Windows Administration Resource Kit: Productivity Solutions for IT Professionals ReviewI have never written a review for a book before, guess I'm just too busy or lazy (not sure which), but I just had to write something about this book. I would give it a 6th star if I could. Yes the book and topics covered are just that good! I first heard about this book through an article in Windows IT Pro magazine, another must have for system administrators. Once I read that article, I knew this book was a must have.
I am almost finished with this book and I have to say that "It has changed the way I look at and deal with Windows and Active Directory management!" The book is a great blend of technical knowledge and solutions to "Real World" issues that system and network administrators face every day. This book is helping me to reshape our entire infrastructure into a more manageable and productive environment. I thank you, my co-workers thank you, and my users thank you! If you buy this book and read through the concepts, implement the ideas that work best for you, your job is going to be so much easier and your users are going to be so much happier.
The book is massive and could be overwhelming at first look, but once you start reading into the content and concepts you start to see windows and active directory management in a new light. Each chapter builds on the previous, and Dan does a great job of making complex subjects easier to tackle (For example: How do I best organize my Active Directory in a logical easy manner?). Going through the book you get the distinct impression that Dan Holme has been in your shoes dealing with typical Active Directory issues for years and is pouring out all his real world experience onto the pages, it's almost like he is right there with you. You could spend 100 times the amount of the book on a consultant and still not get the same value and knowledge this book is going to give you!
Buy this book, in fact buy 2 and give one to a friend.Windows Administration Resource Kit: Productivity Solutions for IT Professionals OverviewGet the comprehensive, essential resource for improving Windows administrator productivity. Mastering Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 ReviewI had no background in exchange and was asked to convert a Domino installation to Exchange 2007. I bought this book because of my prior experience with Sybex (excellent), and fully prepared to have to buy more books on the same subject before it did the migration. I did not need another book.
The book is very well organized, current, and accurate. The screen shots and steps outlined are exactly what you see on the screen. The content is very detailed, but does not get you bogged down. You will get the most out of it by reading in order from the beginning to the end.
The book helps make decisions such as hardware, ssl certificates, etc. prior to doing an installation. The real issues with an exchange migration/new installation are usually AD, DNS, firewalls, etc. and the book provides very good insights.
One can simply execute the installation as one progresses through the chapters. Blogs and forums for any particular topic at websites such as technet, [..], blackberry forums, etc. can be used as supplements.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Implementation and Administration ReviewI have found this book very helpful with my exchange upgrade, it does talk about various subjects. It also mentioned LCR and SCR areas I am very interested in. It is more like a "nice to know" more then a "need to know" book. I will mainly use to to refer back to see what the author has to say. I used other internet site, and my own guesswork to do the upgrade to exchange 2007. I am looking forward to other books, like ones that are 1500 pages. I really would like for someone to cover DR and SCR in great detail, like multi-site failover scenerios. Overall, this is a quality book, it was VERY helpful with OWA an area I was baffled on and could not find the info on the internet. To be fair, I have not read it from page 1 to the end, but for me that one fix was worth the cost of the book. So far, this is the only book I could find that covers SP1 and SCR, so it is the best out there for now. My desire is to learn everything about exchange 2007, so I will have to hunt for a larger book on the other subjects I want to learn in detail. Overall I would recommend for everyone. use this book, and the internet because you are going to need to find TONS of information to do the upgrade to 2007. It was not easy in my opinion, and I have been doing this for 15 years. The actually product Exchange 2007 is very good once it is set up.Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Implementation and Administration OverviewIf you're an IT administrator preparing to move to Exchange Server 2007, this book is for you. It concentrates on what you need to migrate quickly and successfully, and it is fully up to speed on the new features brought by SP1. You'll explore the new Exchange 2007 management interface and get a primer on the Exchange Management Shell. In an extended case study, you'll follow a company with a thousand mailboxes, multiple servers, and offices in Hawaii and Sydney, as it migrates to Exchange Server 2007.

Monitoring Exchange Server 2007 with System Center Operations Manager ReviewThis book is different than most. The author takes the time to not only explain what to do but also WHY and HOW. You can read the chapters on Exchange 2003 (Chapter 10) and Exchange 2007 (Chapter 11) and get your money's worth from this book.
The author doesn't waste your time covering the detailed history of Exchange 2003/2007 or System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). Necessary background information is provided to provide a basic understanding of Exchange, SCOM and system monitoring.
The author takes a very careful and thorough approach to getting you ready to monitor your Exchange environment with SCOM. First he takes you through installing, configuring and deploying SCOM. Second, he takes you through installing all the necessary SCOM management packs. Finally, you learn what to monitor, why you should monitor and how to monitor.
One advantage you will get from this book is not only will you learn but you will understand your Exchange and SCOM environment.
The book is not without issues but the issues generally are relatively small. One example is the explanation of RAID in the inset on page 41. It is stated that the storage space "in a RAID-5 array is (N-1), where N is the number of gigabytes of space on the smallest disk in the array". By that explanation, a RAID-5 set of 3 300GB drives would only be 299GB and not 600GB.
However, the author correctly states on page 40 that RAID-5 "has a one disk cost" and goes into extreme detail beginning on page 350 how to specifically calculate the performance of your disk subsystem.
One must presume that this is simply an error which got past technical editing.
Minor errors aside, this book is an excellent resource for learning and understanding how to monitor your Exchange environment with SCOM 2007.Monitoring Exchange Server 2007 with System Center Operations Manager OverviewSystem Center Operations Manager 2007 is the new version of Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 and offers valuable new advantages for improving the manageability of Microsoft servers and applications.
