Apache Tomcat Bible ReviewIt is always a wonderful thing to find an excellent technical reference that is also highly *readable* - the enthusiasm of the authors for the subject is obvious to the reader and their pragmatic approach most welcome.
Regardless of if you are an experienced developer or beginner, I believe you will find a wealth of information in this book to justify the purchase. (I found the sections on how tomcat manages classloading and security of particular interest).
I believe that if your primary development and deployment platform is tomcat then this book will be of great use. Although this book is somewhat Windows centric, those of us who use real operating systems (i.e. Unix based derivatives) will still find real value from this book.

- Practical.
- High example density.
- Broad coverage of a lot of practical F# topics.
- Good depth on all the important practical stuff.
- I felt like I learned a lot, not only about F#, but about some cool C# features too.
- I felt like I'd be a lot more productive as a programmer if I could master the language.
The (not so) Bad
- Structurally, I initially got lost with some of the more complex examples. And it was straining to page back and forth re-reading things until I grasped the concepts. The density of information in the text sometimes makes it less valuable as a teaching aid and more valuable as a reference.
The (not so) Ugly
- I could not get one of the async examples to actually compile. I had to search the web for some hints to add declarations that seem to have been omitted from either the example code or F# implementation itself. In short, the example code, my development environment, F# itself, of some combination thereof was missing what appears to be an extension method for WebRequest.GetResponseAsync. JUnit in Action, Second Edition ReviewWhen I first started to read JUnit in Action, I was hoping that it wouldn't be a tutorial on the open source tool JUnit. I am glad to say that it is much more. I think the book's name could really be "Testing in Practice". Sure, JUnit is covered in a lot of detail, but so are other tools such as:
- Integration with: Ant, Maven, and Eclipse
- Mock Objects (via both EasyMock and DynaMock)
- Cactus for testing in a container
- And other small helper tools (nice ant tasks, etc.)
What made me really enjoy this book is the way it is written, coupled with the practical look at the many technologies involved in testing. It is a fresh read, that doesn't get bogged down. The book flows really well, giving you best practices throughout. They don't just say "Do X", they actually show you where these best practices come from as they refactor their own code. You are really aware that these authors know their stuff, and are drawing from a lot of experience (compared to the online FAQs).

VMware vSphere Design ReviewFirst, to be honest, I specifically bought and read this book right before my vcap4-dcd test. I was a little fuzzy in a few areas, and it gave me the detailed technical information I needed.
Overall great summaries and details of most areas impacting your vsphere infrastructure design decisions, from a third-party point of view you won't get from the vendor docs and reference designs. I will be referencing this book often for my own design decisions and for better understanding of ones made in existing and reference designs.
Very helpful for anyone who wishes to improve their vsphere design skill and technical knowledge.

Pro Puppet Review
Just finished reading Pro Puppet and I'm pretty impressed. If I were to summarize in a few short words I'd say this book could have easily been titled "Pro Deployments" as it really covers a whole host of tools that support Puppet and configuration management in general.
I am fairly new to puppet though I have a strong conceptual understanding of configuration management in general. Although puppet may be thought of as a tool to be used for very large environments, it can also be used to good advantage at smaller sites just for the versioning of your configs, and better testing.
For a quick summary of topics I found well covered here's a bullet point list:
o installing puppet, master & agent
o configuring your firewall appropriately
o managing your certificates for puppet
o applying a basic config as proof of concept
o digging in deeper with Puppet's declarative DSL
o using version control (git) with puppet - a big win for any environment
o brief mention of bootstrapping and provisioning - kickstart & preseed
o modules, classes, functions and templates
o building and managing your basic dev, test and production environments
o using a pre-commit hook with your version control system
o scaling puppet with apache & passenger
o adding a load balancer and clustering
o horizontal scaling puppet ca & masters
o external node classifications - allowing a more scalable solution for manifests & configs
o using LDAP for node information
Hitting chapter six really starts digging into some meaty topics including:
o virtualizing your configurations - applying conditionally or "realizing" to certain nodes
o enable queueing for more scalable puppet requests
o in-depth examples to manage ssh keys, nagios configs & load balancers with dynamic node configuration - awesome!
o using sqlite or mysql to store your puppet configs
o using web consoles such as dashboard and foreman
o creating puppet modules (like RPM packages)
o installing existing puppet modules (packages) from the puppet forge
o alternate DSL for puppet with Ruby DSL
o testing your configs without alternate test network - cucumber
o command line & dashboard reporting
o extending the facter database with custom environment variables
After all this material you might be stuck on the idea that Puppet does not operate in real-time. By default it is configured to refresh configs and services on your servers every thirty minutes. Of course you can do so manually, or adjust this parameter, but you may require real-time usage.
Enter Marionette Collective, an imaginative name for an add-on which extends Puppet to provide this more robust functionality.
Pro Puppet certainly introduces a wide range of real-world use-cases to the reader, which make the book very valuable. Using with version control, to manage dev, test and production, and scaling to handle large number of hosts are all key topics. What's more the method of automatically configuring nodes in your load balancer, nagios, or cacti reporting, is just a really great use of this technology.
What I found surprisingly missing though was any mention of using Puppet for provisioning or more specifically cloud deployments. This is I think a topic that everyone is talking about and one that few books are covering. An opportunity perhaps! Along with that, I would have liked to see a comprehensive discussion of different configuration management systems, such as cfengine, and chef, and why Puppet is the best and/or what the pros and cons of each are.
Despite those reservations, the book was excellent. If you've already decided to use puppet in your environment this is a very good volume to get you up to speed!

I agree with everything that Garret Kramer writes about in this book. Stillpower is a book that will help me produce better results at work. It will also help me to enjoy my job more. I help peopale with developmental disabilities find jobs. Stillpower is the concept that clarity of mind and acting freely will lead to improved performance at any endeavor. One of the things I learned from reading this book is the difference between willpower and stillpower. Willpower involves forced strained effort.Stillpower involves a more freer effort and greater results. Another important concept I learned in this book is external forces will not make increase my level of happiness. I truly believe in developing my inner wisdom to solve problems. I will try to teach my clients to trust their inner wisdom in making decisions. Kramer provides examples of athletes and sports teams who use stillpower to be succesful at what they do. Kramer shares advice that is logical and easy to understand. The best advice in this book is how to make decsions. Decisions are a result of a high state of consciousness and well being. Poor decisions are made because low sense of well being and a state of mind. Kramer also encourages me to enjoy the journey of whatever I am doing and not be overly concerned about the destination. I loved reading about the life of Michigan football player Donnie Warner and baseball legend Jackie Robinson. They are athletes who succeeded. They had successful athletic careers despite physical and societal conditions like racial prejudice. I loved reading about the success of the University of Connecticut women's basketball team in this book too. These individual stories are very inspirational. Inside the Microsoft Build Engine: Using MSBuild and Team Foundation Build ReviewI've been working with MSBuild now for about a year and have learnt it solely from other people feeding me strips of information here and there. Recently I have been working on an enterprise project that requires the utmost attention concerning automated builds.
I searched for anything on MSBuild and came across this gem. Even though I have decent experience in MSBuild I read this book from front to back twice over and was exceptionally impressed with how this book was put together. The examples were very straight forward and understandable even to a few of my friends who have no idea about MSBuild. I feel that so long as the reader has an understanding of XML, then they can understand the examples in this book. The chapter 1 quick starts are greating for getting straight into the basics and getting a great feel for the direction the books takes you in.There is some fantastic advice and guidance for customizing MSBuilds, batch building and incremental building and there are 3 chapters dedicated to Team Foundation Build which were highly educational for me in not only a gathering a better understanding of the build process in Team Foundation but also a stronger understanding of how to utilize Build Agents, retention policies, triggers, and unit testing within Team Foundation Build.
This book quite simply in my humble opinion, is a "must have" for anybody that is serious in learning the art of build mastering and is a "must have" for build masters as an A+ reference.
