilliant use of the "journey" metaphor, Hobbs carefully organizes his material in response to these questions:
Chapter 1: Where do we want to go?
Chapter 2: How do we plan to get there?
Chapter 3: How will we know that we're there?
Chapter 4: What will that look like for each business?
Chapter 5: What will we do to get there? What will we stop doing?
Chapter 6: How will we organize ourselves?
Chapter 7: Who will do it? How much can they spend?
Chapter 8: What exactly must be done?
Chapter 9: How do we get everyone on board?
Chapter 10: Where should be? Where are we? What are we doing about the difference?
Chapter 11: Are we there yet?
Chapter 12: What went wrong? What went right? What should we change?
Note: A summary of these and other key questions (per each chapter) is provided in Figure 0.2 on Page xvii.
Credit Hobbs with identifying the "what" first so that he can then focus most of his (and the reader's) attention on the "how." Whenever appropriate, he also explains the "why." I also appreciate his skillful use of a standard format of five sections by which to organize key points in each chapter: Context, Why Do It?, What to Do, How to Do It, and Summary. These and other reader-friendly devices facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of the key points later.
With regard to the book's title, Strategic DNA, it suggests that "a company's ambition - its vision and strategy - is first clearly described in a `genome' that includes critical objectives, their relationships, and the achievement targets that give them form. The genome is then proactively used to frame all significant discussions, virulently permeating its way into the details that achieve the vision." In other words, just as no two human beings have the same deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms, no two organizations have the same resources (including people), strengths, weaknesses, and objectives. It would be a fool's errand for anyone to attempt to apply all of Hobbs's recommendations when formulating and then executing a strategy for her or his own organization. That said, the wealth of information and counsel that Hobbs so generously provides in this volume can help to guide and inform those immensely difficult initiatives. Moreover, and of at least as much importance, his knowledge and wisdom can then be of incalculable value during the subsequent process of continuous improvement to ensure that the given objectives are achieved.

Design and Launch an Online Travel Business in a Week (Entrepreneur Magazine's Click Starts) ReviewI purchased this book hoping that it could provide some insight into the laws surrounding a travel-based business or provide some really helpful insights into building the business, but really this book is less about the travel aspect, and more about the nuts and bolts of building any business and really has little focus on the travel industry in particular.
Even as a setting up your business book, it provides brief overview of what you need to do, but doesn't really dive deep into any particular topic. One topic that I found especially bizarre within the book was about creating your travel website as an e-commerce website and how you could start that business via E-bay -- there's a good part of a chapter dedicated to that, but when I look at the variety of travel websites out there and talk to people in the industry, very few associate travel with an e-commerce website.
Furthermore, the choice of highlighted providers are odd and I've barely heard of some of them and surprised that some of the big players are not even mentioned.

Breakthrough International Negotiation: How Great Negotiators Transformed the World's Toughest Post-Cold War Conflicts ReviewMichael Watkins and Susan Rosegrant--a Harvard Business School professor and a Kennedy School case writer respectively--have written a
book that succeeds on several levels but that is ultimately less powerful than it might have been, probably as a result of trying to serve too
many masters. The authors provide really fascinating accounts of four post-Cold War negotiations--nuclear arms proliferation talks between
the U.S. and North Korea; the Israeli-Palestinian talks leading to the Oslo Accords; the creation of the Gulf War coalition (1991); and the
confrontation between the US (and Europe) and Serbia that led to the Dayton Peace Accords--that each resulted, in their view, in some kind
of major breakthrough, some difficult to achieve result. These accounts are based on what must have been extensive interviews with key
players, who are quoted frequently and who share the concerns and concepts that influenced them. The book would be worthwhile even if
all it contained were these detailed, often thrilling, narratives of several significant recent foreign policy conflicts.
But, in addition, these four negotiations provide the authors with the jump off points for extensive discussions of the personalities involved
and the tactics they used. The book is published by the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and in many ways it represents an
attempt to bring the Socratic method out of the class room and on to the written page. In parenthetical asides they ask the reader to consider
why certain players took certain actions or how a key decision may have influenced the whole course of events, etc.. As you read, the
authors are virtually present, pushing and prodding (in a helpful way) to make sure that you are conscious of the negotiating ploys that
participants utilize.
Meanwhile, in their own analysis of events, they spell out the four core concepts of what they call "breakthrough negotiation" :
(1) Diagnosing structure
(2) Identifying barriers to agreement
(3) Managing conflict
(4) Building momentum
and seven principles that guide breakthrough negotiators :
(1) Breakthrough Negotiators Shape the Structure of Their Situations
(2) Breakthrough Negotiators Organize to Learn
(3) Breakthrough Negotiators are Masters of Process Design
(4) Breakthrough Negotiators Foster Agreement When Possible But Employ Force When Necessary
(5) Breakthrough Negotiators Anticipate and Manage Conflict
(6) Breakthrough Negotiators Build Momentum Toward Agreement
(7) Breakthrough Negotiators Lead from the Middle
They use innumerable examples to illustrate these concepts and principles and the overall structure certainly provides a framework that
would be useful to anyone involved in negotiations. In this regard, they have produced what will likely be an excellent textbook for use in
the classroom.
So far so good; but the book also seems to be at least partially intended for a wider audience, and here it runs into some difficulties, largely
as a result of the textbook format and of the choice of geopolitical negotiations as a subject matter. As a threshold matter, I don't believe
that these negotiations between nation states hold terribly many lessons for business executives, who are presumably a significant portion of
the intended wider audience, because one or both of the participants in these cases usually lack the option of just ending the negotiation, an
option which is almost always available in the business setting. Coca-Cola can simply decide not to buy Joe's Cola and can walk away, but
Serbia can't really ignore the United States and Western Europe. No businessman, not even a Bill Gates, is ever likely to have the
overwhelming leverage that the U.S. brings to the negotiating table.
The biggest problem though is that if you apply the first of the authors' own core concepts (diagnosing structure) to their chosen four
examples you see that the breakthrough generally occurred prior to, or at, the moment negotiations started. Thus, the actual content of the
Oslo Accords was pretty much insignificant; what really mattered was the implicit admission by the parties that Israel and a Palestinian state
were each realities that the other side needed to cope with. Even today, with the relationship between Israel and the Palestinians at its all
time nadir, they are relatively close to a final accord. Israel will eventually declare a Palestinian state unilaterally and the Palestinians will
be forced to accept the boundaries that Israel imposes. The breakthrough occurred with Oslo when the two sides, just by entering
negotiations, acknowledged each others existence as a political fact.

Mind you, the authors are so thorough, insightful, and honest that they do discuss many of these issues, even if only tangentially, and they
are forthright in depicting "breakthrough negotiators" as those folks (Richard Holbrooke and James Baker, for example) who keep their eye
