Mastering Digital Panoramic Photography ReviewI found it interesting to read some of the other reviews prior to writing my own evaluation of this book. The information and approach taken by Woeste seems to be a definitely hit or miss with the audience that has chimed in. Here's why I think this is the case.
If you are looking for a simple step-by-step approach to getting a great stitched panoramic photo, this may not be the book for you. Though there is plenty of how-to type instruction with well documented screen shots, it is not presented in the recipe to success approach taken by some books.
Conversely, if you are the type that likes to get the entire picture (pun kinda intended in this case), including all the background, history, technique and philosophy to the panoramic technique, then this is the book for you. Woeste provides superb examples, front annotated behind-the-scenes setup views to beautiful examples of his own work, to compliment a thorough walk through panoramic photography. The history of the craft is included, giving some interesting background.
The detailed view of tripod heads & gear definitely puts this book beyond the avid amateur who is looking for just the basic simple software solution for stitching some photos together. Perhaps that is this books biggest difficulty, finding the right audience. Even so, for the photographer that enjoys knowing the deep details and options available in this area, I'd say this book is a good offering.Mastering Digital Panoramic Photography Overview
The unusual perspective of a panoramic image creates a unique and intriguing visual experience for the viewer. Skillfully executed, panoramic photography can realize scenes which could otherwise never be captured in an image or seen with the naked eye. Panoramas offer new possibilities for creative photographers, either as flat, two-dimensional images, or mapped into a 3D space that can be visited on a virtual tour. New, powerful, panorama software makes the workflow easier and more efficient than ever before. Author Harald Woeste takes the reader on a tour from the basics of capturing panoramas, all the way through stitching, editing, and printing panoramic images. He provides a detailed description of the necessary equipment and materials, as well as the various software tools that can be used in the workflow. The latter half of the book illustrates the making of panoramas through a number of example projects. In Mastering Digital Panoramic Photography you will find everything you need to know to create amazing panoramic images.

Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations ReviewBoeing Aircraft is currently working on its next big airplane, the Sonic Cruiser. But even before a prototype of the Sonic Cruiser takes to the skies, tens of thousands of hours will have been spent on design, planning, testing, legal, administrative, and other tasks.
The product development scenario for information technology and information security is radically different. Corporate networks are being rolled out with planning and design that is not on par with that of our counterparts in the aviation and construction industries. In fact, already complex corporate networks are continuously becoming more byzantine. Take an average MIS department and add up all their hardware vendors, network topologies and protocols, operating systems, software add-ons, and custom-written applications. Now try to securely integrate them. If security was not designed into the original system architecture, how can these security products be expected to work? Despite the fact that companies are spending more and more money on information systems security, the systems are growing more and more complex -- and complex systems are much harder to protect.
Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations, is intended to help readers design and deploy better security technologies. The authors believe that security architecture must be comprehensive, because a network that is 98% secure is actually 100% insecure. This is especially true, given that -- contrary to popular belief -- information security is not a pure science, but a mixture of art and science.
Effective information security must encompass every aspect of the enterprise. Security Architecture shows how to design a secure infrastructure. It addresses all of the major security products and provides details on how to deploy them.
The authors incisively write that it is not enough for security professionals to understand the theory behind information security; unless they are able to insert security controls in the proper places within an application (data flows, storage and processing), the security solution will not be effective. A security product that is implemented incorrectly is like medicine that is taken improperly: great in potential, but futile in reality.
In addition, if the inserted security solution is not managed with the proper processes in place (e.g., change management, separation of duties, notification, and escalation), the level of security provided will degrade with time until the control becomes ineffective.
The book covers all of the fundamentals of information security. Particularly noteworthy is Chapter 3, "Information Classification and Access Control Plan." As companies place more of their corporate data jewels on often-untrusted public networks, the lack of an information classification scheme can have significant negative security consequences. Also, access control is critical in that many organizations -- and even the media -- are busy obsessing about remote hackers from foreign countries and have become oblivious to the real threats to information security: insiders. While it is much more romantic to think about foreigners hacking into your system in the middle of the night, the reality is that most breaches occur via insiders during normal business hours.
The authors of Security Architecture discuss the elements needed to design and deploy effective information security architecture. Critical security products such as PKI, firewalls, VPN, IDS, and others are discussed, but cryptographic accelerators are not mentioned.
This book highlights best practices and security standards and guidelines for effectively securing an enterprise. The book is well organized and easy to read. Many chapters have additional references and URL's for further research.
The inclusion of numerous case studies, combined with the authors' real-world experience, makes Security Architecture a valuable reference. No one would ever want to get on a plane that had not been properly designed and tested. Neither should we want to use networks that have not been adequately designed and tested from a security standpoint. Security Architecture is intended to make sure that doesn't happen.Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations OverviewWill more than 1.3 trillion dollars expected to be spent via e-business on the Internet by 2003, security has never been more important. This title offers a practical, step-by-step approach, and shows how to design and deploy security sucessfully across the enterprise.

The Definitive Guide to MySQL 5 ReviewI read and reviewed MySQL Press' MySQL Tutorial by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson two years ago. I thought Tutorial was a great, concise (267 pages including index) MySQL overview. I hoped The Definitive Guide to MySQL 5, 3rd Ed (DG, 748 pages) would extend my understanding of MySQL beyond the coverage in the Tutorial. Unfortunately, I found the Tutorial did a better job addressing important information than the DG. While there is some good information in the DG, I recommend staying with books published by MySQL Press.
The biggest problem with the DG stems from this statement on p xxvii: "No previous knowledge of SQL or database design is assumed." The first seven chapters, however, frequently direct confused newbies to chapters 8-10, where database design and SQL syntax is introduced. An author who recognizes that he is losing readers should take a hard look at the organization of his book.
DG is also far from a "definitive guide." I wanted to learn more about JOIN statements, but only 3 confusing pages (pp 197-9) cover JOINS -- compared to 7 in the much shorter Tutorial. Worse, here is how the author "introduces" the LEFT JOIN and ON statements: "One variant consists in creating a table list with LEFT JOIN and then forming the linking connection with ON." How is anyone (especially newbies) supposed to consider that informative?
I was also interested in learning about MERGE tables, since I use them in an open source project. DG has nothing to say on the subject, although the Tutorial gives at least 2 pages. The DG also makes the unfortunate decision to omit the semicolon from the end of all MySQL commands. Sure, they may not be in the SQL standard, but every single other MySQL book I've seen uses them. That is especially important for new MySQL users.
The DG also spent far too much time on areas I felt were best addressed elsewhere. I really don't care to learn how to install Apache, PHP, and Perl on various platforms. I also didn't need to read so much about integration with PHP. Other books with MySQL and PHP in the title are the right place to discuss that subject. I admit I skipped reading Part IV, on programming interfaces, along with ch 12 (GIS) and the SQL and API references (ch 21, 23).
On the positive side, I had not read anything on stored procedures or triggers before (ch 13). I also picked up some tricks on security and logging from chs 11 and 14. I learned of some new administration tools in ch 5. I still wish the author had spent more time addressing SQL syntax and explaining what it meant, and less on peripheral issues. Performance and tuning are two subjects outside of core SQL syntax that should be in the book but are not discussed thoroughly. I should note that I thought the translator for DG did a great job. I didn't notice any real rough spots that may have been the result of poor translation.
If the fourth edition of the DG receives a major overhaul, you might consider buying it. I am astounded by the number of positive reviews for this and previous editions, since I believe the DG does not address enough of the subjects that really matter to MySQL administrators.
Apress does publish many outstanding books, such as Running IPv6 or several titles on Python. I recommend checking out those works. The Definitive Guide to MySQL 5 OverviewThe Definitive Guide to MySQL 5, Third Edition is the latest revision to Michael Kofler's popular comprehensive book on the world's most popular open source database server. Updated to reflect the changes in MySQL version 5, the most significant update in the product's history, readers are exposed to MySQL's impressive array of new features including views, stored procedures, triggers, spatial data types, and more. Novice and intermediate users alike will benefit from extensive coverage of core MySQL features such as user administration, basic and advanced querying, and security. Readers are also introduced to several standard and third-party tools such as the MySQL Administrator, Query Browser, and popular PHPMyAdmin tool. Acknowledging MySQL's huge popularity when used in conjunction with APIs, Michael devotes substantial coverage talking to MySQL via languages like PHP, Perl, Java, C, and C#.

The Metrology Handbook ReviewI was repeatedly surprised at how poorly this book is written and edited. I'm not even sure where to start. The writing is terrible. Bucher's name is the credited author of the majority of the chapters. Bad idea Jay ... let the writers write. Large sections of his chapters are wholly quoted from other authors and industry standards. It's cumbersome and annoying. An author is supposed to strain the key points from standards and explain them in meaningful ways. I could have just bought the standards and read them myself.
His use of questions to introduce a topic is intensely distracting. He literally blows out 8 to 10 questions in a row without saying a thing. Whole paragraphs were only questions with no answers .... When sprinkled in, that technique is effective, but I assure you, its overuse will drive you up the wall in this book.
Maybe the really problem here is my concept of what THE Metrology Handbook should look like. Metrology is arguably the cornerstone discipline of quality and reliability engineering. And in recent decades, no one has stepped forward to edit and publish a handbook on the topic - and it certainly deserves one. So I will credit Bucher for his willingness. But to approach the topic with eighth-grade writing is shameful.
The Metrology Handbook should be an institution for the generations like Mark's Handbook for Mechanical Engineers or the Machinery Handbook. Teary-eyed grandfathers should hug their granddaughters on graduation day, and hand them their first Metrology Handbook. (I'm a little choked up just thinking about that.) The Metrology Handbook should be an honorable tome. This book is far from that.
And where was the publisher? The American Society for Quality checked out on this one. With `Quality' in your name publishing a topic like metrology ... this book should be nothing less than excellent. Only the best managing editors and contributing authors should have been selected. And it should have been peer-reviewed. ASQ has published excellent books for many years. They could publish a better book than this with one-hand tied behind their back. What happened???
P.S. I'd bet my left pinky toe that the first reviewer was paid to write those glowing comments. Way to hit the keywords big guy!The Metrology Handbook OverviewMany of the topics listed in the Certified Calibration Technician (CCT) Body of Knowledge are presented in this comprehensive book which serves as an excellent reference to prepare for the certification exam. This book provides an overview of metrology and calibration principles and practices geared towards intermediate and advanced users with a basic understanding of the subject matter. Examples and figures are used throughout the book to aid in practically applying the material along with a helpful list of acronyms and abbreviations, a glossary of terms, and a bibliography for easy reference.

Programming Python ReviewWow. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it's enormous. It took me almost a year to go through the whole thing, although I did stop and work through every single example. On the other hand, like "Learning Python", there are a lot of sidetracks that seem targeted at beginners which I felt could have easily been left out.
This book should be considered volume 2 of "Learning Python". "Learning Python" (or "volume 1") covers the core Python language in quite a bit of detail, but doesn't talk much about the library. "Programming Python", in turn, covers the Python library, but doesn't talk about the syntax of the language (you're expected to know all that already).
Even with 1500 pages, it would be impossible to do justice to the _entire_ Python library, so a useful subset is covered. The book is actually divided into seven subsections, and sections 2 (System Programming), 3 (GUI Programming), 4 (Internet Programming), and 5 (Tools and techniques) could each have legitimately been a book in their own right. Part 6 (Integration) was a bit weak compared to the others - it covered only two chapters, and was the only section of the book that included incomplete examples. Of course, Parts 1 & 7 were an introduction and an epilogue.
In terms of the Python standard library, "String Services", "File and Directory Access", "Data Persistence", "Generic Operating System Services", "Interprocess Communcation and Networking", "Internet Protocols and Support", and "Graphical User Interfaces" were covered indepth. "Internet Data Handling" and "Structured Markup Tools" were both touched on, but not really examined. Other Python-related topics such as Jython, Zope, ZODB and SWIG were discussed as well, along with examples.
The main strength of this book was its examples. I prefer to manually type each source example and run them, rather than downloading them from a web site - although it takes longer to work through the book that way, I end up retaining quite a bit more. For that reason, I'm frustrated by programming books that include incomplete examples (or at least not enough that I can reasonably fill in the blanks). Fortunately, this wasn't such a book - until the very last chapter, all of the examples were complete, although quite a few of them build on previous examples (sometimes a bit pointlessly, such as his GUIMixin "framework"). Chapter 15, for example, is pretty much nothing but a listing of a complete, working e-mail GUI client - I was actually able to use this to check my own e-mail (POP only... but still!)
Section 3 on GUI programming is the best coverage on TKinter available anywhere. This section alone is worth the price of the book, if you're ever going to touch TKinter. He doesn't cover Tix, unfortunately, but I believe that every single TKinter widget is discussed and demonstrated in example code. PMW and wxPython are mentioned, but just as in, "they exist" - this books perspective on GUI programming is TKinter only. Still, that's plenty to fill up 5 chapters.
This _is_ a good, useful, book - I got a lot more out of this than I got out of "Learning Python", but it can be a bit meandering at times - for its volume, I expected it to cover a lot more ground, although what the author does decide to cover, he covers in exquisite detail, including historical perspectives, real-world "war stories" and workable examples.Programming Python Overview
Already the industry standard for Python users, Programming Python from O'Reilly just got even better. This third edition has been updated to reflect current best practices and the abundance of changes introduced by the latest version of the language, Python 2.5.

Whether you're a novice or an advanced practitioner, you'll find this refreshed book more than lives up to its reputation. Programming Python, 3rd Edition, teaches you the right way to code. It explains Python language syntax and programming techniques in a clear and concise manner, with numerous examples that illustrate both correct usage and common idioms. By reading this comprehensive guide, you'll learn how to apply Python in real-world problem domains such as:

GUI programming
Internet scripting
Parallel processing
Database management
Networked applications

Programming Python, Third Edition covers each of these target domains gradually, beginning with in-depth discussions of core concepts and then progressing toward complete programs. Large examples do appear, but only after you've learned enough to understand their techniques and code.

Along the way, you'll also learn how to use the Python language in realistically scaled programs--concepts such as Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and code reuse are recurring side themes throughout this text. If you're interested in Python programming, then this O'Reilly classic needs to be within arm's reach. The wealth of practical advice, snippets of code, and patterns of program design can all be put into use on a daily basis--making your life easier and more productive.

Reviews of the second edition:

"...about as comprehensive as any book can be." --Dr. Dobb's Journal

"If the language had manuals, they would undoubtedly be the texts from O'Reilly...'Learning Python' and 'Programming Python' are definitive treatments." --SD Times

MySQL Administrator's Guide and Language Reference (2nd Edition) ReviewThe MySQL Administrator's Guide by MySQL Press is the ultimate reference for anyone installing, upgrading or maintaining the MySQL database server. I found this guide to be completely invaluable when using MySQL, even before I had downloaded the software. The Guide uses clear, easy to read, formatting which makes shell instructions stand out from MySQL statements. A detailed index takes no time to show you where in 600 pages your answer lies. And you can bet you'll find the answer in this Guide. Beginners beware, however, this is no introduction to MySQL. Readers should have a clear understanding of their system, along with experience of MySQL, although an insight into MySQL AB and MySQL's history is included in Chapter 1.
As I began reading through this Guide, I couldn't help notice immediately how it sets itself apart from similar books. The MySQL Admin Guide has a detail which you will not find anywhere else. Such is to be expected from the company who make the software, and this book certainly shows the high quality of MySQL. After reading through this book, I can't help but agree with Kaj Arno (Vice President Software Engineering, MySQL AB) who is quoted on the back page; "'It is not possible to find a more thorough and more current reference in print, anywhere'". One of the best example I can make of this fact is in Chapter 2 which focuses on Installing MySQL. Not only does this Guide list all the option of a source distribution, all the ins and outs of installing MySQL on all likely platforms - Windows, Mac OS X, NetWare, Linux and other general Unix systems - this guide also deals with Upgrading and Downgrading the most recent version of the MySQL database server. And of course, to ensure that the entire knowledge is in print, Perl installation notes are included too. What other book covers the often troublesome installation process in almost 150 pages of detail?
And that's only the second chapter. Throughout the book you're assured to find comprehensive information straight from the people who know it best. You may think that this book simply offers too much information, and for most people I would have to agree. It is unlikely to bother a system administrator how MySQL server optimizes the WHERE clause, or how to avoid table scans. Even if someone was interested in understanding something like this, they'd have the opportunity of looking at the MySQL Reference Manual online. So why buy the print version? The printed Guide not only allows for offline viewing, it also includes information which has not been included in the Reference Manual, such as how details are stored and the many feature of MySQL's MaxDB. If your not content with only having part of the story, you'll want to get this Guide.
The MySQL Administrator's Guide is the ideal book for system administrators who want to get the most out of their MySQL server. With all the advice on installing, maintaining and administering that you'll ever need to know, this Guide by MySQL AB is ideal for those who long for a comprehensive printed reference.MySQL Administrator's Guide and Language Reference (2nd Edition) OverviewWritten by the creators of MySQL and edited by one of the most highly respected MySQL authors, the MySQL Administrator's Guide and Language Reference is the official guide to installing MySQL, to setting up and administering MySQL databases, and to storing and retrieving data in these databases. This new edition combines into one book the MySQL Language Reference (on CD) with the practical information of the MySQL Administrator's Guide book.

Wikis For Dummies ReviewThis provides a solid overview of the history, general functions, and common uses of Wikis, and for that I am glad that I read it. One thing that I didn't consider until after I bought it -- and was using a few wikis already -- was that a great deal of the information was engine-specific. PBWiki was a common example throughout the book, but I don't use PBWiki, and I don't like the interface (I guess I got used to Wikispaces, which works perfectly for me). So although there was a great deal of good information about what I can do with a wiki, so much of the how wasn't useful to me, since I'll have to go learn the particulars of my engine of choice, rather than the ones in the book.Wikis For Dummies Overview
Corporations have finally realized the value of collaboration tools for knowledge sharing and Wiki is the open source technology for creating collaborative Web sites, as either a public site on the Internet or on a private intranet site
Shows readers how to set up Wikis in a corporate setting or on a personal site so that users can retrieve information, post information, and edit the content
Covers everything from choosing a Wiki engine to administration and maintenance
Discusses the advantages of using Wiki in a corporate environment, which companies such as Microsoft, Boeing, Disney, and Motorola have already discovered

Applied Equity Analysis: Stock Valuation Techniques for Wall Street Professionals ReviewJames English's "Applied Equity Analysis" is a how-to manual on evaluating stocks based on his 20 years of experience at JP Morgan. The book is very well-written and readable since the author employs plain english (no pun intended) to make his three major points: 1) accounting numbers--while by no means perfect--are excellent tools in evaluating stocks, 2) accounting-based stock valuation is superior to (but does not neccessarily supplant) cash flows, and 3) competition ensures that eye-popping financial performance doesn't last forever.
Contrary to another reviewer, English employs excellent examples to clarify and explain his points. Some examples: Gateway 2000's earnings history was used to explain how to find and interpret non-recurring items (NRI) on financial statements. Ratio analysis was demonstrated by looking at the PC industry in 1998. Emerson Electric was the company chosen to show why mature companies were still good buys. Many other examples abound, and English does a successful job in tying their relevance to his arguements.
But successful use of examples is not just the only strength of the book. The author also tackles a range of topics complete with insightful and clear discussions: the flaws of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Economic Value Added (EVA), financial statement analysis, fundamental analysis, etc.
A quick glance at the table of contents below gives you an idea of the scope of English's book. I highly recommend this book to not just Wall Street analysts, anyone who is interested in finding fundamental value in evaluating stocks instead of following the crowd.

Oracle PL/SQL Programming, 4th Edition ReviewAre you an application developer or database administrator? Well, you're in luck! Authors Steven Feuerstein and Bill Pribyl, have done an outstanding job of writing a 4th edition of a book that provides comprehensive useful coverage of the PL/SQL language.
Feuerstein and Pribyl, begin with an introduction to the PL/SQL language. Then, they show you how to get PL/SQL programs up and running as quickly as possible. The authors continue by reviewing the fundamentals of the PL/SQL language: what makes a PL/SQL statement, an introduction to the block structure, and how to write comments in PL/SQL. They also explore conditional and sequential control statements, loops, and exception handling in the PL/SQL language. They continue by looking at various types of program data you can define in PL/SQL, such as numbers, strings, records, and collections. In addition, the authors next address one of the most central elements of PL/SQL code construction: the connection to the underlying database, which takes place through the SQL language. They also show you the building blocks of applications, which include procedures, functions, triggers, and packages, and how to move information into and out of PL/SQL programs. Then, the authors explore the security-related challenges you face as you build PL/SQL programs. They continue by exploring the inside of PL/SQL, including PL/SQL's use of memory. In addition, the authors provide guidance for PL/SQL developers who need to address issues of globalization and localization. They also provide an in-depth guide to the object-oriented features of Oracle. Finally, they show you how to invoke Java and C code from your PL/SQL applications.
If you are new to PL/SQL, reading this excellent book from beginning to end should improve your PL/SQL skills and deepen your understanding of the language. Needless to say, if you're already a proficient PL/SQL programmer, you'll probably want to dip into the appropriate sections of this book to extract particular techniques for immediate application.
Oracle PL/SQL Programming, 4th Edition Overview
For the past ten years, O'Reilly's Oracle PL/SQL Programming has been the bestselling book on PL/SQL, Oracle's powerful procedural language. Packed with examples and helpful recommendations, the book has helped everyone--from novices to experienced developers, and from Oracle Forms developers to database administrators--make the most of PL/SQL.

The fourth edition is a comprehensive update, adding significant new content and extending coverage to include the very latest Oracle version, Oracle Database 10g Release 2. It describes such new features as the PL/SQL optimizing compiler, conditional compilation, compile-time warnings, regular expressions, set operators for nested tables, nonsequential collections in FORALL, the programmer-defined quoting mechanism, the ability to backtrace an exception to a line number, a variety of new built-in packages, and support for IEEE 754 compliant floating-point numbers.

The new edition adds brand-new chapters on security (including encryption, row-level security, fine-grained auditing, and application contexts), file, email, and web I/O (including the built-in packages DBMS_OUTPUT, UTL_FILE, UTL_MAIL, UTL_SMTP, and UTL_HTTP) and globalization and localization.

Co-authored by the world's foremost PL/SQL authority, Steven Feuerstein, this classic reference provides language syntax, best practices, and extensive code, ranging from simple examples to complete applications--making it a must-have on your road to PL/SQL mastery. A companion web site contains many more examples and additional technical content for enhanced learning.

Programming Microsoft® Visual Basic® 2005: The Language (Pro Developer) ReviewThere haven't been many good books that take Visual Basic .NET seriously as a full-featured Object Oriented Programming language for the .NET platform. Every other book on VB .NET is nothing but screenshot after screenshot of "drag-and-drop" development using Visual Studio.
Programming with the .NET framework encompasses a huge spectrum of things to learn. VB .NET the language, Visual Studio IDE, ASP .NET , ADO .NET, Windows Forms, Windows Services, Serviced Components and Interop are some of those things. After trying many VB books out there, I can confidently say that covering the entire breadth of topics makes a book shallow.
This book picks a select few of the above-mentioned topics and drills very deep into them. It focuses on the language constructs and shows us better programming techniques. Going through a few chapters, I've already learned many ways to write better code.
I'm glad this book doesn't spend a few hundred pages on ADO.NET and ASP.NET (there are some very good books that cover those topics... see below). Doing so would have taken space away from the valuable (and rare) content on the language itself.
This book won't show you how to create a drag-and-drop Windows/Web app. What it will do is make you a much better programmer.
Here's a list of some of the best books for VB Developers currently for sale:
- For Database Programming: Pro ADO.NET 2.0 (Sahil Malik; Apress)
- For ASP.NET Web Development: Programming Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Core Reference (Dino Esposito; MS Press)
- Best-practices for .NET: Practical Guidelines and Best Practices for Microsoft Visual Basic and Microsoft Visual C# Developers (Francesco Balena, Giuseppe Dimauro; MS Press)
- Good overall crash-course to get things started: Programming Visual Basic 2005 (Jesse Liberty; O'Reilly)
And of course, to master the most fundamental thing of all, the language itself, I recommend this book.Programming Microsoft® Visual Basic® 2005: The Language (Pro Developer) Overview

C# 4.0 How-To ReviewThis book's title does not quite match its content but the book's introduction does indicate this. This is primarily a very good book of code and code algorithms in the .NET framework using C#. That being said the book does cover the changes made to the .NET 4.0 framework and to C# 4.0.
The code is very well written--it is beautiful well structured communicative code. The code in the book is sparsely commented; it is so well-written that few comments are needed. As I have said, in many ways the book is a book of code algorithms, for example, in chapter 5 Convert Between Number Bases, Convert a Number to Bytes, Determine if an Integer is Even, Determine if a Number is Prime, Count the Number of 1 Bits etc. All these code examples are useful algorithms but have nothing to do with .NET Framework 4.0 or C# 4.0 per se.
Despite what the Introduction says this is decidedly not a book for beginners. While they may be able to find useful algorithms here and there the content of the book is way too terse for a beginner to follow and they should turn to other books for a more complete introduction to C#. Chapter 8 on regular expressions will only be useful to programmers that already have the basics of regular expressions well-understood otherwise even the first few code examples will leave them scratching their heads. This book does not do any hand-holding but rather shows you in very practical ways how to use the C# language and the .NET framework.
I loved the code examples using dynamic types as this was the best example I have yet seen of using them in a practical straight-forward way. The code is the book is not just useful and terse but it is also elegant. For example, the ternary operator is used multiple times in the CompressFile project in Chapter 11 producing really elegant concise and clear code.
The book, not the down-loadable code, has a few errors and code bugs but very few, for example:
Pg 16 code won't compile since _x is private and therefore not accessible to the derived class
Pg 17 line Console.WriteLine(d.MyProperty().ToString()); wont compile
Pg 17 code wont compile, class Derived not inheriting from Base class--missing : base
DoSomething method in class Derived needs to be marked override not virtual to eliminate compiler warning
Pg 65 example code given says, "Because ArgumentNullException is a type of ArgumentException, and ArgumentException is first in the catch list, it will be called." This is not true as the compiler is smart enough to recognize the problem and results in a compiler error and therefore the code will not even run.
I recommend this book for intermediate and advanced developers. Read the book and study the code examples and you will:
1) Learn the .NET Framework 4.0
2) Learn C# 4.0
3) Add to your inventory of useful code algorithms
4) Improve your written code by reading and studying the elegant code in this book.C# 4.0 How-To OverviewReal Solutions for C# 4.0 ProgrammersNeed fast, robust, efficient code solutions for Microsoft C# 4.0? Animal Life: Secrets of the Animal World Revealed (American Museum of Natural History) ReviewThis color-drenched, fact-packed, museum-in-a-book falls open to a double-page spread of a rainbow-hued lizard with a catapulting tongue as long as its body caught in the act of snaring dinner. Or maybe a double-page spread of a maniacal hyena frightening off a pack of dogs. Not an image to share with your 5-year-old before bedtime. Or yourself, for that matter.
But it's not all big spreads of amazing pictures. The photos are great, but most are a lot smaller in order to fit as many in as possible. Like the Natural History Museum itself, the book aims to teach and inspire its readers and browsers to go out and learn more.
It begins with an overview of animal classification, followed by an exploration of the various anatomies animals have evolved to accomplish the basic tasks of circulation, support, digestion, reproduction, etc.
But the book's heart is behavior. Here we find the action shots and the awe-inducing factoids concerning eight major areas of life: Living Space, Hunting and Feeding, Defense, Sex and Reproduction, Birth and Development, Society, Communication, and Intelligence.
There's a marvelous spread of bats night fishing and smaller, more educational shots of their big ears and sharp teeth. We see cubs play fighting adorably and their parents putting those lessons to work in the real world. While the shots of fierce birds and cute mammals always draw the eye, some of the most fascinating creatures are the insects and amphibians we seldom see or pay attention to.
The Texas horned lizard, for instance, repels attackers with a squirt of its own foul-tasting blood and up to 100 male garter snakes will mob a female in a big squirming ball, from which she will choose just one. There are water spiders that breathe air but build a silken diving bell that allows them to live underwater their whole lives.
I could go on and on, of course; readers will pore over the text and pictures both. While the information is necessarily broad and the facts tantalizing, many readers may be inspired to learn more about the animals within. A gorgeous and fascinating overview of the animal kingdom for all ages.Animal Life: Secrets of the Animal World Revealed (American Museum of Natural History) OverviewDestined to be the ultimate authority on animal communities, Animal Life explores and explains every aspect of animal behavior, including courtship and mating rituals, family relationships and defense mechanisms, hunting techniques and feeding habits. The Piercing Bible: The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing ReviewI am in a unique position to write a review of this book as I am emergency/flight nurse, but also a non-pierced, non-tattooed medical consultant for the Association of Professional Piercers. Starting several years ago when I first began researching the medical myths vs. research realities regarding body mods, Elayne has been an invaluable resource. Her first hand knowledge regarding the history and future of body piercing practices is unequaled and this is evident throughout this book. The Piercing Bible is an excellent summary of body art jewelry, piercing options, and aftercare, as well as confirming/disputing several urban legends regarding body art. For those with body art, contemplating acquiring body art, or those caring for those with body art, I highly recommend this unparalled resource.
