Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 ReviewIn her typically superb fashion, Sue has crafted an indispensable reference that digs into the internals of Outlook. A few topics discussed: How Outlook stores data, User Profiles, PRF files (what are those? Buy the book to find out) security, and more.
One of the things that really stood out to me in this book was the Appendixes where you'll find details on policy settings, outlook registry settings and even how to disable various portions of the Outlook user interface.
Another excellent resource is chapter 5 that deals with Exchange connectivity. Outlook has steadily added new ways to talk to Exchange, all with their own set of Pro's and Con's. Personally, I think many companies have overlooked some of the options. Oracle PL/SQL Programming, 4th Edition ReviewAre you an application developer or database administrator? Well, you're in luck! Authors Steven Feuerstein and Bill Pribyl, have done an outstanding job of writing a 4th edition of a book that provides comprehensive useful coverage of the PL/SQL language.
Feuerstein and Pribyl, begin with an introduction to the PL/SQL language. Then, they show you how to get PL/SQL programs up and running as quickly as possible. The authors continue by reviewing the fundamentals of the PL/SQL language: what makes a PL/SQL statement, an introduction to the block structure, and how to write comments in PL/SQL. They also explore conditional and sequential control statements, loops, and exception handling in the PL/SQL language. They continue by looking at various types of program data you can define in PL/SQL, such as numbers, strings, records, and collections. In addition, the authors next address one of the most central elements of PL/SQL code construction: the connection to the underlying database, which takes place through the SQL language. Microsoft® Windows® XP Inside Out, Second Edition (Bpg-Inside Out) ReviewThis huge volume is definitely a must-have guide for everyone aspiring to becoming a Windows XP advanced user. Casual users should stay away for now until they become familiar with Windows. Also, strangely, you won't find coverage of Windows Movie Maker in this otherwise complete power user's guide to WinXP.
This "deluxe edition" is hardcover (vs. paperback for the regular, cheaper edition), has two added chapters (one on fax and one on advanced user adminitration), and includes a couple interesting e-books from Microsoft on the CD-ROM, in addition to an e-book version of the book itself.
This book covers both the Pro and Home editions of WinXP -- and each chapter has a handy brief discussion of the differences between the two editions. In fact, I find this feature, together with the two extra free e-books, worth the price premium over the regular edition. Besides, hardcovers are just easier to lay down on a desk and they last longer as well.
In terms of "meaty stuff," this book will satisfy your hunger for advanced knowledge of XP. After reading the book you'll become an XP expert. If you want to become a guru, then get the other "Inside Out" books such as Windows XP Networking Inside Out and Windows XP Security Inside Out (highly recommended). Or you can use this book as a jumping board to acquire some advanced knowledge and then figure out the guru-advanced topics yourself. Either way, this book can help you master Windows XP.
Still not convinced? Pick a copy and read the chapter on system optimization. Clearly written and organized, the chapter gives you everything you need to know about optimizing Windows, including the best explanation of the performance monitor I've come across (as well as concrete steps for taking advantage of this and other tools).
