iLife Bible ReviewThis book is chock full of great information and little gems of tips covering the entire suite of Apple's iLife products. By 'potentially expensive' I mean that I am just about ready to plunk down the cash for a nice DV camera because Cohen's book makes the iMovie/iDVD products sound very exciting. Who could have imagined being able to produce high quality videos on a personal computer just a few years ago.
And there are lots of wonderful tips that I've found to be extremely helpful. For instance, making bulk changes to iTunes track information (pg. 54). And putting together 'smart playlists' (pg. 75)! Neat! I also found the overview of page construction for iPhoto a real timesaver (pg. 176); and I'm looking forward to using the various titling options (Pg. 277) and transition effects (pg. 312) when my DV camera arrives!

At the Source of Life ReviewIn the first half of this book Raphael engages in a dialogue with his students about philosophic issues, including the nature of reality, love, the mind's role in projecting and creating illusory experience, the role of desire in causing unhappiness, spiritual teachers, art, and the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. The discussion is rich and engaging. The students present Raphael with questions that could easily be our own. XML for Bioinformatics ReviewThis is a nice brief introductory overview of xml in general and its implementations in biological research. The thing I liked about it was it was not too intensive on any topic, and it provided a lot of useful resources both online and literature-wise for me to look up for more information.
It definitely sparked my interest in certain areas of xml and how I may apply it towards my research. One of the things that I really liked was that the author always spelled out all the mentioned acronyms (thank you, finally someone exists out there that does this!). In addition, I also appreciated that the author did not get too bogged down in anyone topic resulting in a bible-like introductory work - thank you again for that. As a result of this I was literally able to read it in few days and determine the usefulness of this technology called `xml`; and without having to read 1k pages to determine this. In this case 'Less is sometimes definitely more'.
My favorite chapter was the one covering Web Services and now understand the basic concepts behind XML-RPC, REST, and SOAP.
The only reason I give it 4 stars is a.)its pricey for a grad student and b.)I use Perl, and he has a two or so chapters using Java to parse xml. So those chapters were not useful to me. But hey you can't please everyone :)
Overall, it helped me recognize just what xml is, how it may be used, who uses it (esp. in biology) - and how they use it, and a list of references for more info. Definitely a good little book to check out for basic conceptual understanding. I want to say its almost a survey, but its actually a little more than that.XML for Bioinformatics OverviewXML for Bioinformatics aims to provide biologists, software engineers, and bioinformatics professionals with a comprehensive introduction to XML and current XML applications in bioinformatics. The book will assume no background in XML, and take readers from basic to intermediate XML concepts. Red Hat Fedora 5 Unleashed ReviewFedora Core 5 was released in March of 2006 so getting this book to press in June was a huge undertaking and the author's have done an excellent job of including tons of information into this book. The Step-by-Step installation chapters include screen shots of the whole process. These are always a great addition to any instructional book.
Post installation configuration includes information on configuring keyboards and mice which is done during the installation process and shouldn't need to be repeated unless the user changes something.
Additional screen shots are used throughout the book which add the connection between the material talked about in the book and what the user sees on the screen.
This book refers to several excellent applications (pirut, yumex) which are a part of Fedora Core 5 but not shown in the Menu's by default.
Although this book attempts to bring the history of Linux, Step-by-Step installation, a plethora of information for beginners and experienced user alike. I don't believe a beginner would be able to use this book as a guide. The heavy use of computer industry acronyms would only serve to confuse the beginner.
This book should definitely be purchased by experienced computer users who want to break into the daily use of Linux and experienced Linux users as a resource for troubleshooting and configuration.

High-Performance Oracle: Proven Methods for Achieving Optimum Performance and Availability ReviewWhen a medical study discovers that the preliminary results are so positive that it is saving a lot of patients' lives the researchers will stop the study to publish preliminary results and get the word out. I haven't finished reading this book. In fact I just got it last week and am only about 100 pages into it. But already I am convinced that this is the best Oracle book in recent memory. It is well written and extremely informative. The format steps a beginner through step by step, and along the way shows the intermediate and advanced Oracle DBA some very important fine points.
The title is a bit deceptive, in that although it certainly is a performance book, the approach is to build the RDBMS application from the ground up with good performance as the ultimate goal. This is the right way to go about getting good performance, as opposed to the crisis management approach applied to legacy systems after the fact. Most legacy applications that performance tuning experts see in the field have a hideous design created by people who no longer work with or for the company and, judging by the implementation, are currently in hiding, hoping that no one can trace the code to them. But if someone were to set up their database by using this book, step by step, it would be a pleasure to tune, though it probably wouldn't need it. There is a great chapter on Data Guard (standby database), and a lot of material that is obviously drawn from years of hands-on day-to-day work with the Oracle RDBMS 'in the trenches.' Pipeline Geomatics: Practice & Innovation (Pipeline Engineering Monograph) ReviewWhen I saw this title, I was really intrigued. As someone in the pipeline industry, I thought that there would be a wealth of knowledge in a technical book like this that I could leverage. This turned out not to be the case. Wikipedia describes Geomatics as land surveying, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and COMPASS), photogrammetry, and related forms of earth mapping. While mentioning some of these disciplines, this book is almost exclusively about GIS applications. Worse, it describes how GIS can help with all the phases of pipeline design, construction and operations without giving any information on how any of this is accomplished. THERE IS NO TECHNICIAL KNOWLEDGE IN THIS BOOK. At a minimum, I would have expected something about workflows or data validation but it simply describes how wonderful GIS is. Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Savvy ReviewI decided to take the publisher up on their invitation to write about the reader's experience. I am writing about the Microsoft Savvy FrontPage 2003 by C. Crumlish.
On the surface this appears to be a very promising book. Right from the cover all the way to the table of contents. So what is the problem ?
The problem is that Mr. Crumlish spends an awful long time belabouring points that are all too obvious. Four entire chapters are wasted on basically two points: know your audience, organise your material. Ok. I got that in chapter I. I don't need it repeated ad nauseam. Even Mr. Crumlish himself writes at one point: "enough with the advise", let's get down to business. But he never does.
The two chapters that I was so looking forward to, Forms and Database connectivity are left barren of any substance. I still don't know how to write to flat files across forms. Say if I have a few pages of questionnaire that the user needs to fill out and then click submit at the very end. How is the material carried over from one from to the next ? No one tells you. Just more advice about knowing your audience and preparing your material.
Then I though well I will get to the chapter on database connectivity and surely Mr. Crumlish will show us how to connect a form to a database and update the contents. No such luck.
You are shown the most basic and simplistic of wizards of how to connect to a database but beyond that nothing.
I don't doubt that a very sincere effort was made to create a "Savvy" book but the end result falls very short of the objective. Mr. Crumlish goes on to profusely thank the web diva for poring over his book to fix errors. Maybe what Mr. Crumlish should have done is asked a plain reader like me to go over the book and then try to build a database-enabled web site. If I am not able to then the book is pointless. And maybe that's what this book is: pointless.

Because Lotus Notes makes so much power available to the power user, it's likely that you've run across Notes applications that have been developed outside of the normal IT structure. In fact, you may have gotten *your* start in Notes development that way. But unfortunately, those power-user applications have a way of becoming mission-critical applications that have no oversight or structure to govern their maintenance and support. That has led to much of the stigma Notes has as not fitting into the normal IT processes. But in Just Enough Governance for Lotus Notes, Craig Schumann lays out a governance process that meets the requirements for IT oversight without destroying the Rapid Application Development (RAD) aspect of the Notes platform.
The book starts out with a history of Notes and how it has found itself in this particular situation. Departments can get powerful applications built without being held up by IT processes. Conversely, these power users normally have no knowledge of external regulations that may affect the information they use, such as Sarbanes-Oxley or HIPAA laws. They are also outside of the normal IT support infrastructure, which means that environment changes could occur that break the application and adversely impact the business. This is *really* not a situation you want to find yourself in. By implementing a form of process control that is adaptable to the Notes environment, these drawbacks can be eliminated. While many formal developers are very familiar with the structure surrounding requirements, design, development, test, and production, you may be in an organization where Notes has grown in a more "grass roots" fashion. The boundaries between a test and production environment may be fuzzy (or non-existent). By following the processes put forth in Just Enough Governance, you can build a solid and controllable Notes environment without handicapping the speed and flexibility associated with Notes development.
There's one aspect of the book that stood out for me, and it's something you may not notice. Schumann works for TeamStudio, a well-known Notes business partner. They have a number of tools that address various parts of the Notes development and governance cycle. In far too many cases, books written by vendors serve primarily as a multi-page sales brochure for their products. As such, it's difficult to separate hype from reality. Not so in this book. Outside of the bio of the author, you'll see the company name mentioned exactly twice. This makes a huge difference in my mind, in that it means that the author has stuck to the subject without sacrificing objectivity.
In today's business environment, the risks and penalties associated with lax process and oversight are expensive. I would highly recommend getting a copy of Just Enough Governance for Lotus Notes to make sure you're not exposing yourself and your company to unnecessary dangers. Along the way, you may just convince your IT leadership that Notes can be governed just like every other platform.

Knowledge for Development: Comparing British, Japanese, Swedish and World Bank Aid ReviewThose dealing with knowledge management in donor agencies should read this book and keep it on their bookshelves. Many others in donor agencies, their government oversight bodies, and their client organizations will find it interesting. The book covers the bilateral donor agencies of the UK, Sweden and Japan, and the World Bank. It assesses the discussions of knowledge in selected policy documents of those agencies, their efforts to improve internal knowledge, their evaluation practices, their ICT-based knowledge management systems, etc. I have been involved in some of the efforts the describe, and their selection seems reasonable. The coverage is primarily focused on the 1990's, and the late 1990's were a time of rapid change in their knowledge systems. King and McGrath have read a great deal, and have interviewed a very large number of people within the agencies they study. Their work has both the advantages and disadvantages of their being academics outside of the organizations they study. They note differences among the bilateral donor agencies, marking the contingency of knowledge processes: thus Japanese aid is influenced by its experience as a recipient of foreign aid as well as a long-time donor, and by the concept of wakon yosai (Japanese spirit, Western technology) which helped guide technology transfer in Japan since the Meiji period; Sweden has maintained more interest in higher education and in science and technology than other donors. They conclude that "the knowledge revolution in agencies remains largely a series of uncoordinated projects that are being implemented without any real overall vision or strategy." (As perhaps it should be.) They do not answer the critical question as to whether the costs of the efforts to improve knowledge systems in development assistance have been justified by improvement of the efficiency or effectiveness of such assistance, but I suspect that question is unanswerable. King and McGrath do illuminate what has been happening, summarizing a great deal of information, and I found the book stimulating. This statement marks the beginning in earnest of a new discourse of knowledge-based aid, which has spread rapidly across the development field. This book is the first detailed attempt to analyze this new discourse and practice.Through an examination of four agencies--the World Bank, the British Department for International Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency--the book explores what this new approach to aid means in both theory and practice. It argues that too much of the emphasis of knowledge-based aid has been on developing capacity within agencies rather than addressing the expressed needs of Southern "partners."Moreover, it questions whether knowledge-based aid leads to greater agency certainty about what constitutes good development.
