The Definitive Guide to Plone ReviewEarlier this year I was evaluating a couple of content management systems (e.g., Bricolage, Typo3, Plone) for a project. Every system had compelling features, but Plone provided the best overall feature set (e.g., search, templating, workflow, user management) in a single package. Plone runs on top of Zope, a popular Python-based open source web application server. Many consider Zope to be Python's killer-app, similarly Plone may be one of Zope's killer-apps. After my initial experimentation with Plone, I was really impressed with its ease of use and the power and flexibility of its page templating system. Strengths aside, Plone's online documentation did not adequately address advanced topics. I often found myself sifting through bits of online howtos and other people's examples to understand how to do certain things. Not only was this time consuming but also hit-or-miss.
Enter The Definitive Guide to Plone by Andy McKay. This book provides a series of task-driven chapters with practical information necessary for you to develop great web applications in Plone. The reader is assumed to be knowledgeable about HTML, CSS, the Web, and Python (for advanced features of Plone). Each chapter begins with an overview of what will be covered and uses examples to clarify concepts. A novice user can read cover to cover and come away with a working knowledge of Plone and be able to create relatively sophisticated web sites. A more advanced user can skim the chapter outline, pick and choose topics of interest and quickly find answers.
Who is the author? Andy McKay is a core developer of the Plone CMS project and an active contributor to a variety of Python-based open source projects. McKay also maintains ZopeZen.org, a web site dedicated to Zope applications and extensions. All the examples in this text were reviewed by well-known Zope authority Michel Pelletier, co-author of the Zope book.
McKay aims for the novice user in the first four chapters. Beginning with a high-level introduction to the benefits of content management, then on to installing Plone, and finally how to do basic content editing and customizations. Those of you getting started with Plone will find the chapter on customizations to be most helpful. It shows you everything from changing a folder's default page to altering navigational tabs, further demonstrating Plone's flexibility. You'll notice that some of the text in this section is fairly self-explanatory (i.e., form field descriptions). You should be able to get going with a moderate Plone site after reading this section.
The next six chapters (5-10) go under the hood of Plone, and aims for administrators and developers. Templating is one of the first stumbling blocks when learning to use Plone, remarks McKay. To that end, McKay provides an excellent introduction to the building blocks of Plone's templating machinery, Template Attribute Language (TAL) and Macro Expansion TAL (METAL). McKay goes on to show you how to develop Script (Python) objects and web forms. Next, McKay breaks down Plone's concept of "skins" - images and styles surrounding the content, using the NASA Mars Rover website as an example. McKay moves on to discuss content workflow, one of the more complex features in Plone. Although he manages to explain individual concepts (e.g., states, transitions) well, he could have used some tougher (more real-world) examples to help readers tie in these concepts. Finally, the last two chapters in this section explain how to setup site permissions and users, and also integrate Plone with other systems (e.g., Apache, LDAP). Users looking to customize an existing Plone site should pay special attention here. Be sure to try out the examples, they will help you understand the concepts faster.
The last four chapters tackle advanced topics such as developing custom content types with Python code and Archetypes, indexing, and scalability. McKay provides an in-depth comparison of two approaches for creating new content types. First, using Python code to define content attributes, and second using Archetypes - a schema-based framework. McKay points out that Archetypes is the preferred way for development of products and content types by the Plone team. You can even use UML tools to model your content type, then generate a schema using ArchGenXML. From caching policies to Zope Enterprise Objects, the final chapter presents several techniques for improving your Plone site's performance.
The Definitive Guide to Plone fills the gap between the inadequacy of online howtos and the need to read through someone's example to find out how a particular thing is done. Users of all experience levels will benefit from the authoritative knowledge of the author. The writing style is clear, to the point and neutral. Blender 2.49 Scripting ReviewWhile the book provides valuable information about scripting using the Blender API library under version 2.49 this library is soon to be obsolete. Version 2.55, currently in beta-testing and soon to be released, no longer support the Blender API interface to python and is replaced by the new bpy API. This book is applicable only to the current 2.49 Blender version, and will soon become obsolete with the release of 2.55
A similar reference to scripting under 2.55 using the bpy API would be very useful, but this isn't that reference. So while it may be instructive learning the Blender API from this text it doesn't address the future Blender versions. As difficult as it can be staying current with the latest software this text provides no help achieving that goal. This is particularly disappointing as the bpy API has been available for several releases of blender and even a cursory comparison or review of the alternative API would have gone a long way improving the utility of this textBlender 2.49 Scripting OverviewThe focus of the book is on practical problems and how to solve them in Python. The examples given are useful programs that try to solve real-world needs. Each chapter revolves around a single concept giving several examples gradually growing in difficulty. Each section analyses the problem first before diving into coding and gives extensive background information to enable the reader to generalize from the specific problem to a wider range of challenges. The sample code is provided as fully working examples with all key issues extensively highlighted. All sample programs are clear and concise yet nothing essential is left out and the programming style focuses on readability rather than on stylistic rigor or efficiency. This book is for users comfortable with Blender as a modeling and rendering tool who want to expand their skills to include Blender scripting to automate laborious tasks and achieve results otherwise impossible. Blender experience is essential as is some experience in Python programming.

Spring Python 1.1 ReviewSpring Python 1.1 is a book for professional programmers who either wish
to venture into a world beyond traditional OOP and tackle problems
differently thanks to Spring Python's IoC & AOP features or simply have
practical issues - such as spreading the application across multiple
nodes - to solve. The book does not merely rephrase the comprehensive
reference documentation available at the project's website and I was
actually very curious on how the author would be laying out the material.
Greg took a very good approach of explaining the basic of IoC first and
building upon it in subsequent chapters although they can all be read
separately. All of the major Spring Python's building blocks are covered
and I can only applaud that despite its Java roots almost no XML is used
- that's a good news for all Python programmers fearing that "Spring"
means a lot of unnecessary XML, the prevailing majority of examples is
in pure Python. Java programmers wishing to leverage their existing
Spring skills won't be disappointed though as there are some chapters
devoted to how one can easily migrate a Spring Java IoC container over
to Spring Python one, there's also a discussion of how to use Spring
Python & Jython which, along with CPython, is also a target Python
implementation Spring Python can run on. But let that not confuse you,
the book is mostly written for Python programmers.
I liked it that the book was focusing on getting things done without
turning aside into discussing vaguely related concepts or nuances, for
instance the chapter on SQL doesn't do any 'quick recaps' of what SQL
and relational databases are as is unfortunately quite common in many
other books. On the other hand, not everyone is familiar with IoC and
AOP and I know that anyone unfamiliar with those concepts - regardless
of their primary programming language of choice - can easily take the
book and get acquainted with them. A superb idea was that most of the
chapters teach you how to write unit tests for the given Spring Python
component you'd want to use in your code, IoC, AOP, security, database
access and so on, that's an often neglected area and I was very happy to
see the author having placed an importance on it. Another good idea was
to create a case-study chapter which combines all the knowledge and
discusses it thoroughly.
All in all, it's a good book written by a practitioner for
practitioners, full of diagrams and examples that by necessity are
simple yet don't feel contrived and it's certainly not something you
need to plough through, it does a very good job of introducing the
reader to Spring Python and showing how to use its pluggable components
to write interesting and useful applications solving real-world
problems. If I were to pick a nit I'd only say that it would be nice if
the second edition contained at least a couple of examples of using
Spring Python's IoC YamlConfig, but that's only a matter of syntax so
the issue is really minor.Spring Python 1.1 OverviewThe book is an introduction to Spring Python. It starts with simple practical applications, moving on to more advanced applications with two advanced case studies at the end of the book. It is packed with screenshots, examples, and ready-to-use code making it very suitable for a beginner while also showing tactics and concepts suitable for the most experienced developers. Each chapter starts with a simple problem to solve, and then dives into how Spring Python provides the solution with step-by-step code samples. Along the way, screenshots and diagrams are used to show critical parts of the solution. The case studies start off with a handful of use cases, and then proceed step-by-step to incrementally develop features. Some use cases are left to the reader to implement as an exercise. Key problems discovered along the way are exposed and then solved, giving the reader the chance to solve them, or to read the author's solutions. This book is for Python developers who want to take their applications to the next level, by adding/using parts that scale their application up, without adding unnecessary complexity. It is also helpful for Java developers who want to mix in some Python to speed up their coding effort.

Python 3 Web Development Beginner's Guide ReviewPackt Publishing asked me to review "Python 3 Web Development Beginner's Guide" ([...]). I'll have to admit, it's a bit of an odd duck. A better (albeit overly verbose) title might have been "An Introduction to Rich Internet Application Development Using jQuery UI, a Very Modern Version of Python, a Relatively Old Python Web Application Framework Named CherryPy, and an Ancient Version of HTML Written by a Guy Who Uses Windows".
The first tipoff that this book was a bit strange was that the author uses Windows and some combination of Firefox and IE. It seems like most web developers use OS X (or occasionally Linux), and they prefer Chrome over IE.
The next tipoff was the use of jQuery UI. jQuery UI is a very modern technology which is often used to build rich internet applications. RIAs really aren't the sort of thing that I would expect to see in a book for beginners. What happened to the old days when beginning web applications focused on the server dynamically generating HTML? If I took the time to count the number of lines of code, I wouldn't be surprised if this book had more JavaScript than Python.
The title of this book mentions Python 3, but if you search for "Python 3" in the book, there are extremely few mentions of it. This book really isn't about Python 3 per se (as compared to Python 2); it has a lot more to do with jQuery UI.
Whereas Python 3 and jQuery UI are very modern technologies, standing in contrast is the book's use of HTML 4 and CherryPy. HTML 4 is an *ancient* version of HTML. I would expect anyone using jQuery UI to use either XHTML or HTML5. At the very least, I would have expected one of the transitional DTDs. Similarly, he uses CherryPy. Although I agree that CherryPy is solid code, it's also fairly old. It predates any of the modern Python frameworks.
This book claims to teach web development "without having to learn another web framework" [p. 1]. That's simply not true. It makes heavy use of CherryPy. The home page for CherryPy ([...]) calls it an "HTTP framework" and says that it has "everything you would expect from a decent web framework." It's not as full-featured as, say, Django, but parts in the example code such as "@cherrypy.expose" [p. 36] are certainly framework features. In fact, "@cherrypy.expose" is part of CherryPy's object publishing system, which it uses as a replacement for regex-based URL routing.
Another thing that's a bit strange about this book is that the author doesn't use a client-side or a server-side templating language. In JavaScript, he tends to use string concatenation, which is weird because there is a templating pluging for jQuery. On the server, he embeds HTML directly in the Python code, which is pretty ugly (as he mentions on p. 229).
Furthermore, the code is extremely sloppy. The code does not follow Python's style guide concerning whitespace (PEP-8) (see for example p. 145) even though PEP-8 is extremely standard in the Python community. Nor is it even self consistent. I don't know of anyone who puts a space before the colon in expressions such as "if not isinstance(name,str) :" [p. 146]. The indentation in the JavaScript is not only non-standard and inconsistent, it's occasionally completely wrong [p. 118] (i.e. the indentation disagrees with the braces).
Aside from bad style, I'm a little concerned about various coding practices. For instance, the JavaScript at the bottom of p. 40 has variables that don't use var. This means they're effectively global. This is extremely bad practice. Fortunately, he does use var in other places in the book.
On the subject of security, there are several standard security vulnerabilities that web applications must protect against: XSS (cross-site scripting vulnerabilities), SQL injection attacks, XSRF (cross-site request forgeries), and session fixation (or session hijacking) attacks. Every book on web development should cover these.
The book mentions XSS, but I fear it's approach may not be thorough enough. It does not mention the term "SQL injection" attack, but the ORM shown in the book does look to be somewhat safe. It mentions XSRF, but says that it's out of scope. It doesn't mention "session fixation" or "session hijacking". In general, I don't think the book is good enough about "escaping things" properly. For instance, on p. 293 the author creates a URL in JavaScript using values from a form, but he doesn't take care to URL encode the parameters.
Despite all of the above, I can say this about the book. The author does a good job explaining the web to beginners. Modern web applications are fairly complicated beasts. There's the client, the web server, and the database server, and they each require their own syntaxes. The author does a decent job explaining what runs where. It can be difficult for an expert web developer, such as myself, to remember that newbies might not know all these things.
In summary, will this book help you become a competent, professional web developer? Absolutely not. Is it as well written as, say, "Agile Web Development with Rails" ([...]). No. However, might it be a good way for a beginner to dip his toes in web development with Python and jQuery UI? Maybe.

Moderately experienced Python programmers who want to learn how to create fairly complex, database-driven, cross browser compatible web apps that are maintainable and look good will find this book of most use. All key technologies except for Python 3 are explained in detail.

Programming Python ReviewWow. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it's enormous. It took me almost a year to go through the whole thing, although I did stop and work through every single example. On the other hand, like "Learning Python", there are a lot of sidetracks that seem targeted at beginners which I felt could have easily been left out.
This book should be considered volume 2 of "Learning Python". "Learning Python" (or "volume 1") covers the core Python language in quite a bit of detail, but doesn't talk much about the library. "Programming Python", in turn, covers the Python library, but doesn't talk about the syntax of the language (you're expected to know all that already).
Even with 1500 pages, it would be impossible to do justice to the _entire_ Python library, so a useful subset is covered. The book is actually divided into seven subsections, and sections 2 (System Programming), 3 (GUI Programming), 4 (Internet Programming), and 5 (Tools and techniques) could each have legitimately been a book in their own right. Part 6 (Integration) was a bit weak compared to the others - it covered only two chapters, and was the only section of the book that included incomplete examples. Of course, Parts 1 & 7 were an introduction and an epilogue.
In terms of the Python standard library, "String Services", "File and Directory Access", "Data Persistence", "Generic Operating System Services", "Interprocess Communcation and Networking", "Internet Protocols and Support", and "Graphical User Interfaces" were covered indepth. "Internet Data Handling" and "Structured Markup Tools" were both touched on, but not really examined. Other Python-related topics such as Jython, Zope, ZODB and SWIG were discussed as well, along with examples.
The main strength of this book was its examples. I prefer to manually type each source example and run them, rather than downloading them from a web site - although it takes longer to work through the book that way, I end up retaining quite a bit more. For that reason, I'm frustrated by programming books that include incomplete examples (or at least not enough that I can reasonably fill in the blanks). Fortunately, this wasn't such a book - until the very last chapter, all of the examples were complete, although quite a few of them build on previous examples (sometimes a bit pointlessly, such as his GUIMixin "framework"). Chapter 15, for example, is pretty much nothing but a listing of a complete, working e-mail GUI client - I was actually able to use this to check my own e-mail (POP only... but still!)
Section 3 on GUI programming is the best coverage on TKinter available anywhere. This section alone is worth the price of the book, if you're ever going to touch TKinter. He doesn't cover Tix, unfortunately, but I believe that every single TKinter widget is discussed and demonstrated in example code. PMW and wxPython are mentioned, but just as in, "they exist" - this books perspective on GUI programming is TKinter only. Still, that's plenty to fill up 5 chapters.
This _is_ a good, useful, book - I got a lot more out of this than I got out of "Learning Python", but it can be a bit meandering at times - for its volume, I expected it to cover a lot more ground, although what the author does decide to cover, he covers in exquisite detail, including historical perspectives, real-world "war stories" and workable examples.Programming Python Overview

Pro Python System Administration Review"Pro Python System Administration" by Rytis Sileika is a surprisingly
good book. First and foremost, it is not a cookbook with a sysadmin
slant. 'Instead, it is organized as fully-worked-out sysadmin
problems that show how to use powerfully Python features (usually
extensions). The author succeeds in covering both a wide range of
problems and a reasonable range of tools.
Whereas some authors specialize in interesting command-line tools,
Sileika aims at administrative systems. Some of the problems he
covers are expected (such as automating the hard parts of Apache
configs and reporting stats), but others make the book more
interesting to read. The Amazon EC2/S3 section was a nice surprise,
as were the in-depth chapters on IP address allocation.
The tools covered are fairly standard, but the author pulls out some
elegant uses for some of them, such as advanced web site availability
that requires HTML parsing and database optimization with MySQL.
Basic understanding of Django is assumed but the sections that use it
hold up adequately for Django novices.
Overall, this book is probably a good addition to the shelves of most
sysadmins who are also Python-slingers.

Django 1.1 Testing and Debugging ReviewOnce again I felt completely absorbed by the style chosen for this Packt Publishing book, as it makes use of a complete application to reinforce all of the topics covered. You start with a brief explanation of the benefits of testing your code and immediately start building a market research application from scratch.
Every chapter is built on the previous one, covering topics such as doctests, unittests, and adding coverage information and reports via Ned Batchelder's coverage script. You also learn about using Django's ''django.test.Client module and Twill to perform web testing and make sure that what your users see in their web browser is valid content and what they expected.
I liked the fact that several chapters were dedicated to showing you how to properly debug, log, and understand the information collected by these methods. Also how to fix any issues that may come up during the development phase, as well as write tests to catch them! I have definitely learned several new ways to look at debug information that I will make sure to add to my arsenal. Some of the tools you'll learn include the awesome Django Debug Toolbar (I wrote about it here) and even the Python debugger (pdb), so if you've never heard of either one or need a refresher, you'll enjoy the last chapters of this book.
By the time you're done reading this book, you'll have a complete market researching tool, including some Fancy Nancy charts generated by pygooglechart or matplotlib AND instructions on how to deploy it in a production environment and perform some load tests using siege!
Overall, this book offers good quality screenshots, clear and concise directions and working source code to follow along! I recommend it for anyone who's doing Django development out there and would like to improve the quality of their applications by adding (more) tests!Django 1.1 Testing and Debugging OverviewThis book teaches by example. It walks in detail through development of a sample application, illustrating each step via complete working code and either screenshots or console snippets. The cumbersome and time consuming task of debugging will be a cake walk with this book.If you are a Django application developer who wants to create robust applications quickly that work well and are easy to maintain in the long term, this book is for you. This book is the right pick if you want to be smartly tutored to make best use of Django's rich testing and debugging support and make testing an effortless task.Basic knowledge of Python, Django, and the overall structure of a database-driven web application is assumed. Python For Dummies ReviewI agree with some of the reviewers here, it is definitely disappointing to see a bad seed among the good "... for dummies" series. I have previous experience with programming languages, although this is not my everyday task. I got interested in Python and wanted the book to guide me through the basics. After reading the first 7-8 chapters I started asking myself whether I missed something in the previous ones, as I lost track (and interest) in the book.
I found the examples parsed in the chapters rather useless, and not practical. Since, I have found several useful on-line tutorials on www.python.org, where the user is taken through the chapters in a gradual, progressive way. The examples and exercises in a beginner's book should be based on what is learned in the previous chapters, giving the reader the idea that what is learned is put in practice, thus easily assimilated.
I don't recommend this book for a complete novice, as she/he will lose interest in Python programming very easily! This book has the advantage of presenting the main and most important features of the Python programming language, but it sues a more advanced audience.
The low rating is indeed due to the non adequacy of the book for beginners and for not following the good standards of the "...for dummies" successful series.

Python Web Development with Django ReviewWe are a Python shop at work and have recently started developing in Django. So I picked this book up as a total beginner to Django, but an experienced Python programmer. I feel that the book would be more or less the same even for someone totally new to Python, because Django is definitely a different kind of beast.
Overall, this book was okay to good. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. It is definitely targeted at beginners to Django (and possibly Python). As a Django beginner, I first ran through the tutorial on the Django website, because it is very thorough and good. I definitely recommend that as a starting place regardless of which book you end up buying. Then I cracked open this book. The first chapter is a 50-page introduction to Python, so I skipped that. Chapter 2 is a tutorial in which you build a simple blog. So by the time I had finished that chapter, I had built two different Django sites but not really read anything about the language or framework or theory thereof. I think this is a good thing, and this chapter is well-placed. Chapter 3 introduces Django. It covers dynamic web sites, communication, data storage, presentation, separating the layers (MVC), general django architecture, and "core philosophies of Django". It is a decent introduction, though I read through it quickly so I could get to the next three chapters.
The next three chapters make up the Django in Depth section and are the bread-and-butter of the book. The first chapter covers models, the second URLs/HTTP/views, and the third templates and form processing. For me, these were the chapters I was most looking forward to, where I would learn everything I needed to know to get started really understanding. And they let me down a bit. Each one was good in what it covered, but the problem was that it left out quite a bit. The part on the models themselves was pretty good and covered the necessities. But the part on querying was a little sparse. They left much for the reader to go to the documentation and find out. (But what's the point of the book, then?) I did think it was nice that they mentioned fixtures, as I had trouble finding that information online when I needed to set one up for work. The chapter on views was decent, but seemed to leave out too much detail. The section covering views specifically was short. Finally, the template/forms chapter again left the reader to find out critical details in the online documentation. First, the template section was short. Second, the forms section seemed long enough, but I just found that it wasn't that helpful when I was really creating forms for work.
The next four chapters are tutorials in which you build various applications. I haven't gone through these yet, but they look pretty good. I think Django is one of those things that is best learned in a very hands-on fashion. Perhaps some of the weaknesses of the previous three chapters are made up for here; but I doubt it, and if so feel that information should have still been included in the earlier chapters. (The book is fairly slim and could definitely be expanded.) Chapter 11 covers advanced Django programming, including customizing the admin, using syndication, generating downloadable files, enhancing Django's ORM with custom managers, and extending the template system. The chapter seems decent enough, although I haven't had to do any of these things yet. Likewise, with Chapter 12 covering advanced Django deployment, I haven't had to deploy anything yet so I only know that the chapter seems to cover some useful information.Python Web Development with Django OverviewUsing the simple, robust, Python-based Django framework, you can build powerful Web solutions with remarkably few lines of code. Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming ReviewThis book will teach you Python if you have a lot of patience and are willing to wade through many pages of text to get information. The author wastes a lot of ink stating things like "I'll introduce you to topic XYZ, but you will have to wait until a later chapter to go into detail." Or introducing a topic and then declaring it is outside the books (1216 page) scope. Here's an example from page 85:
"Text pattern matching is an advanced tool outside this book's scope, but readers with backgrounds in other scripting languages may be interested to know that to do pattern matching in Python, we import a module called re."
Pattern matching is a critical feature of any scripting language. I was surprised to see such an important topic thrown away.
The book is divided into sections. I've put page counts and a summary description of the content to further describe the glacial pace of the book:
Part 1: Getting Stared: Pages 1- 72
72 pages to tell you how to run a Python program.
Part 2: Types and Operations 73-258
186 pages to introduce Python types (strings, numbers, sequences, etc)
Page 3: Statements and Syntax - 259-392
If statements are not introduced until Part3.

Mining the Social Web: Analyzing Data from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Other Social Media Sites ReviewMining the Social Web does a great job of introducing a wide variety of techniques and wealth of resources for exploring freely available social data and personal information. If you are willing to spend the time tinkering with the examples, the book is pure fun. It offers a nice compliment to Segaran's Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications. The two books overlap but where they do offer different perspectives and explanations of common techniques (e.g., TF-IDF, cosine similarity, Jaccard index). If you are well-versed in data mining the web you may find much of the discussion familiar. If you have only been casually engaged to date, your toolbox will fill quickly.
In order to work with the book's examples related to LinkedIn and Facebook you really need to have a robust collection of connections. In terms of the source code itself, most of it worked as is. I wasn't able to install the Buzz library which limited my interaction with material in chapter 7 and opted to not get involved with the LinkedIn or Facebook but found the discussions around them easy to follow. By far my favorite chapter in the book was chapter 8, "Blogs et al.: Natural Language Processing (and Beyond)..."
