The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence ReviewTrainers for intercultural competence are a dime-a-dozen in the business world, sometimes offering little more than personal experience and a rehash of Geert Hofstede's work on culture and organization in an upbeat but overpriced two-day seminar. They would do well to take note of this wide-ranging and thorough work. Divided into three parts (concepts, applications, and research and assessment), the handbook offers teachers, educators and others in the field a valuable reference for what's happening among major university researchers, up-and-coming practitioners, and established organizations dedicated to the study of intercultural competence. With over fifty contributors, the handbook collects a variety of perspectives that are themselves admirably multicutural.
The handbook undoubtedly has an academic tilt; it's worth the cost for the bibliographies alone. Almost half of the book is devoted to a detailed and wide-ranging discussion of how intercultural competence is being defined in the academy and in the world. Identity, cognition, morality, citizenship receive careful attention. What's striking, though, is how this dense material is leavened with excellent diagrams, case studies, and illustrations. Where else could you find reflections on the intercultural competency of Ernest Shackleton?
What's most important to note is the book's common sense and immediate utility for professionals across any industry who work in a global context (which, of course, is practically everyone). An example: a list of forty external assessment tools that are available to assess intercultural competence, or aspects of it.
Still, the handbook's greatest contribution is to prompt critical analysis and informed conversation about how we are ever going to manage getting along together in the world. It's a complex subject, and those who ignore it--or treat with cavalier simplicity-- do so at their peril. I know that in my business (international education administration) we stand to learn a great deal from this typically-excellent SAGE publication.
The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence OverviewThe SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence brings together in one volume the leading experts and scholars from a variety of fields (e.g., education, communication, psychology, social work, health care, conflict studies, etc.) and from around the world who do work in intercultural competence (defined as appropriate and effective communication, as well as behavior, in intercultural situations). Given the current and future focus on global workforce development, and on globalization in general, this Handbook examines the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed in our ever diverse world. This Handbook is a vital compendium that any scholar, instructor, administrator, or student can pick up and use for a number of different topics related to intercultural competence:

Orality and Literacy (New Accents) ReviewThis book represents a very concise, easy to read summary of much of Ong's work in the area of human communications and technology. The depth of scholarship evident can easily be followed upon by using the wide-ranging bibliography. Ong masterfully takes the idea of the power of the alphabet, and points to the impact this has on human understanding, an impact which has not fully been accepted in philosophy, history, anthropology, sociology, etc. The student and scholar would do well to creatively interact with Ong's work.Orality and Literacy (New Accents) OverviewThis classic work explores the vast differences between oral and literate cultures offering a very clear account of the intellectual, literary and social effects of writing, print and electronic technology. In the course of his study, Walter J. Ong offers fascinating insights into oral genres across the globe and through time, and examines the rise of abstract philosophical and scientific thinking. He considers the impact of orality-literacy studies not only on literary criticism and theory but on our very understanding of what it is to be a human being, conscious of self and other. This is a book no reader, writer or speaker should be without.
