Enterprise Application Development in SharePoint 2010 - Creating an End-to-End Application without Code ReviewThis is a good book! Ira takes an effective approach to teaching you how to combine powerful features of SharePoint such as Lists, Libraries, InfoPath Eletronic Forms, Business Connectivity Services and SharePoint Designer Workflow.
Ira lives up to his promise of demonstrating enterprise applications on SharePoint without code. and along the way, you learn a valuable tip on how to combine these technologies on every page. As someone who specializes in Business Process Automation and Workflow, I use just about all the techniques he demonstrates in this book on every project I work on, and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much practical and useful advice Ira managed to fit into one book.Enterprise Application Development in SharePoint 2010 - Creating an End-to-End Application without Code Overview

Office and SharePoint 2010 User's Guide: Integrating SharePoint with Excel, Outlook, Access and Word (Expert's Voice in Office and Sharepoint) ReviewI early purchased this book, not so much based on past experience but because it was one of the first advertised.
As long as you understand up front that it is a very high level book for beginners you will be OK. I have several years experience working with the 2003, and 2007 versions and have worked with 2010 since beta.
In particular I was interested in Document Sets, a brilliant and much needed document management tool. I'm sorry to report that the book really didn't do justice to the subject. It did reference them several times and there were a few nuggets, but overall too light.
It reads well and is fairly well organized.
I honestly have not used the Office 2010 portion of the book at all so I won't say anything more on the subject.
If you are looking for user level help with SharePoint 2010, get the Shepard's Guide instead. (I'm not affiliated with them by the way)Office and SharePoint 2010 User's Guide: Integrating SharePoint with Excel, Outlook, Access and Word (Expert's Voice in Office and Sharepoint) OverviewMicrosoft Office SharePoint Server 2010 and Windows SharePoint Services 4.0 provide a collection of tools and services you can use to improve user and team productivity, make information sharing more effective, and facilitate business decision-making processes. Designing Forms for SharePoint and InfoPath: Using InfoPath Designer 2010 (2nd Edition) (Microsoft .NET Development Series) ReviewWhile the book is pretty detailed in its coverage of InfoPath 2010, it can be be very difficult to follow the examples, which tend to be embedded in the text of the book (i.e.: not broken out into clear and easy to follow steps). The examples often tend to gloss over critical steps, and waste time on much more obvious details. If only the examples were better constructed and presented, the book would be worthy of a more positive review.Designing Forms for SharePoint and InfoPath: Using InfoPath Designer 2010 (2nd Edition) (Microsoft .NET Development Series) OverviewTogether, InfoPath 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 make it possible to create end-to-end solutions that combine powerful forms, enterprise-scale workflow, and access to key business data. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration: Real World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond (Exam 70-668) ReviewI passed exam 70-668 three weeks ago using this text as part of my prep material. However it contains very broad infomation that is not tested. The test is entirely scenario/case based (every question) and you must know how to implement SharePoint's features to design a solution to meet the business case being presented. The test does not allow you to review your answers. Once answered, you are commited to it. If you are an experienced IT pro you'll find that fully 85% of the material in this text is "filler", (i.e., you already know what a processor is and that you need routers and switches to connect computers togehter) that does not provide the needed background information to know when or how you would use a given SharePoint feature to meet the criteria of the scenario you'll be asked to meet. The 15% of the remaining material is of value, particulalry the exercises. Here is how you pass 70-668: a. Work the exercises in this text until you can explain to someone else why doing what the exercise calls for is being done. b. Go through every feature (yes, every single one) of SharePoint 2010 and pull it's related technet article to know how/when to use it. You don't need to know specific configuration steps - that's what exam 70-667 is about. Example - be able to explain when you'd use a site vs a web page to meet a given scenario, not how to create one. Good luck.
I hold 12 certs and two trainer credentials.Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration: Real World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond (Exam 70-668) OverviewDelivers the information that SharePoint 2010 administrators in the field need most

Professional SharePoint 2010 Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewIn the light of some of the poor reviews below, I wanted to offer my opinion on this book.
I have worked with SharePoint for years both as a developer and architect, so you can trust me when I say I know how complex this product has become. To expect a book to in detail cover all possible corners of the API is simply silly -it wouldnt be done until next version of the product was out...
The book has a good balance between describing the wealth of new features and supplying code samples for the features in question. Extra details are found in the downloadable code samples. This is what I expect; I really find it annoying if I have to read page after page of HTML or boiler plate code. What I pay for are words from the experts, not a ton of code samples.
This book is to the point and very usable for both developers on all levels and architects planning how to build sites on this new platform.Professional SharePoint 2010 Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewLearn to leverage the features of the newest version of SharePoint, in this update to the bestseller
More than simply a portal, SharePoint is Microsoft's popular content management solution for building intranets and Web sites or hosting wikis and blogs. SharePoint guru Tom Rizzo offers broad coverage of the newest version of SharePoint, Microsoft's popular content management solution
Addresses how the new version adds enhanced developer support for ASP.NET, Ajax, LINQ, and Silverlight
Demonstrates how to take advantage of new features, including improvements to offline and mobile client capabilities, social networking additions, and more
Covers user experience development, platform services, social media features, event handling, the business data catalog, forms and workflow, business intelligence, and more

With this book, you'll get exhaustive coverage on the many possibilities that exist with SharePoint.

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Developer Reference ReviewThis is a great SharePoint book for developers and really does justice in covering product as big as SharePoint 2010. The author really knows his stuff and he explains it in a very fluent manner. One thing I particularly like about this book is writing style that keeps you engage from first to last chapter. Perhaps this is mainly because this book is written by a single author.
The chapters are very well separated and build good foundation to start with and then tackle the advance topics. Also the coverage of all the topics is very precise and without any unnecessary fluff. As SharePoint is a huge product I was not expecting every part of its functionality to be covered but there is enough in this book to take you from basic to advance level of SharePoint development. Also chapters are done in a way that by the time you finish a chapter, most likely you will want to really develop something based on the concept learned rather than waiting for next chapter, I found this very good while learning something really new.
Two things I notice missing are coverage of how to setup your SharePoint development environment and total absence of Visual Studio 2010. Other than these two points this book is perfect.

Pro SharePoint 2010 Business Intelligence Solutions ReviewOne of the best SharePoint 2010 books that I have seen. Here are the 2 main reasons I decided to buy the book:
1) Specific domain expertise around BI using SharePoint, and not a general SharePoint book that tries to boil the ocean by covering many large topics within one chapter each (but leaves you without enough in-depth coverage and expertise developed in any area).
2) I have heard Srini Sistla speak at a couple of SharePoint events on the east coast, and he knows a lot about SharePoint development. I usually buy books by authors who I am familiar with and that I know are active in the SharePoint community.
I'm glad I got it! Here is what I think and what I liked most:
* I felt like I learned something tangible after each chapter. Plenty of practical examples, and step-by-step instructions, to balance out theory.
* Good if you are looking for a practical and technical book to start using some of SharePoint's BI technology hands-on. It's not a book that will teach you BI, so don't look for it to teach you data warehousing and BI like a Ralph Kimball book would . This is more about applying SharePoint related technologies for common BI needs. Chapter 1 does go through the basics of BI, and an introduction to some of the related pieces in the Microsoft stack related to BI (SQL Server 2010, SSIS, etc).
* There aren't many books out there that have a thorough chapter on new SharePoint 2010 capabilities from a BI perspective, let alone a book focusing on them holistically (with real working code, case studies, etc). Coverage of Visio Services was a favorite, as there is so much new power with SharePoint 2010 that isn't covered much elsewhere (even by Microsoft). This book also covers in detail PerformancePoint Services, Excel Services (and Power Pivot), Reporting Services and Business Connectivity Services (BCS).
* The book also does a good job showing the inter-connectivity with other Microsoft technologies, without going off-track. The other technologies always relate to the topic at hand, and show you practical examples that you can leverage (such as with WCF, Office Applications, PowerShell, etc)
* Learning about BCS is a must for any enterprise that wants to properly leverage what SharePoint 2010 can offer. This book will leave you with new skills and clear examples of how they can be leveraged by 2010's BI suite, as well envisioning how the technologies and principles from Chapter 4 can be leveraged elsewhere. The BCS chapter also teaches you how to utilize Enterprise Content Types (ECT) with SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visual Studio 2010.
* You can run the examples yourself since it's using the Adventure Works database (book's code is online as well).
* Structure of the book: Each of the SharePoint BI Services (Visio, Excel, PerformancePoint, SSRS, BCS, etc) have one dedicated chapter a piece. Each of them start with an introduction and a clear overview of "what you will learn" by the end of the chapter. What I really appreciated is also going over any setup and configuration to get you started to use that Service (so it's all in one book, and no need to surf the web for setup details or find an Admin book). Next you have what the authors call a Problem Case, that outlines the goal and solution (step-by-step). There are usually more than one Problem Case in a chapter, and they all build on one another (so the set of Problem Cases are like a larger Case Study). This approach, and the practical and fun cases, make it very easy to follow along and actually "do it" and to help learn and retain the knowledge. Lastly, the chapters end with a 3-block roadmap that summarizes how all the pieces fit together (sort of like a summary slide in a presentation).
* Audience: This book is useful for anyone who works on SharePoint projects and plans to use it's BI components. It also addresses aspects that DBAs, Administrators and Architects would want to know as well. So many roles can use this book, and not just developers.
All in all a great book that I have enjoyed and learned a lot from, and that will serve as a handy resource for frequent reference as well.Pro SharePoint 2010 Business Intelligence Solutions Overview
