A very detailed one. It covers all areas needed to learn for ISTQB exams (Test Analyst, Technical Test Analyst, Test Manager).
It is very well-structured and organized. The author made a great effort to make it concise yet very comprehensive.
The book is organized not only to cover all aspects of ISTQB Advanced and sometimes even more.
The book has a lot of valuable examples, especially in Chapter 4 and 5.
Drawings, tables and charts are excellent. The sentences are very clear.
It covers a lot more than other books for ISTQB exams.
In my opinion this is the most valuable book that will help you prepare for the ISTQB Advanced exams although beginners could find it helpful as well. The contents:

Test-Driven Development: A Practical Guide ReviewThis book is about Test-Driven Development (TDD). Its purpose is to help you write better code (by having more tests) and give you a head start with existing tools to achieve this.
The book falls short of these goals: The explanations about writing tests are short on advice and are sometimes misleading. The presentation of the tools is long, with little useful facts.
The book is organized into four parts: Background on TDD, refactoring and programming by intention; A look at JUnit and related tools used to write and run tests; A lengthy example of TDD; An overview of other tools in the xUnit family. The book is targeted at a Java audience but programmers using other languages should have little difficulties understanding the code.
I have a major problem with the background section. The author repeatedly claims that TDD provides exhaustive test coverage and ensures that you can refactor your code with confidence. Any error will be caught by the tests. This is foolish. First, tests rarely reach 100% code coverage. Even the sample that the author provides in the book ends up with less than 90% coverage. This leaves many gaps where tests will fail to detect errors. Even if tests cover 100% branches in the code tests are not exhaustive. Depending on the data used, the same branch may exhibit different behavior. (Not to speak about race conditions and other sources of hard to find bugs.) I fully agree with the author that writing unit tests will improve the quality of the code and help find bugs. But claiming that this is a silver bullet is not wise. I would recommend reading books about tests (e.g., Myers' The Art of Software Testing and McConnell's Code Complete chapter on unit testing) in addition to this book. The section on refactoring is a summary of Martin Fowler's Refactoring book which I recommend.
The second part presents JUnit. JUnit is a framework used to write and run tests. It is a good presentation. However I would have liked to get pieces of advices on what tests to write in addition to how to write them. The author briefly mentions boundary testing but does not have much to say about the tests themselves. Again a test book is invaluable for this. The author recommends using a test coverage tool as well as Jester to measure the tests coverage. This is a great idea.
The third section is an (overly) extended example: the author walks us through writing TDD code. This could have been a great part, giving meaning to the `practical' adjective in the book title. Unfortunately it is a long rambling, showing lots of code but short on insights. The actual `meat' of this part could be summarized in less than five pages.
The last section presents variations on the JUnit tool. Many languages (C++, C#, VB, Python, etc) are discussed. This part would have been better put on a website rather than printed in the book. Given the changes in some of these frameworks the information is obsolete.
The books ends with several appendices dealing with extreme programming and agile modeling.
Unit tests are a great tool to improve code quality. Whether or not you actively practice TDD, a good book on it can provide insights into improving your code. This book contains some interesting bits of wisdom. However much of it is buried by the rest of the material.Test-Driven Development: A Practical Guide OverviewTest-Driven Development: A Practical Guide presents TDD from the perspective of the working programmer:real projects, real challenges, real solutions, ...real code. Dave Astels explains TDD through a start-to-finish project written in Java and using JUnit. He introduces powerful TDD tools and techniques; shows how to utilize refactoring, mock objects, and "programming by intention"; even introduces TDD frameworks for C++, C#/.NET, Python, VB6, Ruby, and Smalltalk. Invaluable for anyone who wants to write better code... and have more fun doing it!

Beautiful Testing: Leading Professionals Reveal How They Improve Software (Theory in Practice) ReviewThis is a great book for testers, leads, and managers to read to get a better picture of where your testing process can bring value to your work. A few sections of this book didn't get me much value, but the vast majority of the book left me frantically scratching notes and folding corners of pages over. I read the book over a weekend and came away with a large number of major additions to my QA roadmap I use at work.
Kamran Khan's chapter on fuzz testing reinforced my ideas that choking your system with invalid parameters and input data is a tremendous way to shore up that system's stability. I also really enjoyed Lisa Crispin's and Alan Page's separate chapters, both of which emphasized value-driven, sensible approaches to test automation.
If you want an amazing story around how testing can directly impact the lives of those around you, read Karen Johnson's chapter "Software in Use." Johnson ties a visit to an Intensive Care Unit to work she'd done on equipment in that ICU - it's rare anyone sees that practical a link to work we do in this industry.
Other highly worthwhile chapters include the piece on Python's development process, the overview on TDD, Mozilla's regression testing philosophy, and others. The Python chapter, in particular, is a tremendous testament to how a rigorous testing philosophy can guarantee very solid releases even with a broad, distributed team of varying skills.
As my examples above point out, there's a great amount of broad-stroke value in the book; however, a wealth of smaller, critical points abound in various chapters as well. Some weren't phrased exactly like this, but I've taken away these other concept as well:
* Track the source of your bugs (test plans, exploratory, developer, etc.) and pay special attention to bugs found by customers. These "escapees" point to areas to shore up in your test plan.
* Mindmaps are a great way to brainstorm out your test plan or test areas.
* Use small tools like fuzzers to help create your baseline input data.
* 100% passing rates for your automated tests isn't reasonable. Investigating 100% of your failing tests to determine whether the specific failure matters is reasonable. (I already firmly believed this, but it was nice to see in print!)
* Using image comparison to check formatting.
This is one of the better books I've read this year, and it's absolutely worth adding to your shelf.

xUnit Test Patterns: Refactoring Test Code ReviewLet me start by stating the obvious: this is a patterns book about the organisation of tests and the workings of the xUnit family of unit testing frameworks. It is _not_ a book about Test Driven Development, although there is material that is pertinent to that. Given that the use of JUnit and TDD is pretty intertwined in the minds of many Java developers, it's worth making this distinction, so you know what sort of book you're getting. Speaking of JUnit, most of the code examples uses Java, although there are some examples in C#, VB and Ruby.
Like Martin Fowler's Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture, the book is split into two main sections, a narrative that weaves together a lot of the patterns and strategies, and then a catalogue of individual patterns. Between the two, there is a catalogue of 'test smells', similar to the 'code smells' discussed by Fowler in Refactoring, which I would suggest can be read profitably with the narrative section, rather than used as reference material.
There are a lot of patterns here on the mechanics of xUnit, such as 'Test Runner', 'Garbage-Collected Teardown' and 'Named Test Suite'. I was a bit confused about who this material is aimed at -- maybe someone looking at porting xUnit to a new programming language would find it useful, but a lot of it is fairly obvious to anyone who's used an xUnit in a non-trivial fashion (and certainly, if you haven't done so, this book is not a format that makes for a good introduction), or requires playing against xUnit's strengths (e.g. not putting setup and teardown code in their eponymous methods), although there is good reason for doing so in some of the examples provided, such as databases.
Beyond this, there is some good stuff on design-for-testability patterns (e.g. dependency injection versus dependency lookup), value patterns to replace magic constants, custom assertions and custom creation and other utility methods to make the intent of tests more clear. This material, along with the test smells chapter, is where the real value of the book lies. It encourages the application of the same software engineering principles you would apply to your applications (encapsulation, intent-revealing names, Don't Repeat Yourself) as you would to your testing code, something that's surprisingly easy to overlook, at least in my experience.
Also, the material on 'Test Doubles' (mocks, stubs, dummies and their ilk) is extremely useful. It touches on designing with mocks only superficially, but it does provide a helpful taxonomy of what different classes of doubles do. Now, if only everyone would standardise on this nomenclature, it would make life a lot easier. I suggest we brandish this enormous book threateningly at anyone who refuses to toe the line, and that should do the trick.
Because, boy, this book is big (about 900 pages). To be honest, it's too big. I rarely complain about getting too much book for my money, but the likes of GoF, PoEAA and PoSA 1 manage to come in between 400-500ish pages, so there's no reason XTP couldn't. The advantage is that the patterns in the catalogue, which take up most of the space, stand alone, without requiring too much flicking backwards and forwards between patterns.
The disadvantage is that there is a lot of repetition, so unlike the three design patterns books I mentioned above, which I suspect most people read cover to cover (or maybe that was just me and I'm a complete freak), I would suggest only dipping into the catalogue as necessary. For instance, how much difference is there between the 'Testcase Class per Class', 'Testcase Class per Feature' and the 'Testcase Class per Fixture' patterns? Not a lot, as you might expect.
I definitely liked this book. I would have liked it even more if it came in at about half its size and I would have preferred more emphasis on test and assertion organisation than the mechanics of the xUnit framework, but maybe that would have been a different type of book to the one Gerard Meszaros intended. This is nonetheless a must buy for anyone who cares about unit testing.xUnit Test Patterns: Refactoring Test Code OverviewAutomated testing is a cornerstone of agiledevelopment. The Art of Application Performance Testing: Help for Programmers and Quality Assurance ReviewThis well-written primer provides just enough information to help one get started with automated performance testing. It outlines several recommended practices to automating performance testing (e.g., user activity recording, deploying software monitors, etc) and describes how some of them were put to use in two case studies and how they helped in root cause analyses. It discusses desirable capabilities to look for in performance testing tools and only briefly mentions special considerations for technologically complex applications such as those that use AJAX, SAP, or Citrix, for example. A more in-depth discussion of those considerations and how to address them would have been really useful. Although information on select tool vendors and the type of tool offerings they provide is included, there is no additional description of any of the tools' capabilities or qualities (for this, the reader has to visit the provided vendor's website). Using Test-Driven Development from the very first chapter, the book explains practical TDD such as using in-memory databases. There are clear examples of stubs and mocks. Caring so much about TDD, this book also teaches how to write proper Object-oriented Code, utilizing proven best practices and design patterns.
As if that weren't enough, this book also covers PHP frameworks but by no means relies on them. Just glancing at the table of contents was enough for me to buy this book--as there weren't yet any reviews written for it on Amazon.
After reading the first chapter alone--where the authors quote "Uncle Bob's" Clean Code book--I had a good feeling that I was reading something that would finally help PHP developers write truly good code.

The Art of Unit Testing: With Examples in .Net ReviewThis book covers unit testing in .NET from a pragmatic, yet thourough and passionate, perspective. In brief, it covers many important dimensions of unit testing from simple "hello world" tests over the use of Stubs and Mocks to how you write maintainable test code. It also covers organizational topics such as how you introduce unit testing in an organization and how to do code reviews of tests.
Although unit testing has become somewhat synonymous with Agile practices, such as Test-Driven Development (TDD), the book never assumes that you will be using TDD. It is valuable wether you write your tests before or after your code.
Roy Osherove clearly has a lot of experience with unit testing, and he willingly shares so we can learn from his mistakes and successes. As a long-term practitioner of TDD myself, I can vouch for most of the advice imparted by this book: It is based on established patterns and best practices that the unit testing community have arrived at through years of experimentation.
Being the anal-retentive perfectionist that I am, I would have liked to see the book adopt the Pattern Language of xUnit Test Patterns: Refactoring Test Code (Addison-Wesley Signature Series), but at least the guidance of those two books are very much in harmony, even if the terminology differs.
In summary, you can say that this book is a very readable and useful introduction to unit testing. If you are a beginner to intermediate unit test developer, you should definitely read this book - and then, as you become more advanced, you should still read xUnit Test Patterns :)The Art of Unit Testing: With Examples in .Net Overview

Inside the Microsoft Build Engine: Using MSBuild and Team Foundation Build ReviewI've been working with MSBuild now for about a year and have learnt it solely from other people feeding me strips of information here and there. Recently I have been working on an enterprise project that requires the utmost attention concerning automated builds.
I searched for anything on MSBuild and came across this gem. Even though I have decent experience in MSBuild I read this book from front to back twice over and was exceptionally impressed with how this book was put together. The examples were very straight forward and understandable even to a few of my friends who have no idea about MSBuild. I feel that so long as the reader has an understanding of XML, then they can understand the examples in this book. The chapter 1 quick starts are greating for getting straight into the basics and getting a great feel for the direction the books takes you in.There is some fantastic advice and guidance for customizing MSBuilds, batch building and incremental building and there are 3 chapters dedicated to Team Foundation Build which were highly educational for me in not only a gathering a better understanding of the build process in Team Foundation but also a stronger understanding of how to utilize Build Agents, retention policies, triggers, and unit testing within Team Foundation Build.
This book quite simply in my humble opinion, is a "must have" for anybody that is serious in learning the art of build mastering and is a "must have" for build masters as an A+ reference.
