Mastering SQLServer 2000 ReviewThis book suffers from the same shortcomings of most first-wave books on a new product. There are references to features and limitations of the previous version of the product and editing oversights that would mislead a reader unfamiliar with the product. I have used MSSQL 7.0 for some time and there were points in the book that were in conflict with what I knew to be true that caused me to re-read a statement a few times before I realized what the author meant to say. Unless you absolutely have to have a MSSQL 2000 book now I would wait for the next batch of books. Only with better editing could I recommend this book. In the meantime if you don't need a tutorial on SQL the Books Online that come with MSSQL 2000 will serve as a more reliable reference.
I was hoping for "Inside SQL Server 2000" and should have waited the extra month. If it proves to be as good as the 7.0 version it will be well worth the wait.Mastering SQLServer 2000 OverviewComplete. Authoritative. Practical. The only SQL Server book you need.

MySQL Admin Cookbook ReviewThis book is a great first attempt at a book that has been needed for a long time. It covers the everyday practical parts of managing a MySQL server.
I have been hungry for this book for a long time. Most books about MySQL focus on the SQL language and give you long chapters on how to form complex queries. Or, they dive deep into MySQL commands command and the use of my.cnf. I have a bookshelf full of these books. None have given me help making backups on-the-fly without interrupting customer services or preventing mysqldump from failing with error 2013. This book, "MySQL Admin Cookbook", covers everyday issues database administrators (DBA) face.
I'm calling it a "first attempt" because you'll get a taste of the practical side but the authors don't give you all the tools. It covers transferring connections settings between different machines with a network share. Good. It doesn't talk enough about the tools every MySQL DBA know, like MaatKit, openarkkit, mycheckpoint, mysqltuner and so many more.
Another example, Chapter 5 covers the common details for loading large data sets using the LOAD DATA INFILE command. Common. But it doesn't talk about how you can replace a CSV or MyIsam files directly with tools like mysql-replace-tables-live.
If you are NOT a DBA and MySQL is something you're using, I FULLY recommend this book. If you are a DBA, unless your new, you will find most of this book covers things you have already learned on your own.
This book starts like a very good HOWTO with replication in chapter one without mentioning
the monitoring tool mk-heartbeat. By chapter six it get cooking with good tips on analyzing, monitoring and configuring your MySQL and then simmers to an ending with managing users and schemas.
I look forward to Rev2 of this book when it really gets cooking.
99 GREAT recipes? No. Everyday foods is more what it is.
MySQL Admin Cookbook OverviewThis book uses the approach of a cookbook, presenting solutions to problems in the form of recipes. Each recipe provides the reader with easy step-by-step descriptions of the actions necessary to accomplish a specific task. Example values and code samples are used throughout the recipes, which makes adaptation for individual needs easy.Administrators of all skill-levels will find step-by-step instructions for practical approaches to MySQL configuration, maintenance, and optimization topics. Each recipe uses a concrete example for easy understanding. This book is for ambitious MySQL users as well as professional data center database administrators. Beginners as well as experienced administrators will profit from this cookbook and get fresh ideas to improve their MySQL environments. Detailed background information will enable them to widen their MySQL horizon. It does not cover SQL basics, how to install MySQL servers, or how to design a relational database schema. Readers are expected to have a basic understanding of the SQL language and database concepts in general.

Portable DBA: SQL Server ReviewIf there is one book that you are considering for SQL Server Administration, this is the one to buy. Covering all the major topics of administration, this book goes above and beyond other SQL Server books for several reasons. Not only does it live up to the promise of an easy to find guide for everyday tasks, it offers the ability to read up quickly on several advanced topics and gain knowledge rapidly. Taken into consideration, are the three latest versions; SQL Server 2000, 7.0 and 6.5, detailing out differences between versions where applicable. Everything is explained clearly. The authors have done an excellent job of providing a wealth of information in short and concise content. It is very refreshing to see a book that was obviously written to be as brief possible without skimping on important details...clearly no fluff here!!!! This has two benefits to the reader, 1; information is easy to find, no time is wasted reading through frivolous content, 2; the cost is lower than those 1,000 page volumes that contain less valuable information. Hopefully this is the start of a new trend in technical books.
In just a few minutes after flipping through, and reading up on backups, I realized that I'm not backing up my production data properly, and can substantially decrease data loss risk by backing up my transaction logs regularly with the data. Also, some security concepts I had a bit of difficulty fully comprehending became clear to me as well.
Reading through this book, it is obvious the authors have extensive experience with SQL Server, as this book has many insider tips that only experts would know through practice. It is also apparent that the authors worked well together as this book reads as though one person wrote it. Definitely a must buy and well worth the cost. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.Portable DBA: SQL Server OverviewThis book is the ultimate field guide for every SQL ServerDBA's laptop bag. Don't go onsite without it! Covers the most commonly used SQL Server database versions. Handy, easy-to-find information includes security, database creation and management, restoration and recovery, automating SQL Server administration, monitoring performance, tuning, and much more.

Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 ReviewI've been using Oracle SQL Developer I think since the very first initial betas. I could never stand the TOAD interface and the few bugs I encountered with SQL Developer were never bothersome enough to stop using the tool.
Over the years SQL Developer has matured very nicely and now is very stable and feature rich.
Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 by Sue Harper covers the latest release for SQL Developer - 2.1. This release brought a lot of stability to the project and also introduced the new Data Modeler from Oracle.
I've been skimming through the book for the last week or so. I honestly thought since I've been using SQL Developer for so long there would be very little new to me in the book but I've been pleasantly surprised and have picked up a lot of small tips that have helped me work smarter and more efficiently with SQL Developer.
The book covers quite a bit:
* Install, configure, customize, and manage your SQL Developer environment
* Includes the latest features to enhance productivity and simplify database development
* Covers reporting, testing, and debugging concepts
* Meet the new powerful Data Modeling tool - Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler
* Detailed code examples and screenshots for easy learning
A few useful tips I've picked up since reading the book have been:
* The ability to highlight and filter data in the grids. This is really useful when you are trying to dig through some complicated data looking for very particular information.
* Using bind variables in the worksheet.
* The code formatter - cleaning up my mess!
What else does the book cover? There are chapters devoted to PL/SQL, dubugging and tuning, extending SQL Developer, source control integration (using Subversion) and a large chapter on the Data Modeler which I'm just waiting for a new project to start to begin exploring that particular tool.
If you are just getting started using SQL Developer I'd highly recommend the book. It will get you up to speed quickly and seems useful as a quick reference. If you are an experienced SQL Developer user I still think the added section on the new Data Modeler will be quite useful.Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 OverviewCovering SQL Developer fundamentals as well more intermediate and advanced topics, this book uses in-depth explanation and detailed examples to help you get the most out of Oracle SQL Developer. The book has a modular structure, so that you can dip into any chapter that covers your current area of focus and get going. This book is for Oracle developers who want to ease their database development, and enhance their productivity using Oracle SQL Developer. You should have a programming knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL, and a general familiarity with Oracle database concepts.

Implementing Database Security and Auditing: Includes Examples for Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 UDB, Sybase ReviewThe preface clearly states that this book is a guide on implementing security and auditing for database environments Lays out who should read the book, basically administrators, auditors, security professionals, or any one involved with operational ownership of databases.
After reading the book I actually felt that there are so many vulnerabilities that effect every part of an IT shop that this book is a must read for developers, architects, and management as well. Often it is the way systems are architected and coded that bring out the vulnerabilities and allow would-be hackers in.
Ron really has hit a great balance between readability and information.
The book isnt just a text or reference book but also entertained me.Implementing Database Security and Auditing: Includes Examples for Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 UDB, Sybase Overview

OCA Oracle Database 11g Administration I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-052) ReviewThis book has a fairly decent walk through of the exam. The 'substance' is there but the proofreading is not. Many times this can be inferred - for example; on page 175 - it tells you to set the 'processes' parameter in the 'static' parameter file by using the 'scope=spfile' option.
alter system set processes=200 scope=spfile;
Okay - so far so good. Next page - we set the optimizer mode to the outdated 'rule' value. However - we want the change to work for the current session only - so we use the 'scope=spfile' value. (HUH??)
alter system set optimizer_mode=rule scope=spfile;
This is straight out of the book. It was obviously a mistake because they said the same value for scope did two different things. I looked it up the 'alter system' command on the net and found the correct scope value to affect only the current session is 'memory' - so it should actually have been:
alter system set optimizer_mode=rule scope=memory;
Makes much more sense now. The thing that kinda scares me is how many more of these little mistakes are there that are not as obvious? So I try to read this book as a 'rough in' but take it all with a grain of salt.
I don't know how many good books there are out there yet for the 11g exam - this one is OKAY. I bought this one impulsively at B&N without prior research... maybe you can find a better one.
One more thing - if you are not yet familiar with the fundamentals of a relational database (normalization, foreign keys, join types, etc.) - do NOT go off of the explanation in the beginning 'primer' chapter of this book - it is horrible and I was only able to piece it together using my prior knowledge of the same. Once it gets into the actual DBA work the writing improves.
Edit 9/10/2008 - Now that I'm further into the book I'm going to have to say; don't get this book - it's too inaccurate. Here's another example - one of their sample exam questions asks for modifiers that can be applied to a b-tree index and not a bitmap index. One of the WRONG answers was "descending". To quote: "Descending, function-based, and compound indexes can be either b*tree or bitmap.
It seemed really odd to me that you could make a bitmap index descending. So I looked it up the CREATE INDEX statement on oracle docs 11g:
ASC | DESC
(...)
Restriction on Ascending and Descending Indexes You cannot specify either of these clauses for a domain index. You cannot specify DESC for a reverse index. ****Oracle Database ignores DESC if index is bitmapped**** or if the (...)OCA Oracle Database 11g Administration I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-052) Overview

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Bible ReviewI was introduced to this huge informative book by one of my friends at work place. This is a great reference book for almost everyone starting from beginners to advanced database programmers/admins. It is very difficult to cover all aspects of SQL Server in a single book. Howver, the authr(s) have done a good job in covering almost all the features of SQL Servers. This book helps developers who want to know one and everything in SQL Server. However, certain chapers such as "Service Broker" could have been detailed out more considering that these are more advanced. I especially liked the Partitioning, LINQ, Change Data Capture. It has touched upon the Business intelligence and it could have been done better. However, as I said it is already a huge book and adding more materials would have been even more. Rather this solves the purpose to a great deal as a reference book for almost all domains DBAs and developers to jump start in SQL Server.Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Bible OverviewHarness the power of SQL Server, Microsoft's high-performance database and data analysis software package, by accesing everything you need to know in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Bible. Learn the best practices, tips, and tricks from this comprehensive tutorial and reference, which includes specific examples and sample code, with nearly every task demonstrated in both a graphical and SQL code method. Understand how to develop SQL Server databases and data connections, how to administer the SQL Server and keep databases performing optimally, and how to navigate all the new features of the 2008 release.

SQL Injection Attacks and Defense ReviewI'm giving "SQL Injection Attacks and Defenses" five stars for a few reasons.
First, the book is extremely comprehensive, covering everything from basic "What is SQL Injection?" information to advanced exploit development and static analysis tools (including open source tools).
Second, this book was obviously written very recently. The content is fresh and cutting-edge.
Finally, the book is advanced. Though the reader doesn't necessarily need to know much about SQL Injection in order to start reading it, the book covers as much as anyone would need to know about the subject.
SQL Injection Attacks and Defenses is a well written, comprehensive book that can be extremely useful to security professionals, developers, and database administrators interested in writing or maintaining secure code. It could easily be called the "bible" of SQL Injection.SQL Injection Attacks and Defense Overview
Winner of the Best Book Bejtlich Read in 2009 award!

"SQL injection is probably the number one problem for any server-side application, and this book is unequaled in its coverage." Richard Bejtlich, http://taosecurity.blogspot.com/

SQL injection represents one of the most dangerous and well-known, yet misunderstood, security vulnerabilities on the Internet, largely because there is no central repository of information to turn to for help. This is the only book devoted exclusively to this long-established but recently growing threat. It includes all the currently known information about these attacks and significant insight from its contributing team of SQL injection experts.

Expert PL/SQL Practices: for Oracle Developers and DBAs ReviewI was a little bit puzzled when I got this book: who is the author? There are 15 of them! After reading it, I now believe it is a very good idea to combine knowledge from multiple experts into a single book, especially for a technical book. I would like to see more of these kinds of books coming.
The writers of this book are all very active in the Oracle community, most are authors, Oracle ACE, members of the OakTable network, etc. I actually met a few of them at seminars and user group activities. One of them, Arup Nanda, was once my RAC class instructor, and I've always been impressed by his ability to explain complicated issues in a simple and interesting way. In this book, he discussed dependencies and invalidations with the same clear logic.
The book has 15 chapters, with each author contributing one. Every chapter has a brief summary. Almost all of them go deeply into the topic using very good sample codes, traces, and tkprof output to prove their points.
You may read it as a book focusing on the newest and most powerful PL/SQL features, or you can treat it as 15 top level technical articles - each concentrates on a specific PL/SQL field and digs deeply into it. You'll learn the best practices from their expertise; real experiences and lessons. You can also gain lots of TTTs: Tips, Tricks and Traps to avoid. Many new data dictionary views mentioned by the authors are also very useful.
Based on the needs of my current work, I went through some chapters in close detail, and browsed others for future reference. The book touches the most recent Oracle version, including many new features of 11gR2.
This book is not for beginners. You will need some PL/SQL background to start with. I've been working with PL/SQL since version 6, but in the past few years, I've used more SQL than PL/SQL. By reading this book, I've realized how much more powerful PL/SQL is now than in the past. As new features come, we will have to keep learning. Often difficult tasks can become much easier if you learn the new ways rather than stick with what's familiar.
The order of the chapters does not matter. You can pick up any topic and start reading. Some similar issues are addressed by multiple authors, with each expert offering a different perspective on the problem.
I'd group the chapters into 3 main topics:
PART 1: What To Do And What Not To Do (Chapters 1, 2, 9,10, 12)
These chapters discuss when and when not to use PL/SQL from functional and performance points of view. They also discuss the differences between SQL and PL/SQL engines, the dynamic PL/SQL programming and its pros and cons, the different types of cursors and their usage, etc. Data modeling is not only important at the design stage but is also an evolutionary process.
PART 2: How To Do It Right (Chapters 5,7,8.11,14)
These chapters discuss coding standards and conventions, unit testing, best practices, etc. These are critical factors for successful application development, especially when you have a large group of developers working on a very complex application. Like Chapter 7 says, good developers need to `know your code' and to make your code simple, well organized, well documented, effective and efficient.

PART 3: How to Do More and Better (chapters 3, 4, 6, 13,15)
These chapters discuss more specific topics, including parallel processing, conditional compilations, bulk operations, methods to identify and measure performance issues as well as methods to shorten dependency chains and reducing cascading invalidations.
Chapter 6 is one of my favorate topics. Bulk operation is a very useful but underused feature. This chapter demonstrates the huge performance benefit you can get using bulk processing. The author also provides methods and solutions to find and handle the pitfalls of using bulk processing. The examples are interesting and the results are persuasive.
My coworker saw this book and agreed it is very good. I strongly recommend it to Oracle developers and DBAs.
I received a hard copy of this book. To me the line spacing is rather small for text, but the sample codes look fine.

Expert Oracle Exadata ReviewThis is a fantastic technical tome on all things Exadata. Outstanding coverage includes intro of the technology, hardware configurations, administration tasks, performance monitoring and diagnostics, wait events, backup & recovery, and application SQL tuning. Quite easily one of the two best books I've ever read regarding any Oracle technology (The other being Guy Harrison's Oracle Performance Survival Guide). I've met some of the book's authors over the years at various Oracle events (e.g. Hotsos) and thus knew these guys were top notch. But this book still totally blew me away even expecting it to be great knowing who it was coming from. I've been doing Oracle databases for over 20 years, written nine book myself, taught for Oracle Education, and worked extensively with all things Oracle. In fact I'm an Oracle ACE. So I know a good book when I see one - and this book is tops. You will not be disappointed - worth every penny.Expert Oracle Exadata Overview
Throughout history, advances in technology have come in spurts. A single great idea can often spur rapid change as the idea takes hold and is propagated, often in totally unexpected directions. Exadata embodies such a change in how we think about and manage relational databases. The key change lies in the concept of offloading SQL processing to the storage layer. That concept is a huge win, and its implementation in the form of Exadata is truly a game changer. Expert Oracle Exadata will give you a look under the covers at how the combination of hardware and software that comprise Exadata actually work. Authors Kerry Osborne, Randy Johnson, and Tanel Põder share their real-world experience, gained through multiple Exadata implementations with the goal of opening up the internals of the Exadata platform. This book is intended for readers who want to understand what makes the platform tick and for whom-"how" it does what it is does is as important as what it does. By being exposed to the features that are unique to Exadata, you will gain an understanding of the mechanics that will allow you to fully benefitfrom the advantages that the platform provides.
Will changes the wayyou think about managing SQL performance and processing
Provides a roadmap to laying out the Exadata platform to best support your existing systems
Dives deeply into the internals, removing the "black box” mystique and showing how Exadata actually works

What you'll learn
