Administering Windows Vista Security: The Big Surprises ReviewHaving spoken at various Microsoft events on Windows Vista security, I have been looking for a comprehensive and deep book to recommend to IT administrators. I recently went through all of the Vista books listed in the bookstore looking for anything that called out Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) and Mandatory Integrity Control (MIC) in the index. Mark's book was the only one that even mentioned these topics.
Upon reading the book, not only does the book call out all of these topics, but it also explains them in great detail. Additionally real world examples are provided to demonstrate the new security features that are included with Windows Vista. It is one thing to be able to discuss the features, much as the whitepapers do, it is another thing to be able to show people examples of how these features actually work within the product. Mark further goes on to probe the product for unintended uses of the security features providing insightful information as to how Windows Vista security can and cannot be used. As an example, Mark's investigation of providing ACE's based on integrity level.
Overall I found this book to be the most thorough review of what has changed in the Windows Vista (and in the future Longhorn) security model. It was a great read with great examples and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.Administering Windows Vista Security: The Big Surprises OverviewAn Inside Look at Windows Vista Security for Systems AdministratorsGet an early start on Windows Vista security and the technology shifts you'll need to know as a systems administrator. Universal Command Guide: For Operating Systems ReviewI had waited a long time for a book that could serve me as "manual pages" for different operating systems.
Best part of this book is that if you are familiar with one OS you can now find the similar command in another OS. Afterall, when learning commands of a new OS the most difficult part (atleast for myself) was to ask the right questions - what can you do in this OS? I've used the book to find right commands for optimizing my Linux environment for heavy Matlab use and the book has served it's purpose well.

Because of good indexing of the book I feel that it is also good material for university students, especially for Operating systems courses.
There is one bad thing about the book, though. It is extremely big and heavy - and will probably ruin your bookbag ;DUniversal Command Guide: For Operating Systems Overview

Debugged MZ/PE: MagaZine for/from Practicing Engineers ReviewVolume 1, Issue 1 starts off with a multi-page table of WinDbg commands and patterns/typical scenarios you would use them in. This alone is worth the marginal cost of this publication.
RECOMMENDEDDebugged MZ/PE: MagaZine for/from Practicing Engineers OverviewWelcome to the first issue of Debugged! MZ/PE magazine! More than 3 years ago I conceived an idea of a Debugging Gazette but was swayed by a blogging wave. Last year DumpAnalysis.org together with OpenTask iterative and incremental publisher announced 2009 as The Year of Debugging, 2010 as The Year of Dump Analysis and the magazine is the vital part of this initiative. The goal of every issue is to be useful as much as possible and be on a desk of practicing engineers for as long as possible. By engineers I mean software engineers in general, software technical support and escalation engineers, and software test engineers. To achieve this goal every issue features useful tables and charts in full colour and back covers can be used as mini posters featuring tips on debugging. The focus is on Windows debugging but not limited to if any information about other platforms is of sufficient generality. Despite an economic downturn and recession we decided to go ahead and even increased the number of pages for the first issue. This issue features 12 page WinDbg command supplement to pattern-driven memory dump analysis methodology, overview of Win32dd complete memory dumper and PowerDbg enhancements to debug ASP.NET code. - Dmitry Vostokov - Editor-in-Chief

Windows Administration Resource Kit: Productivity Solutions for IT Professionals ReviewI have never written a review for a book before, guess I'm just too busy or lazy (not sure which), but I just had to write something about this book. I would give it a 6th star if I could. Yes the book and topics covered are just that good! I first heard about this book through an article in Windows IT Pro magazine, another must have for system administrators. Once I read that article, I knew this book was a must have.
I am almost finished with this book and I have to say that "It has changed the way I look at and deal with Windows and Active Directory management!" The book is a great blend of technical knowledge and solutions to "Real World" issues that system and network administrators face every day. This book is helping me to reshape our entire infrastructure into a more manageable and productive environment. I thank you, my co-workers thank you, and my users thank you! If you buy this book and read through the concepts, implement the ideas that work best for you, your job is going to be so much easier and your users are going to be so much happier.
The book is massive and could be overwhelming at first look, but once you start reading into the content and concepts you start to see windows and active directory management in a new light. Each chapter builds on the previous, and Dan does a great job of making complex subjects easier to tackle (For example: How do I best organize my Active Directory in a logical easy manner?). Going through the book you get the distinct impression that Dan Holme has been in your shoes dealing with typical Active Directory issues for years and is pouring out all his real world experience onto the pages, it's almost like he is right there with you. You could spend 100 times the amount of the book on a consultant and still not get the same value and knowledge this book is going to give you!
Buy this book, in fact buy 2 and give one to a friend.Windows Administration Resource Kit: Productivity Solutions for IT Professionals OverviewGet the comprehensive, essential resource for improving Windows administrator productivity. Essential PowerShell ReviewEssential PowerShell is a great way to learn PowerShell from the ground up and also as an examples-oriented reference. Coverage of the language essentials is concise, accurate, and demonstrated with examples. There are no long sections on generic programming concepts (i.e. what a variable is, what a loop is). So if you are already a programmer, this is a great book to learn PowerShell. Beyond the language essentials, the author does a great job covering third party modules and tools. There is also a surprising breadth to this book for only being ~500 pages; take a look at the table of contents. Essential PowerShell is almost a cookbook; you don't have to read it from end-to-end and many sections stand on their own.
The book could have used more coverage of using native commands (i.e. parsing the output, checking error conditions).
Be aware this book does not cover PowerShell 2.0, but it was published before 2.0 was released.Essential PowerShell OverviewUse PowerShell to Streamline and Automate Your Most Time-Consuming Windows Administration TasksWith Windows PowerShell, Microsoft brings innovative console-based system administration and scripting to Windows clients and servers. PowerShell combines the best features of traditional UNIX shells with the immense power of the .NET Framework, offering a consistent and easy-to-use replacement for both the Windows command line and the Windows Script Host. In Essential PowerShell, noted expert Holger Schwichtenberg gives Windows sysadmins all the knowledge and sample scripts they need to successfully administer production systems with PowerShell. Schwichtenberg begins by introducing the innovative PowerShell architecture, along with crucial PowerShell concepts such as pipelining and navigation. Next, he introduces the PowerShell Script Language, shows the secure execution of command sequences as scripts, and demonstrates how to use PowerShell to access essential operating system interfaces such as COM, WMI, ADSI, and ADO.NET. After you've mastered the fundamentals, Schwichtenberg presents an extensive collection of PowerShell solutions for virtually every area of day-to-day administration. For each topic, he presents dozens of self-contained examples, all downloadable from a companion Web site. He covers both Microsoft's standard PowerShell commandlets and the free commandlets available as PowerShell Community Extensions. He also presents a full chapter of tips, tricks, and troubleshooting solutions. The Book of Qt 4: The Art of Building Qt Applications ReviewThis book is a fairly standard tutorial on building user interfaces. It covers the basics, and should be sufficient to get most C++ programmers up to speed. However, there are quite a few points in the book where the author hand-waves his way through a process. This can make following the tutorials somewhat confusing and gets in the way of the general understanding of the process. In addition, either because of platform differences or poor testing, some of the examples do not work properly. For example, in the cuteedit2 example in Chapter 4, the buttons for the discard changes dialog have their meaning reversed. On the surface it is hard to tell if this is a bug in the book or in the OS X implementation of QT 4. Finally, many key ideas a mentioned almost in passing (like the use of the tr() function to aid in translations), making it imperative to carefully read every word.
This text pales in comparison to the Hillegass text on Cocoa programming, which could be considered the gold standard of UI programming tutorials. In general, you will be able to get yourself started on Qt programming with this text. However, the lack of quality control will make the experience a little less pleasing than it otherwise could have been. The Book of Qt 4: The Art of Building Qt Applications Overview
Cross-platform development is a kind of holy grail, and Trolltech's Qt toolkit may well be the most promising solution yet to this development challenge. Qt is widely used for the development of GUI applications as well as console tools and servers, and it's especially appealing to programmers who need to write cross-platform applications to run on Linux/Unix, Mac, and Windows machines without having to rewrite for each platform.

The Book of Qt 4 offers an in-depth explanation of Qt 4 that goes beyond the common focus on C++ programming. Author Daniel Molkentin uses practical examples to explain features like the signal/slot concept and the event system, as he guides you through developing applications with and without Qt's graphical GUI builder, Qt Designer. And as a core KDE developer, Molkentin's head is full of real-world problems and solutions that he peppers liberally throughout The Book of Qt 4, making it a resource that you'll consult time and again. You'll find coverage of:

Tools for creating dialogs
GUI design with the Qt Designer
Widget layout and dialog construction
Data visualization using Qt's model/view concept
The QtSql module and the graphics library Arthur
File handling, XML, processes, and network connections
Databases and threading
Event handling and using drag and drop
Internationalization and debugging

As well as lots of useful hints on how to use Qt's datatypes, containers, and algorithms and how to develop user-friendly applications.

Whether you're already a Qt developer or you're just considering Qt for cross-platform development, you'll find The Book of Qt 4 to be indispensable.

Pro Windows PowerShell ReviewI've been using the command prompt (DOS for your old schoolers) since the days of MS-DOS 2.11. I thought I had done about everything a person could possibly do with the limited scripting abilities of the command prompt -- and then I happened across this book and it was like going back to school.
Windows Powershell is essentially object-oriented programming mashing up with the command line, with some extras thrown in. In this book the author shows you all the new tricks of the trade and will have you looking at ways to automate your Windows tasks in ways you never thought possible.
There are many things that we want to do on our Windows servers or XP/Vista boxes that you have to "hack" or find a third-party utility to do. With Windows Powershell a lot of those tasks can now be brought back "in house" without the need for hacks and kludges.
The nice thing about this book is that it not only talks about Powershell, it also walks you through real-life examples. It's written in many ways like an introductory programming language book would be -- but at the same time the author remembers that most readers will be IT System Admins and not programmers, so he doesn't bury the reader in programming talk to the point they are lost.
If you work in IT and deal with Windows servers you owe it to yourself to check out Windows Powershell and this book. You will find that under the hood of that Windows box is a supercharged '78 Trans-Am just waiting for you to put the pedal to the metal and experience the power!
Pro Windows PowerShell OverviewOur goal is to show how PowerShell can help script most of those tasks and reduce their burden. The book contains examples on automating typical system administration tasks: configuration, monitoring, network queries, text manipulation, and file operations. The ideas presented will be beneficial to power users needing a better shell and an automation environment, system and network administrators looking to streamline their daily activities, and software developers wishing to optimize their build and deploy process. We will jump right in and get results fast. The most important feature of the book is that it will show everything using many, specific examples that provide real value to the user. It will show "the big picture": interoperability with the outside world. Users will see examples dealing with other programs, the OS, and the network. Plus, It will introduce free and open-source tools and extensions that help us get results fast. (We are unique here - none of the competitors does that.) Powershell has proven to be a very popular area and this book has the contents and the technical expertise within to be a success.

Programming with Managed Extensions for Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Pro-Developer) ReviewIf you are the type of person that already knows Visual C++ and all the MFC,ATL,... stuff. And now you just want to know how use the NET Framework in the C++ language. This is an ideal book for acomplishing that objective.
One of the things i hate in many tec. books it's that they tell the same 'story' over and over...and over again. In this case the author simply assumes that you know VC++ and introduces the NET Framework to you.
Chapter 5 is worth the money spent and deserves a reminder, the author gets down to the metal and explains the system internals of the NET Framework via VC++. Even if you don't buy the book you should read this chapter ......Programming with Managed Extensions for Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Pro-Developer) Overview
Visual C++ has several capabilities that Visual C#® does not have, including better access to unmanaged code, the ability to mix managed and unmanaged code in the same source file, direct access to unmanaged data, and other features. Because developers who use C# may want to implement more C++ in their Microsoft .NET applications, this book thoroughly covers the Visual C++ managed extensions, plus how to write .NET libraries and applications. Readers learn the different programming rules for managed extensions, along with the features that are new to Visual C++ and other .NET-compatible languages.
