Software Engineering - ESEC '93: 4th European Software Engineering Conference, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, September 13-17, 1993. Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) ReviewSommerville gives a keen view of the entire breath of this broad topic. His text is filled with easy to understand illustrations and chapter summaries. The examples are end-to-end because he provides the needed preliminaries (concepts and foundations) to understand the results. His treatment of requirements engineering and formal specification methods is quite good. In addition to the key points (of each chapter) he provides pointers to other resources on each subtopic. I find this text better for use in the classroom than the other leading text (which I use as a reference) because Sommerville's presentation provides a more logical flow and organization (i.e., its easier to read). I used the slides that are available (.ppt) from his web site to supplement my lectures.Software Engineering - ESEC '93: 4th European Software Engineering Conference, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, September 13-17, 1993. It contains 6 invitedpapers and 27 contributed papers selected from more than 135submissions.The volume has a mixtureof themes. Some, such as softwareengineering and computer supportedcollaborative work, areforward-looking and anticipate future developments; others, such as systems engineering, are more concerned with reportsof practical industrial applications. Some topics, such assoftware reuse, reflect the fact that some of the concernsfirst raised in 1969 whensoftware engineering was bornremain unsolved problems. The contributed papers are organized under the followingheadings: requirements specification, environments, systemsengineering, distributed softwareengineering, real-timesystems, software engineering and computer supportedcollaborative work, software reuse, software process, andformal aspects of software engineering.

Hacking Vim: A Cookbook to get the Most out of the Latest Vim Editor: From personalizing Vim to productivity optimizations: Recipes to make life easier for experienced Vim users ReviewI like this book. It is concise. It assumes that you are probably comfortable with Vim, but want to get more out of Vim. You can easily skip around and browse difference recipes. I also like the fact that it packs in a lot of info in a slim volume. So many authors tend to give too much detail. I like a book like this because
it gives you enough to get you started and no more.
The only downside of this book is that it's $40 for 210 pages. I think that pretty pricey even in the over-priced world of technical books. If this book were $10 I would buy copies for my friends. If this book were $20 I would buy it without reservations. If this book were $30 then I would not be complaining about the price.
But at $40 I'm tempted to say that someone who is moderately motivated could probably save their money and use :h and the vimtips.Hacking Vim: A Cookbook to get the Most out of the Latest Vim Editor: From personalizing Vim to productivity optimizations: Recipes to make life easier for experienced Vim users OverviewThis book contains hacks that cover everything from personalizing Vim according to the user's work cycle to optimizations that will boost the user's productivity. It does not cover the basic tasks of using the editor but instead focuses on making life easier for experienced Vim users. It is written for Vim 7.0 , the latest stable version. Anyone who has worked with Vim and wants to get more out of this legendary text editor can use the hacks from this book. It does not cover the basic tasks of using the editor but instead focuses on making life easier for more experienced Vim users.

Practical Mono (Expert's Voice in Open Source) ReviewAt first glance, you would think that Practical Mono is yet another
introductory book about C# and Mono, but all of that drastically
changes the moment you look at the book's table of contents and see
the variety of topics it covers and the lengths to which the author
goes to describe the more important details.
The book gently eases the into what .NET and Mono are giving a
historical background for each. What I found very interesting is the
fact the author takes time to explain about .NET in the real world,
and ties this to Mono to give the reader a clear idea of how any why
Mono was started and what the reader can do to participate in this
effort.
Since a lot of people using Mono might be coming from a traditional
.NET environment, the author expects those people to be used to
certain development tools. To that effect, the second chapter in the
book is dedicated to introducing the reader to development tools that
can be used with Mono, especially Mono Develop. This gives the reader
some heads up about what can be used instead of their conventional
development tools and makes sure you start off on solid grounds.
Having gotten the user all set up and ready for action, the book then
moves on to introduce the author to C#. This is a subtle introduction
that eases the user into what C# is and how the language works.
Chapter 3 comes in very handy when you want to brush up on your C#
skills or are new to C#. the author continues to give the reader more
information about C# in a more detailed fashion in Chapter 4,
"Learning C#: Beyond the Basics". This chapter goes into some
nitty-gritty detail about C# classes, exceptions, and all round more
advanced C# topics.
Chapter 5 moves into the more exotic areas of .NET that deal with the
CLR, IL, assemblies, and the general assembly cache (GAC). This
chapter is very helpful if the reader wishes to acquire in depth info
of how the .NET environment works. Other discussed topics here are
garbage collection, application domains, and the class library. This
is one of those chapters that make this book an excellent
recommendation for both novice and advanced users of C# and .NET.
The first 5 chapters have made sure the user is very knowledgeable
about what Mono is, what .NET is, what C# is, and how all of them
relate to each other. They have also explained C# and introduced the
reader to its syntax and advanced features. Starting with Chapter 6,
the "Practical" bit from the books title starts to kick in quite
strongly. If its a book with both theoretical and real world
information that you want, then the coming chapters are really going
to quench your thirst.
Chapter 6 goes right into the heart of on of .NET's most desired
features, Windows Forms. The author explains what Windows Forms is,
what GDI+ is, how to implement a good user interface, and gives real
world examples of how to do all of that introducing the reader to
Windows Forms' various controls. A nice section that is mentioned in
several chapters is the "Whats New in Version 2.0?" section that
informs the reader about what to expect in the new version of .NET in
regard to that particular topic.
Because the author knows that not all people will be using Windows
Forms to design their graphical interfaces, he goes into GTK+ and
Glade and takes up a complete chapter explaining what they are and how
they can be used instead of Windows Forms. Chapter 7 serves as a
gentle introduction to the GTK+ and Glade world, and makes sure the
uses knows how to pick between Windows Forms and the GTK+ / Glade
combination.
After finishing Chapter 7, the user has a very good idea about how to
design a complete graphical user interface using freely available
tools (Windows Forms in Mono, and GTK+ / Glade using GTK# in Mono).
The author now moves on to describe ADO.NET, a heavily used feature of
.NET which is also available through Mono. This chapters enlightens
the reader and explains all aspects of using ADO.NET in applications
to connect and utilize databases. The particular example is geared
towards installing MySQL. Explanation is given both for Linux and
Windows, which also shows that Mono can be used as a .NET alternative
on Windows.
Since XML is constantly referred to as a "hot topic", the author does
not let us down and dedicates a complete chapter to discussing XML and
Mono. If the reader is new to XML, then he / she will be pleased to
find out that an explanation to what XML is and its history is given
at the beginning of Chapter 9: Using XML. The chapter deals with
looking at XML documents and traversing them. The author shows us a
real world example by applying this knowledge to create an RSS feed
class library.
Chapter 10 is for those of us with enthusiasm for networking and
remoting. This chapter, "Introducing Networking and Remoting", starts
by explaining what networks are and their general concepts, then dives
into how we can do networking related programming in .NET. We apply
this knowledge later on and create an RSS feed handler.
Another heavily used feature in .NET is ASP.NET. Chapter 11: Using
ASP.NET, explains what ASP.NET is, how it works internally, and how to
use it. This chapter shows the reader how to set up a web server for
ASP.NET (both the XSP web server and an external web server) and moves
on to show the user how a web service can be written. A lot of readers
will find this chapter very useful as web services seem to be an
increasing and expanding field right now.
Finally in Chapter 12: Using Advanced Mono Techniques, the author
dives into such topics like performance tuning, reflection, and using
threads. Advanced readers will particularly like this chapter as it
handles some of the "harder" more demanding features of .NET.
This book not only serves as a great learning experience that shows
you how things are done in the real world, it also as a general good
reference for C#, .NET, and Mono and several of their features.
Definitely one you should have in your bookshelf right by your work
desk.
I enjoyed reading Mark's book, and I would recommend it to
people that are either getting into .NET / Mono or have some
experience but would like to further it.Practical Mono (Expert's Voice in Open Source) OverviewThe Mono project is an open source implementation of the groundbreaking Microsoft .NET platform, backed by Novell and supported by thousands of contributors from around the world. Practical Mono offers readers a detailed examination of Mono and its many facets, such as building GUI-based applications with Gtk#, database interaction ADO.NET, and creating powerful applications with XML and Web Services. By embracing this implementation, users are able to take advantage of the powerful development paradigm, building Internet-enabled cross-platform applications based on freely available, open source technologies. It includes a briefing on the C# language, so even novice .NET programmers stand to gain plenty from this practical guide.

Python 3 Web Development Beginner's Guide ReviewPackt Publishing asked me to review "Python 3 Web Development Beginner's Guide" ([...]). I'll have to admit, it's a bit of an odd duck. A better (albeit overly verbose) title might have been "An Introduction to Rich Internet Application Development Using jQuery UI, a Very Modern Version of Python, a Relatively Old Python Web Application Framework Named CherryPy, and an Ancient Version of HTML Written by a Guy Who Uses Windows".
The first tipoff that this book was a bit strange was that the author uses Windows and some combination of Firefox and IE. It seems like most web developers use OS X (or occasionally Linux), and they prefer Chrome over IE.
The next tipoff was the use of jQuery UI. jQuery UI is a very modern technology which is often used to build rich internet applications. RIAs really aren't the sort of thing that I would expect to see in a book for beginners. What happened to the old days when beginning web applications focused on the server dynamically generating HTML? If I took the time to count the number of lines of code, I wouldn't be surprised if this book had more JavaScript than Python.
The title of this book mentions Python 3, but if you search for "Python 3" in the book, there are extremely few mentions of it. This book really isn't about Python 3 per se (as compared to Python 2); it has a lot more to do with jQuery UI.
Whereas Python 3 and jQuery UI are very modern technologies, standing in contrast is the book's use of HTML 4 and CherryPy. HTML 4 is an *ancient* version of HTML. I would expect anyone using jQuery UI to use either XHTML or HTML5. At the very least, I would have expected one of the transitional DTDs. Similarly, he uses CherryPy. Although I agree that CherryPy is solid code, it's also fairly old. It predates any of the modern Python frameworks.
This book claims to teach web development "without having to learn another web framework" [p. 1]. That's simply not true. It makes heavy use of CherryPy. The home page for CherryPy ([...]) calls it an "HTTP framework" and says that it has "everything you would expect from a decent web framework." It's not as full-featured as, say, Django, but parts in the example code such as "@cherrypy.expose" [p. 36] are certainly framework features. In fact, "@cherrypy.expose" is part of CherryPy's object publishing system, which it uses as a replacement for regex-based URL routing.
Another thing that's a bit strange about this book is that the author doesn't use a client-side or a server-side templating language. In JavaScript, he tends to use string concatenation, which is weird because there is a templating pluging for jQuery. On the server, he embeds HTML directly in the Python code, which is pretty ugly (as he mentions on p. 229).
Furthermore, the code is extremely sloppy. The code does not follow Python's style guide concerning whitespace (PEP-8) (see for example p. 145) even though PEP-8 is extremely standard in the Python community. Nor is it even self consistent. I don't know of anyone who puts a space before the colon in expressions such as "if not isinstance(name, str) :" [p. 146]. The indentation in the JavaScript is not only non-standard and inconsistent, it's occasionally completely wrong [p. 118] (i.e. the indentation disagrees with the braces).
Aside from bad style, I'm a little concerned about various coding practices. For instance, the JavaScript at the bottom of p. 40 has variables that don't use var. This means they're effectively global. This is extremely bad practice. Fortunately, he does use var in other places in the book.
On the subject of security, there are several standard security vulnerabilities that web applications must protect against: XSS (cross-site scripting vulnerabilities), SQL injection attacks, XSRF (cross-site request forgeries), and session fixation (or session hijacking) attacks. Every book on web development should cover these.
The book mentions XSS, but I fear it's approach may not be thorough enough. It does not mention the term "SQL injection" attack, but the ORM shown in the book does look to be somewhat safe. It mentions XSRF, but says that it's out of scope. It doesn't mention "session fixation" or "session hijacking". In general, I don't think the book is good enough about "escaping things" properly. For instance, on p. 293 the author creates a URL in JavaScript using values from a form, but he doesn't take care to URL encode the parameters.
Despite all of the above, I can say this about the book. The author does a good job explaining the web to beginners. Modern web applications are fairly complicated beasts. There's the client, the web server, and the database server, and they each require their own syntaxes. The author does a decent job explaining what runs where. It can be difficult for an expert web developer, such as myself, to remember that newbies might not know all these things.
In summary, will this book help you become a competent, professional web developer? Absolutely not. Is it as well written as, say, "Agile Web Development with Rails" ([...]). No. However, might it be a good way for a beginner to dip his toes in web development with Python and jQuery UI? Maybe.
(Disclaimers: Packt gave me a free electronic copy of this book in trade for my review. I have not read the whole thing. I did read the first 50 pages and skimmed various key sections.)Python 3 Web Development Beginner's Guide OverviewPart of Packt's Beginner's Guide Series, this book follows a sample application, with lots of screenshots, to help you get to grips with the techniques as quickly as possible. Moderately experienced Python programmers who want to learn how to create fairly complex, database-driven, cross browser compatible web apps that are maintainable and look good will find this book of most use. All key technologies except for Python 3 are explained in detail.

Beginning Xcode (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewYou this will be no surprise once you read the remainder of this review, but I'm going to just say it up front: this book is great. Being a seasoned Xcode user, I can tell you that having this book back when I was first switching over to Xcode would have hugely sped the transition.
The 'Programmer to Programmer' model that Wrox is known for is a an excellent style of reference. There are many benefits of targeting an existing programmer. When writing to an existing programmer there are terms and phrases that the writer can use that programmers will immediately understand, while a newcomer might not. These words and phrases allow the author to communicate to the reader in a rapid, concise and clear way.
The author introduces Xcode by devoting a series of chapters to different sections of the Xcode experience. Each chapter does an excellent job of introducing those little features that you might otherwise miss for a year, and then wonder how you got anything done without it. The chapters are filled with examples and pictures which I believe even a non programmer using the book as their first introduction could follow. I do believe though that a programming book would be a better first book and this book a second. The reason is that even though this book does a great job with simple explanations there are references made to terms which a new programmer wouldn't understand and also a new programmer wouldn't be able to relate to the features without a context. The new programmer says, "That's a great feature, but why and where do I use it?" The existing programmer coming to Xcode says, "Thats a great feature! Kind of like the ---- feature in my old ------ IDE but much more useful for ------."
The author even rounds off the survey of Xcode by addressing the powerful debugging and profiling tools that are included in the Xcode package. One section that I was extremely pleased to find was a section on remote debugging. Remote debugging is a method where one computer is used to run an application and another computer is used to monitor and debug. Remote debugging is a useful feature in general, but I find it indispensable when working on games or other full screen applications that take control of the entire screen. I was pleased to find this section included since I had a difficult time getting it to work the first time I tried to set it up. Again, having this excellent book at my side would have saved me enough time to justify purchasing the book.
I was also pleased with the author's coverage of Shark -?the performance profiling app included in Xcode. I have had wonderful results with using Shark to determine areas of my code that are malfunctioning or just plain poorly written with respect to time efficiency. The book does a wonderful job of explaining the function of usage of all the menu's windows in the application. Another feature that I thought was very useful that fits will with the "Programmer to Programmer" method is the "How it Works" sections that give a good description of why you are doing something, what Xcode is really doing as a result and how it does it.
I think that this book is incredible. I only have one recommendation to someone who's considering purchasing it. Buy it, but also purchase a book that covers the cutting edge Apple made technologies, like Carbon, Cocoa, Foundation, Core Foundation, Core Image, Core Data, Quartz, ect. The reason for this recommendation is that Xcode is built for and integrates well with these technologies and I believe that it would be beneficial to have a book to give an in depth introduction to these technologies, while this book gives an in-depth introduction to the IDE used to develop them. I have not had a chance to examine the book, but it's quite possible that Michael Trent and Drew McCormack's "Mac OS X Programming" also by Wrox is that perfect companion book.Beginning Xcode (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewXcode is a powerful suite of free development tools from Apple Computer that will allow you to create Macintosh applications, plug-ins, web components, applets, and more using languages such as C, C++, Objective-C, Java, and AppleScript.
What you will learn from this book:
Control window layout to match your development style.
Master source file organization.
How to access a source control management system, right in the Xcode interface.
How to quickly navigate to files, symbols, bookmarks, declarations, and definitions within your project; find reference documents and instantly access API documentation.
Harness Xcode's smart editing features, such as auto-indent, code completion, and text macros.
Discover how easy it is to browse class information and create dynamic class diagrams.
Get started using Xcode's Interface Builder and Data Modeling design tools.
Learn to customize target build phases, add your own compilers, write your own build processes, and integrate Xcode with other build tools like Ant and gnumake.
How to create and integrate unit tests into your projects.
Harness the full power of the debugger with smart breakpoints and custom data formatters. Learn how to change variables, and even fix bugs, while your program is still running.
Start using Xcode's suite of performance analysis tools to find problems and accelerate your code.
Customize scores of hidden, and often undocumented, Xcode features. Learn how to remap keyboard commands, create your own project and file templates, and even add your own commands to the Xcode menus.

Instead of "cookbook" projects specific to a particular language, developer James Bucanek details each Xcode feature with step-by-step instructions that can be applied directly to your projects. Example projects that demonstrate a single concept make it easy to explore each feature.

Code Reading: The Open Source Perspective (v. 1) ReviewI purchased the book to help me out with the recurring task of quickly understanding the nature of unfamiliar large software projects. Kudos to Mr. Spinellis for tackling this subject, which is a large part of the everyday work of programming.
Unfortunately, I feel that this book was of very limited use to me as an experienced programmer, and suffers from a rather basic flaw (as a topic). The problem is that the art of code reading is really the intersection of a deep and/or broad understanding of programming, in conjunction with a deep and/or broad understanding of the tools and practices employed. One could well assert that this book is about *debugging* unfamiliar codebases as much as it is about *reading* them, since code comprehension is a component of code debugging. This is a rather apt analogy, since many have attempted to describe the black art of debugging just as Mr. Spinellis has attempted with reading, and with no definitive "must-have" coverage to date.
The result is that I felt the book rushed through important programming concepts that were either extremely basic (global variables, while loops, conditionals, blocks), or language-specific (C typedef, arrays, function pointers), or too deep for the book to address adequately (trees, stacks, queues, hashes, graphs). With regard to the latter, I found it odd to be reading a lot of text about basic data structures, when it seemed to me that I should be assumed to already have this knowledge if I wanted to read code that used it. And if I did NOT know about basic data structures, I should be reading a book about data structures rather than a book about code reading. Software patterns are also presented (though not by the name, I think). If I was to encounter a codebase that employed some programming concept I didn't understand fully (for example, red-black trees), then I would first go to a book on data structures -- not a book on code reading.
Following the sections on what I would consider mandatory prerequisite understanding are some brief chapters software engineering concepts (version control, build systems, project organization, packaging, system structures), which might be useful to a reader who had never worked on a large-scale project before.
After all of the coverage of what I would consider prerequisite knowledge, the penultimate chapter finally gets to the topic of tools and techniques for actually reading code. This chapter is in fact what I had hoped Mr. Spinellis would devote the book to. Unfortunately, most of the tools and techniques presented are very basic and quickly encountered by any programmer: regular expressions, the fact that many editors include browsing support, the grep utility, differencing tools, the idea that you could write your own tools, using the compiler to emit warnings and preprocessed code, that beautifiers exist, profiling and annotating printouts. And that's it, in about forty pages, followed by a chapter devoted to an example session.
On the whole, I think this book comes up short. If you have a few years of programming experience under your belt, then you've already encountered the basic tools and techniques presented. If someone resorted to this book to learn about a basic programming construct, then they could read my code, but I'd be nervous about letting them modify it, until they read more focused texts.
I'm rating this book at three stars because there are some good pieces here and the effort was laudable. In the end, though, I really don't think that anybody needs this book on their shelf.Code Reading: The Open Source Perspective (v. 1) OverviewThis book is a unique and essential reference that focuses upon the reading and comprehension of existing software code. While code reading is an important task faced by the vast majority of students, it has been virtually ignored as a discipline by existing references. The book fills this need with a practical presentation of all important code concepts, form, structure, and syntax that a student is likely to encounter. The concepts are supported by examples taken from real-world open source software projects. The focus upon reading code (rather than developing and implementing programs from scratch) provides for a vastly increased breadth of coverage.

Programming Python ReviewWow. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it's enormous. It took me almost a year to go through the whole thing, although I did stop and work through every single example. On the other hand, like "Learning Python", there are a lot of sidetracks that seem targeted at beginners which I felt could have easily been left out.
This book should be considered volume 2 of "Learning Python". "Learning Python" (or "volume 1") covers the core Python language in quite a bit of detail, but doesn't talk much about the library. "Programming Python", in turn, covers the Python library, but doesn't talk about the syntax of the language (you're expected to know all that already).
Even with 1500 pages, it would be impossible to do justice to the _entire_ Python library, so a useful subset is covered. The book is actually divided into seven subsections, and sections 2 (System Programming), 3 (GUI Programming), 4 (Internet Programming), and 5 (Tools and techniques) could each have legitimately been a book in their own right. Part 6 (Integration) was a bit weak compared to the others - it covered only two chapters, and was the only section of the book that included incomplete examples. Of course, Parts 1 & 7 were an introduction and an epilogue.
In terms of the Python standard library, "String Services", "File and Directory Access", "Data Persistence", "Generic Operating System Services", "Interprocess Communcation and Networking", "Internet Protocols and Support", and "Graphical User Interfaces" were covered indepth. "Internet Data Handling" and "Structured Markup Tools" were both touched on, but not really examined. Other Python-related topics such as Jython, Zope, ZODB and SWIG were discussed as well, along with examples.
The main strength of this book was its examples. I prefer to manually type each source example and run them, rather than downloading them from a web site - although it takes longer to work through the book that way, I end up retaining quite a bit more. For that reason, I'm frustrated by programming books that include incomplete examples (or at least not enough that I can reasonably fill in the blanks). Fortunately, this wasn't such a book - until the very last chapter, all of the examples were complete, although quite a few of them build on previous examples (sometimes a bit pointlessly, such as his GUIMixin "framework"). Chapter 15, for example, is pretty much nothing but a listing of a complete, working e-mail GUI client - I was actually able to use this to check my own e-mail (POP only... but still!)
Section 3 on GUI programming is the best coverage on TKinter available anywhere. This section alone is worth the price of the book, if you're ever going to touch TKinter. He doesn't cover Tix, unfortunately, but I believe that every single TKinter widget is discussed and demonstrated in example code. PMW and wxPython are mentioned, but just as in, "they exist" - this books perspective on GUI programming is TKinter only. Still, that's plenty to fill up 5 chapters.
This _is_ a good, useful, book - I got a lot more out of this than I got out of "Learning Python", but it can be a bit meandering at times - for its volume, I expected it to cover a lot more ground, although what the author does decide to cover, he covers in exquisite detail, including historical perspectives, real-world "war stories" and workable examples.Programming Python Overview
Already the industry standard for Python users, Programming Python from O'Reilly just got even better. This third edition has been updated to reflect current best practices and the abundance of changes introduced by the latest version of the language, Python 2.5.

Whether you're a novice or an advanced practitioner, you'll find this refreshed book more than lives up to its reputation. Programming Python, 3rd Edition, teaches you the right way to code. It explains Python language syntax and programming techniques in a clear and concise manner, with numerous examples that illustrate both correct usage and common idioms. By reading this comprehensive guide, you'll learn how to apply Python in real-world problem domains such as:

GUI programming
Internet scripting
Parallel processing
Database management
Networked applications

Programming Python, Third Edition covers each of these target domains gradually, beginning with in-depth discussions of core concepts and then progressing toward complete programs. Large examples do appear, but only after you've learned enough to understand their techniques and code.

Along the way, you'll also learn how to use the Python language in realistically scaled programs--concepts such as Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and code reuse are recurring side themes throughout this text. If you're interested in Python programming, then this O'Reilly classic needs to be within arm's reach. The wealth of practical advice, snippets of code, and patterns of program design can all be put into use on a daily basis--making your life easier and more productive.

Reviews of the second edition:

"...about as comprehensive as any book can be." --Dr. Dobb's Journal

"If the language had manuals, they would undoubtedly be the texts from O'Reilly...'Learning Python' and 'Programming Python' are definitive treatments." --SD Times

Professional Linux Kernel Architecture (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI picked up Mauerer's work on the bookish desire to keep my Kernel book library complete - and contrary to my hopes I was disappointed right from the introduction.
The book is 1337 pages long, which in itself is a negative and the leading reason for the low score - being clear (which the author is) should not come at the expense of being concise. All major areas of kernel architecture are covered, and the author often covers operating systems basics not found in such books, which partly explains (but hardly justifies) the bulk.
The kernel version covered in the book is 2.6.24, which is newer than that covered by Robert Love's book, which remains my recommendation regardless because of its pointedly zeroing in on the relevant bits, instead of exploring every single minutia along the way as Mauerer does here.
The book has merit for a bookworm such as myself, who will refer to it on a chapter basis, but is not the top choice for someone entering the subject anew.
For general use (i.e. where your bookshelf does not include every Linux kernel book ever published), Love's "Linux Kernel Development" (2nd ed) is a much better architectural introduction. If you miss operating system's basics, your first stop should be Tanenbaum's "Operating Systems Design and Implementation" (3rd ed) as well as his "Modern Operating Systems" (3rd ed) before you even think to start poking at the Linux kernel and get overwhelmed by the number of concepts you should have had previous familiarity with. Finally, if you are driven to the Linux kernel by device drivers, as is the most common case, Corbet, Rubini and Kroah-Hartman's "Linux Device Drivers" (3rd ed) definitely belongs on your shelf, although the very recent "Essential Linux Device Drivers" by Vekateswaran mounted the first credible threat to it in a decade, being both thorough and possibly tying Love for the spot as most enjoyable kernel book I have read to date - I would recommend a new device driver developer to go with both, possibly augmented by Love if more architectural knowledge is desired.
The bottom line is that this is a valiant effort, but that the author should have focused more. If you have the time to read thirteen-hundred pages, your time is better invested reading the titles above recommended, picking two or three depending on your exact focus in the subject - you will still be done faster than reading this one!Professional Linux Kernel Architecture (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewFind an introduction to the architecture, concepts and algorithms of the Linux kernel in Professional Linux Kernel Architecture, a guide to the kernel sources and large number of connections among subsystems. Find an introduction to the relevant structures and functions exported by the kernel to userland, understand the theoretical and conceptual aspects of the Linux kernel and Unix derivatives, and gain a deeper understanding of the kernel. Learn how to reduce the vast amount of information contained in the kernel sources and obtain the skills necessary to understand the kernel sources.

Python For Dummies ReviewI agree with some of the reviewers here, it is definitely disappointing to see a bad seed among the good "... for dummies" series. I have previous experience with programming languages, although this is not my everyday task. I got interested in Python and wanted the book to guide me through the basics. After reading the first 7-8 chapters I started asking myself whether I missed something in the previous ones, as I lost track (and interest) in the book.
I found the examples parsed in the chapters rather useless, and not practical. Since, I have found several useful on-line tutorials on www.python.org, where the user is taken through the chapters in a gradual, progressive way. The examples and exercises in a beginner's book should be based on what is learned in the previous chapters, giving the reader the idea that what is learned is put in practice, thus easily assimilated.
I don't recommend this book for a complete novice, as she/he will lose interest in Python programming very easily! This book has the advantage of presenting the main and most important features of the Python programming language, but it sues a more advanced audience.
The low rating is indeed due to the non adequacy of the book for beginners and for not following the good standards of the "...for dummies" successful series.

Bash Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Bash Users (Cookbooks (O'Reilly)) ReviewThis book covers the GNU Bourne Again Shell, which is a member of the Bourne family of shells that includes the original Bourne shell sh, the Korn shell ksh, and the Public Domain Korn Shell pdksh. This book is for anyone who uses a Unix or Linux system, as well as system administrators who may use several systems on any given day. Thus, there are solutions and useful sections for all levels of users including newcomers. This book is full of recipes for creating scripts and interacting with the shell that will allow you to greatly increase your productivity.
Chapter 1, "Beginning bash" covers what a shell is, why you should care about it, and then the basics of bash including how you get it on your system. The next five chapters are on the basics that you would need when working with any shell - standard I/O, command execution, shell variables, and shell logic and arithmetic. Next there are two chapters on "Intermediate Shell Tools". These chapters' recipes use some utilities that are not part of the shell, but which are so useful that it is hard to imagine using the shell without them, such as "sort" and "grep", for example. Chapter nine features recipes that allow you to find files by case, date, type, size, etc. Chapter 10, "Additional Features for Scripting" has much to do with code reuse, which is something you find even in scripting. Chapter 11, "Working with Dates and Times", seems like it would be very simple, but it's not. This chapter helps you get through the complexities of dealing with different formats for displaying the time and date and converting between various date formats.
Chapter 12, "End-User Tasks As Shell Scripts", shows you a few larger though not large examples of scripts. They are meant to give you useful, real world examples of actual uses of shell scripts beyond just system administration tasks. Chapter 13, "Parsing and Similar Tasks", is about tasks that will be familiar to programmers. It's not necessarily full of more advanced scripts than the other recipes in the book, but if you are not a programmer, these tasks might seem obscure or irrelevant to your use of bash. Topics covered include parsing HTML, setting up a database with MySQL, and both trimming and compressing whitespace. Chapter 14 is on dealing with the security of your shell scripts. Chapters 15 through 19 finish up the book starting with a chapter on advanced scripting that focuses on script portability. Chapter 16 is related to the previous chapter on portability and is concerned with configuring and customizing your bash environment. Chapter 17 is about miscellaneous items that didn't fit well into any other chapter. The subjects include capturing file metadata for recovery, sharing and logging sessions, and unzipping many ZIP files at once. Chapter 18 deals with shortcuts aimed at the limiting factor of many uses of bash - the typing speed of the user and shortcuts that cut down on the amount of typing necessary. The final chapter in the book, "Tips and Traps", deals with the common mistakes that bash users make.
All in all this is a very handy reference for a vast number of the tasks that you'll come across when scripting with the bash shell along with well-commented code. Highly recommended.Bash Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Bash Users (Cookbooks (O'Reilly)) Overview
The key to mastering any Unix system, especially Linux and Mac OS X, is a thorough knowledge of shell scripting. Scripting is a way to harness and customize the power of any Unix system, and it's an essential skill for any Unix users, including system administrators and professional OS X developers. But beneath this simple promise lies a treacherous ocean of variations in Unix commands and standards.

bash Cookbook teaches shell scripting the way Unix masters practice the craft. It presents a variety of recipes and tricks for all levels of shell programmers so that anyone can become a proficient user of the most common Unix shell -- the bash shell -- and cygwin or other popular Unix emulation packages. Packed full of useful scripts, along with examples that explain how to create better scripts, this new cookbook gives professionals and power users everything they need to automate routine tasks and enable them to truly manage their systems -- rather than have their systems manage them.

Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming ReviewThis book will teach you Python if you have a lot of patience and are willing to wade through many pages of text to get information. The author wastes a lot of ink stating things like "I'll introduce you to topic XYZ, but you will have to wait until a later chapter to go into detail." Or introducing a topic and then declaring it is outside the books (1216 page) scope. Here's an example from page 85:
"Text pattern matching is an advanced tool outside this book's scope, but readers with backgrounds in other scripting languages may be interested to know that to do pattern matching in Python, we import a module called re."
Pattern matching is a critical feature of any scripting language. I was surprised to see such an important topic thrown away.
The book is divided into sections. I've put page counts and a summary description of the content to further describe the glacial pace of the book:
Part 1: Getting Stared: Pages 1- 72
72 pages to tell you how to run a Python program.
Part 2: Types and Operations 73-258
186 pages to introduce Python types (strings, numbers, sequences, etc)
Page 3: Statements and Syntax - 259-392
If statements are not introduced until Part3.
At this point I gave up and started reading the online tutorial.Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming Overview

Domain-Specific Languages (Addison-Wesley Signature Series (Fowler)) ReviewThe Kindle edition seems okay to me: hyperlinks work, there's a good table of contents, and the diagrams and code samples render fine. You cannot copy and paste code from the Kindle version - by design. Style is a occasionally self-conscious and discursive, you know - the regular grey-haired guru affectation. It's long, but not exactly terse or concise. But there are some rich veins of tremendously precious material in this book. It's accessible too. I am getting a lot of value from it without a comp sci background. A bargain.Domain-Specific Languages (Addison-Wesley Signature Series (Fowler)) OverviewWhen carefully selected and used, Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) may simplify complex code, promote effective communication with customers, improve productivity, and unclog development bottlenecks. In Domain-Specific Languages, noted software development expert Martin Fowler first provides the information software professionals need to decide if and when to utilize DSLs. Then, where DSLs prove suitable, Fowler presents effective techniques for building them, and guides software engineers in choosing the right approaches for their applications.

Programming Language Pragmatics, Third Edition ReviewOver the years the Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools (2nd Edition) (also knwon as the dragon book) has become the de facto standard for introducing compilers and related topics at universities. This is very unfortunate because "Programming Language Pragmatics" is in a completely different league and should be the one used instead. It gives the student (or the self taught) a complete and through overview of parsing, grammar, automata theory and other key language constructs. What really differentiates this book from others (and most notably the (in)famous "Dragon Book") is that it does so in a easy to understand manner and with lots of well written examples.
Many people find compiler and language theory to be dark magic, and it would be wrong not to acknowledge that these subjects are considerably harder than say creating a web page in PHP or writing a small Java/C# program. But much of the confusion also stems from the long history of porly written books which all have lacked explaining key areas or assumed that the readers just know some obscure CS topics beforehand. This book does not travel down that road, it is well written, contains both simple and advanced examples and is simply a delightful read.Programming Language Pragmatics, Third Edition Overview
