Essential SharePoint 2007 ReviewBeing a SharePoint architect, I always get asked by clients and end users for resources/books to learn SharePoint functionality. The users don't want to know the gritty programming details, but want to know the functionality at a high level so that they can use the portal to its potential. I have always had a tough time recommending to clients a good book....but now with this book, I feel comfortable as well as confident that clients would feel at home reading this book.
The book talks about what collaboration is and how to implement a successful portal. From an end-user perspective it goes through all the out of the box functionality which is available and which can be implemented without writing a single line of code. The search functionality of MOSS has been very well explained. End users can very easily implement out-of-the-box workflows. The publishing features are very clearly explained.
Overall, I am very pleased with the book. Bear in mind the audience for this book is not a developer. Its mainly for the business/end-user community.

Designing Forms for Microsoft Office InfoPath and Forms Services 2007 ReviewAs XML has become the industry standard, Microsoft has increasingly oriented its Office suite to use it. The latest result is this enhanced InfoPath, in its 2007 incarnation. The book is divided into two parts. Each targeting a different audience.
The first part is aimed at a general purpose Office user, who is not assumed to be a programmer. It addresses what is a problem plaguing XML. If you want to make a new XML schema to use as a template for future data instances, you often have to write the explicit XML tags. Unfortunately, the syntax can be overwhelming to many. Plus, explicitly writing the tags is extremely error prone. What InfoPath has done is make an easy to use graphical front end. Far friendlier to the user. This user interface then can generate a schema in a robust fashion. Even people capable of editing schemas directly might still want to use what Microsoft has provided.
Along these lines, chapter 5 is a good example. While not perhaps directly concerning schema, it tackles the problem of validating what the user types into a form. It follows the approach that you should clean up your data as early as possible. Preferably before it even gets into the database. The UI lets you impose constraints on the user input into various fields of your form, by offering dialog windows with many options.
All commendably straightforward.
The second section of the text is mostly for programmers, who have already written code for Office.Designing Forms for Microsoft Office InfoPath and Forms Services 2007 Overview"Microsoft Office InfoPath represents arevolutionary leap in XML technologies and a new paradigm for gatheringbusiness-critical information. I am delighted that Scott Roberts andHagen Green, two distinguished members of the InfoPath product team, decided to share their experience in this book."

Essential SharePoint 2007: A Practical Guide for Users, Administrators and Developers ReviewI bought this book looking for answers beyond the basic user level and failed to find any. The book is good at giving overviews of features in SharePoint 2007 and the pictures are a plus. However, this book does not go into enought detail on topics a SharePoint site administrator should really know. For example, I can NOT find anything here on how to utilize the Gannt view list for projects. There is also no information on how to create and utilize KPI (Key Performance Indicator) list templates! The book only glosses over the definition and does not go into further detail. At the sametime, it goes into detail about including images and flash animations by adding HTML codes; something meant for very advanced users. There is no user level consistency in this book which is truly disappointing. I have found more answers by experimenting on SharePoint myself than through this book. Don't waste your money here.Essential SharePoint 2007: A Practical Guide for Users, Administrators and Developers Overview
If you're considering the vastly improved 2007 version of SharePoint, this concise, practical and friendly guide will teach you how to get the most from the latest version of Microsoft's information-sharing and collaboration platform. Essential SharePoint 2007 demonstrates how your business can use SharePoint to control documents, structure workflow, and share information over the Web using standard tools business users already know -- Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer. Written in a conversational tone by internationally recognized SharePoint consultant and trainer Jeff Webb, this book helps SharePoint administrators, site owners, and power users quickly gain the skills necessary to perform a wide variety of tasks for intranet and extranet web sites, and explains what's new in SharePoint 2007 for experienced SharePoint 2003 administrators. Essential SharePoint 2007 teaches you how to:

Use SharePoint 2007 with Outlook, Word and Excel, and as a document management tool, replacing, for example, shared network drives with libraries
Build and customize sites, lists, libraries and web parts for intranets and extranets
Use SharePoint 2007 for team communication through blogs, wikis, surveys, and RSS and email alerts
Build a SharePoint workflow application
Create and program web parts in order to deliver custom services and data to a site
Deploy and administer SharePoint 2007
Each chapter ends with a summary of best practices advocated by the author, and the first few chapters of the book are ideal as training materials for end users. Later chapters give developers and administrators tools not only to keep company sites running smoothly, but also to customize and extend them. The book also contains several appendices with a glossary of terms and hard-to-find information. Essential SharePoint 2007 is a one-stop task-oriented guide for learning what's necessary to make this tool a vital part of team productivity.

Professional SharePoint 2007 Development (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewMost of the SharePoint books out there focus on the basic features of WSS, including lists, document libraries, views, blogs, wikis, etc. Although these are integral parts of SharePoint, they don't begin to scratch the surface of what it has to offer.
This book begins to cover these details. Topics such as building a true development/production environment, designing an enterprise portal application, creating custom field types (not just creating custom columns), creating web parts, building custom features and solutions, and programming through the object model are important to SharePoint developers creating SharePoint content in Visual Studio.
This book also takes great aim as documenting that which hasn't been documented yet, especially the XML schemas of features, elements, and solutions.
Finally, the book focuses on the enterprise portal features of MOSS, including Excel services, the Business Data Catalog, Enterprise Search, and Document Management.
Because this book focuses heavily on development, Content Managers will be better off choosing another book from the many out there for creating lists, customizing master pages, creating style sheets, and other content topics.
But for SharePoint portal architects and development programmers, this is your book. There's a wealth of information in this book and deserves to be in your library.Professional SharePoint 2007 Development (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewIf you're a .NET or Microsoft Office developer, this book will give you the tools and the techniques you need to build great solutions for the SharePoint platform. It offers practical insights that will help you take advantage of this powerful new integrated suite of server-based collaboration software tools along with specific examples that show you how to implement your own custom solutions. You'll then be able to apply this information to create collaborative web-based applications that enhance user productivity and deliver rich user experiences.
You'll start by building a strong foundation based on a thorough understanding of the technologies that come with the SharePoint platform, while also drilling into specific implementation areas. Next, you'll dive into seven key SharePoint development areas: the base collaboration platform, portal and composite application frameworks, enterprise search, ECM, business process automation and workflow, electronic forms, and business intelligence.
This book is for ASP.NET developers who want to add collaboration support to their existing applications, Windows/Office client developers who want to move their solutions from the desktop to the web, and experienced SharePoint version 2.0 developers who want to take advantage of the new capabilities available in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
You will learn all about Windows SharePoint Services and MOSS 2007, including the following:

Ways to enhance collaboration using calendars, tasks, issues, and email alerts

Techniques for developing applications with integrated RSS, blogs and Wikis

How to build, configure, and manage portal solutions

Strategies for using enterprise search, XML, and XSLT

Methods for improving enterprise content management and business intelligence

Ways to take advantage of built-in support for regulatory compliance and web publishing

How to create custom workflows and integrate them into your solutions

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices ReviewWhen deploying SharePoint, it is critical to plan for not only what you need now, but for how it will grow and scale down the road, especially when Document Management is involved. If you don't plan adequately for searchability, scalability, or disaster recovery, you can easily run into problems.
One criticism I have had of many SharePoint books is that they are written from a technical perspective and explain how to install and configure SharePoint, but they gloss over the critical planning stages or the best practices for scalability.
As the name of this book indicates, this is a very thorough guide covering the best practices for planning, deploying, optimizing, and organizing SharePoint. This book is not necessarily intended to give you step-by-step instructions for installing SharePoint, but rather cover the full lifecycle of a SharePoint deployment and give you best practice recommendations. The layout and organization of the book is very logical, making it easy to quickly find what you are looking for. It covers both Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and MOSS 2007.It is written to be accessible by anyone on a team evaluating or implementing SharePoint, or anyone who just wants to learn more about it.
The book is broken into the following sections:
Introduction--includes an overview of the various SharePoint Technologies, how to determine which you need, and how SharePoint will help your business.
Part I--Planning--This is not just about planning for the IT infrastructure, but more about planning for the impact that SharePoint will have on your organization, such as dealing with push-back from users after moving away from shared folders to SharePoint document libraries and breaking down departmental "information kingdoms."
Part II--Building--This section gets into best practices for building your environment, including content management strategies, the role of custom development, and dev and test environments, including replication of content between environments.
Part III--Deploying--This section has a great discussion about organizing your content and search/crawling strategy to optimize searchability for your content, security of content, business intelligence, and intranet/extranet/internet deployment scenarios.
Part IV--Operating--This section has great tips on availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and performance monitoring.
What I appreciated most about this book is it is very readable and does not include a lot of "fluff," just straightforward best practices. For example, in Chapter 8, the section on should SharePoint replace file servers is very straightforward about the limitation of SharePoint and when file servers should still be used.
If you are someone new to SharePoint or a System Administrator charged with deploying SharePoint, this book may leave you wanting more--it is not designed to be a how-to book; however, it does include many good recommendations for additional resources.
