Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core ReviewFor those of us who've performed more than 50 percent of our administration tasks from the command line (in Windows) for that past 15+ years, it's nice to see that Microsoft is still committed to this method of administration. It's also good to see a book like this that teaches a new generation of technology professionals how to get things done most efficiently - at the command prompt.
Windows Server 2008 intrduces the "core" concept, which is an implementation of Windows Server without the full GUI. You use command line commands to do everything from creating user accounts to setting up services. This book is your one-stop shop to find out how to get it all done.
Divided into seven parts, this book provides you with detailed step-by-step instructions for every major task (and most minor ones) that you'll need to perform in a Windows Server Core installation. The books starts by explaining what Windows Server Core actually is and then moves on to coverage of basic command line usage. For those who've been working at the command line for years, you may be able to skip straight to Part 3, "Working with the Hardware".
Parts 3-5 will probably be used most frequently as an ongoing refernce. Part 3 teaches you how to work with files, the network and other hardware devices. Part 4 moves to working with applications and services and also the monitoring of the same. Part 5 provides an overview of user management and security.
Parts 6 and 7 also provide beneficial coverage of third-party addons and working with IIS. The Appendices are very helpful as they provide lists of command line tricks, as well as various listings of the available commands.
The batch file section will also be invaluable for those who may have created batch files in the past (for example, when working in DOS), but have grown rusty through lack of utilization.
Overall, this is the best Window Server 2008 book on my shelf so far (among five others).

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Implementation and Administration ReviewI have found this book very helpful with my exchange upgrade, it does talk about various subjects. It also mentioned LCR and SCR areas I am very interested in. It is more like a "nice to know" more then a "need to know" book. I will mainly use to to refer back to see what the author has to say. I used other internet site, and my own guesswork to do the upgrade to exchange 2007. I am looking forward to other books, like ones that are 1500 pages. I really would like for someone to cover DR and SCR in great detail, like multi-site failover scenerios. Overall, this is a quality book, it was VERY helpful with OWA an area I was baffled on and could not find the info on the internet. To be fair, I have not read it from page 1 to the end, but for me that one fix was worth the cost of the book. So far, this is the only book I could find that covers SP1 and SCR, so it is the best out there for now. My desire is to learn everything about exchange 2007, so I will have to hunt for a larger book on the other subjects I want to learn in detail. Overall I would recommend for everyone. use this book, and the internet because you are going to need to find TONS of information to do the upgrade to 2007. It was not easy in my opinion, and I have been doing this for 15 years. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration: Real World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond (Exam 70-668) ReviewI passed exam 70-668 three weeks ago using this text as part of my prep material. However it contains very broad infomation that is not tested. The test is entirely scenario/case based (every question) and you must know how to implement SharePoint's features to design a solution to meet the business case being presented. The test does not allow you to review your answers. Once answered, you are commited to it. If you are an experienced IT pro you'll find that fully 85% of the material in this text is "filler", (i.e., you already know what a processor is and that you need routers and switches to connect computers togehter) that does not provide the needed background information to know when or how you would use a given SharePoint feature to meet the criteria of the scenario you'll be asked to meet. The 15% of the remaining material is of value, particulalry the exercises. Here is how you pass 70-668: a. Work the exercises in this text until you can explain to someone else why doing what the exercise calls for is being done. b. Go through every feature (yes, every single one) of SharePoint 2010 and pull it's related technet article to know how/when to use it. You don't need to know specific configuration steps - that's what exam 70-667 is about. Example - be able to explain when you'd use a site vs a web page to meet a given scenario, not how to create one. Good luck.
