Visual Basic .NET Bible ReviewI guess that I am the exception here, since everyone else seems to love this book. I thought that the book was not very well put together. Let me give you some concrete examples:
First, I think that it has already been said that this book does not have enough OOP. That is probably true. I have been doing OOP for so long that I didn't miss the omission, but it might be a little frustrating for a novice.
There are also a lot of little things that I noticed. Much of the book seems to be a reprinting of the .NET SDK documentation. Another thing that bothered me quite a bit is that in their tables that list the methods of classes, they didn't list the return values of the methods. This may seem like a little thing, but it meant that I had to go look everything up in the SDK anyway, so after a while I ditched the book and just used the SDK.
Another thing that I noticed was some incorrect terminology. As an example, Mr. Beres refers to the System.IO.Directory class as a "static" class. I knew what he meant, because I am also a Java programmer, but that terminology is not used in VB.NET. That could be very confusing because there is no such thing as a static class in VB.NET. VB used to support static methods, but static in this sense meant something completely different than what Mr. Beres is trying to express. I believe that he meant that the class consists only of Shared methods, not that it is a static class.
Again, I don't mean to nitpick here, because there were some good things, too. I have also written books for a competing publisher, so I know how hard it is to get everything just right (trust me folks, its not as easy as it looks!), and the authors have done an admirable job. It's just that better attention to detail as well as more consideration of the audience could have made this book so much better.Visual Basic .NET Bible OverviewContributors Include: Jim Chandler, Jacob Grass, Kevin Grossnicklaus, Uday Kranti, NIIT, Rob Teixeira, and Yancey Jones.Visual Basic .NET Bible covers everything you need to get up and runningwith this much changed version of Visual Basic and to begin creating applications for the new Microsoft.NET Platform.

Working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System (Pro-Developer) ReviewIf you are looking for a book that gives you the ins and outs of Team System, this is not the book. If, on the other hand, you would like to know what Team System is, then this book is fine.
I did not get a chance to get a PDC version of the book, so I am not sure exactly what was in that "beta" edition. I will take the other reviewers word that this book is very much the same edition. It is quite common for authors to simply fix chapters from beta to final release, so this is both a common and accepted practice. Given the advice, however, I would probably not own both.
I have been using VSTS since the first beta that had its bits. I am, overall, impressed with the tool, as well as the MSDN online articles on the product. I was looking for a book with a bit more depth on the subject and there are some notable portions in this book, although most of the book is far too simple for my tastes.
What do you get?
The first three chapters are an extremely high level overview of Team System, including the Team Foundation Server. They are useful for a foundation on the product, but anyone with any type of exposure will likely skim through these chapters.
The next four chapters deal with the four roles (Project Manager, Architect, Developer and Tester) across the products (Team Foundation Server and its hooks, Team System Architect, Team System Developer and Team System Tester). These chapters have a bit more meat than the first three chapters, but are stil fairly high level.
The next two chapters are a bit deeper. Chapter 8 deals with MSF (Microsoft Solutions Framework) and is a decent overview of how MSF works, for those with little or no exposure; It is not, by any means, a full featured tome on the subject. Chapter 9 focuses on extending Team System and has a few nice code samples; most of the work is far too simple to make up for the shortcomings of Team System (for example, the build engine has to be customized for Continuous Integration (like using Cruise Control with nAnt for a truly automated build on check in)).
The final chapter of section 3 deals with deployment and closing out a build cycle. There is not a great deal of detail here and it primarily focuses on the reports available in TFS.
Of the two appendices, the first is probably the most useful as it provides context for how Team System is used from end to end. It is fairly basic information, but does deal with how to recognize Release Candidate time. The second is not much more than a text only listing of some of the visual elements you can use in the designer.
Don't get me wrong, I am glad I have this book, as I have learned a bit more Team System through the book. I wish it was a bit deeper, but there is certainly a market for intro level material in this product.
My recommendation: If you are a beginner with Team System and want an overview with a bit of meat, this book will fill the need. If you are already familiar with the product and looking for a full meal, it would be best to wait for other books on the product.Working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System (Pro-Developer) OverviewA pragmatic, hands-on overview of the new Microsoft Visual Studio team development environment, which features new tools and end-to-end integration for the roles of architect, developer, tester, and project manager.

Microsoft® .NET Development for Microsoft Office (Pro-Developer) ReviewThere is a ton of misleading and confusing information on the web regarding what technologies you can use to develop against specific versions of Office. This book gives you all the practical advice you need to hit the ground running with managed COM development in Office. From a thorough introduction of the technologies available and their pros and cons, to very specific examples that show workarounds to common problems such as using custom icons in a toolbar that you add programmatically, how to use a C++ shim to sign your .NET add-on and make sure that you won't run into security issues in strict corporate environments, etc. If you are starting out with managed COM development on the Office platform then this is the book you absolutely need. We bought this book to use on a team project and it was so good that I picked up a copy for personal use at home.
The book does assume that you are a relatively experienced programmer. If you are interested in using Visual Studio Tools for Office instead of COM, then you should check out Eric Carter's Visual Studio Tools for Office instead but be aware that you can only target Office 2003+ using VSTO. You need to use COM, not VSTO, in order to target older versions of Office.Microsoft® .NET Development for Microsoft Office (Pro-Developer) Overview
Create Microsoft Office-based applications that work seamlessly in the Microsoft .NET environment-with this essential reference from Microsoft developer Andrew Whitechapel. The author provides expert advice on the various approaches you can use to build managed solutions with Office, and gives practical guidance on the most viable techniques for technical and business scenarios. You'll begin building custom .NET-based applications with detailed, practical exercises that take you through solutions from beginning to end. Andrew shares tactics, strategies, and best practices-plus full sample code-to help you maximize your development efforts. Packed with the same information used by Microsoft's Product Support Services team, this book is the one reference that every Office and .NET developer should have.

Discover how to:

Develop powerful .NET solutions for Office with managed interop assemblies
Integrate managed code with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
Create custom commands and functionality with managed COM and Automation add-ins
Build custom Office features with external data using Web services, .NET remoting, and research services
Use Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office to create document-centric solutions for Microsoft Excel and Word
Use digital signatures, strong-naming and .NET Code Access Security

Working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 ReviewAs a long term developer, I have used many different compilers and development environments. They are all different and somewhat confusing when you bring them up and are confronted with a multitude of icons and menu items. This book is the only printed material I could find about this version of the development environment from Microsoft Press. I was dissapointed by the length of the manual and it's focus. It is not so much a how to about the Visual Studio, as a technical reference about how to extend the environment. I am glad I bought it and I wouldn't return it. It is not enough information though for a new developer confronted with this powerful and complex development tool. In time there will be other books on Visual Studio 2005, and I will buy them to answer questions that linger. As always, a subscription to MSDN Library is the most valuable reference. MSDN Library however is a huge collection of data, some of which is obsolete, that has been thrown together over the years, like Microsoft's SDKs. In conclusion, the book is a valuable asset when using Visual Studio 2005 and I am glad I bought it. I recommend that developer's buy it, with the caveat that it is not enough by itself. I hope Visual Studio 2005 lasts long enough to become documented to a helpful extent.Working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Overview
This is not a book about how to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, but rather a book that shows how to adapt it to work best for you. Visual Studio 2005 includes a range of tools that allow customization of the development environment. This book shows how to use editors and macros, the add-in architecture, the programmable user interface, and other extensibility features to make repetitive development tasks easier and give programming teams common tools.

Beginning Windows Phone 7 Development ReviewBeginning Windows Phone 7 Development by Lee and Chuvyrov is aimed at developers new to the Windows Phone 7 platform (which is probably most of us). This book expects a basic understanding of C#, the .NET Framework and XAML so if you have no prior programming experience, an introductory text is a pre-requisite. .NET developers without Silverlight or WPF experience shouldn't find the content too challenging as it is either explained sufficiently by the authors or fairly easy to grasp in its own right.
Part 1, The Essentials of Windows Phone 7 Application Development, starts with a high level introduction to the Windows Phone 7 platform and then drills into some examples ranging from the obligatory Hello World through to a thorough Windows Azure-based cloud services end-to-end scenario. There are plenty of step-by-step instructions and loads of screenshots in these five introductory chapters making them a easy read.
Part 2, Using Windows Phone 7 Technologies, comprises the remaining fourteen chapters and the vast majority of the book. The meat of the book is in these chapters and provides a reasonable grounding for developers looking to discover the breadth of the Windows Phone 7 platform without getting bogged down in too much detail.
The book is organised reasonably well and covers the material well enough for someone new to the platform to become productive relatively quickly. The tone of the book is light without trying too hard to be humourous, which I was thankful for. However, I have two complaints to make, resulting in a less than perfect score.
First, there are a number of inconsistencies in the example code printed in the book. For example, in Chapter 2, the book refers to a TextBlock called textBlock1 in the description of the subsequent code but then goes on to use a TextBox called txtMessage in the actual code listing. There are plenty of similar errors in this section. Its easy enough to understand where the book has gone wrong and correct for it but it may be frustrating for beginners.
Secondly, and far more annoying for me, was the volume of grammatical errors. The authors' command of English is obviously good but between the frequent errors, odd turns of phrase, and some repetitive wording, I found the writing to be a distraction (there's something about code being referred to as codes that really irritates me). Thankfully I perservered through to Part 2 of the book where either the writing improved or I became too desensitised to care anymore.
The book is fine as a survey of the important areas of Windows Phone 7 which will likely require your attention as a developer. If you don't mind the occasional superficial inconsistencies in code examples or if the quality of the writing doesn't get in your way, you could do far worse. Some work by the editors at Apress should result in a much improved second edition as it really only needs polishing rather than a rewrite.

Professional Visual Studio 2008 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewLet me start with a disclaimer: I know Nick Randolph and Dave Gardner personally through my involvement with the Perth .NET user group. They are both very talented and skilled developers and active in their support of the developer community. I tried not to let this fact bias this short review too much!
I reviewed the Visual Studio 2005 predecessor of this book some time ago, and I think the new 2008 is an improvement. It's a big book and not just by its size. It covers a huge amount of material and could probably have been subtitled `everything you wanted to know about Visual Studio 2008 but were afraid to ask'! The Visual Studio 2008 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is a complex beast, and worth getting to know well, if like me, you spend most of your working life in it! You could, of course, still do most of your development in Notepad, but you could also wear a hair shirt...
The primary focus of this book is on the IDE itself, rather than the specific languages that can be used within .NET or indeed the .NET Framework itself. I'm not going to give a chapter by chapter account of what is contained in this book, mainly because it would take a loooooong time, but also because I fear my head might explode! Seriously though, I have read around 75% of it. The writing style is clear and I doubt whether you could make any book about Visual Studio more engaging than they have achieved.
The authors' goals, as stated, were not just updating the Visual Studio 2005 version of this book or simply to explain how to use Visual Studio, but also to create a set of productivity best practices and recommendations on how to use Visual Studio features in an effective way. I think they have achieved that goal.
One of the first Amazon reviews was not favourable, but that reviewer was looking for a book that would teach C# and an introduction to the .NET framework. As Dave mentioned in his response to that reviewer, although both authors do have a bias towards Visual Basic, approximately 40% of the code samples are written in C#. There is also a chapter that provides coverage of F# (http://mitch-wheat.blogspot.com/2008/09/new-net-f-ctp-release.html)
It is probably not the sort of book you would read cover to cover, but rather delve into specific chapters to gain insight into particular features. It's great for quickly finding out what features are available. The first day it was on my desk at work, I used it to quickly find a debugging gem that might have otherwise remained undiscovered.
Kudos goes to Nick and Dave for producing a great resource for developers.

Visual Basic .NET All in One Desk Reference for Dummies Reviewhi
well I have tons of "for dummies" books(from spiritual to graphics and programming and the like) and this is the first that isn't good.
problems:
just some i'll like to mention.
-the author writes code for you to copy and doesnt include the "_" between the lines (other manuals/tutorials/books at least tell u to put "_" , since they dont have space to write the full code in one line), so if you go by his code format you will keep getting errors.
-on one hand the author seems to write nothing about certain vb.net code and on the other hand he writes tons about the difference between vb6 and vb.net.
he devotes tons of the book on stuff that is new to vb.net compared to vb6, while not actaully describing vb.net stuff in the first place.
in conclusion:
if your coming from vb6, this is a great guide/reference for u. if your not, using the help(references/tutorials/info that u can get on controls/commands) that actaully comes with vb2003.net is far more effective.Visual Basic .NET All in One Desk Reference for Dummies Overview* Covers all aspects of VB .NET programming in seven self-contained minibooks: Visual Basic .NET Programming Fundamentals, Advanced Visual Basic .NET Programming, The .NET Editor, Object-Oriented Programming, Programming for the Web, Database Programming, and Graphics and Games* Visual Basic is the primary tool of more than fifty percent of all professional developers, so the upgrade to VB .NET represents a major paradigm shift; this handy all-in-one guide gives them easy access to valuable information* Guides the reader through getting integrated with the rest of Visual Studio .NET, covers programmatic encryption and other .NET security capabilities, and shows how to program for Web services with VB .NET and ASP.NET* Companion Web site includes a must-have bonus appendix that provides parallel VB 6 and VB .NET sample code to help VB programmers make the somewhat difficult transition to .NET

Pro C# 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform (Windows.Net) ReviewVisually this book is easy to read. A detailed 37 page index and bold page numbers at the top of the pages make it easy to quickly locate desired information.
Sometimes the term "Pro" is used in the title of books that don't really deserve that classification. In my opinion, this book has very much earned the "Pro" designation. While the C# language is covered in detail, no time is wasted describing what an array or variable is. Another example, the book spends more time explaining how to implement encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism within the language than explaining these basic OO concepts. So if you are new to programming, look elsewhere.
The style of writing might be described as a touch dry. Not much in the way of humor or such, but then again this is a "Pro" book. You are reading it for information, not entertainment.
In many respects this book is a two in one deal. The first ~450 pages are a thorough coverage of the C# language. The remainder being an extensive look at the .NET framework.
In short I would describe the book as a very comprehensive guide to C# 2008 and the 3.5 version of the .NET framework recommend it highly.Pro C# 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform (Windows.Net) Overview
The first edition of this book was released at the 2001 Tech Ed conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Since that time, this text has been revised, tweaked, and enhanced to account for the changes found within each release of the .NET platform (1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and now 3.5).

.NET 3.0 was more of an augmentative release, essentially providing three new APIs: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF). As you would expect, coverage of the "W's" has been expanded a great deal in this version of the book from the previous Special Edition text.

Unlike .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5 provides dozens of C# language features and .NET APIs. This edition of the book will walk you through all of this material using the same readable approach as was found in previous editions. Rest assured, you'll find detailed coverage of Language Integrated Query (LINQ), the C# 2008 language changes (automatic properties, extension methods, anonymous types, etc.) and the numerous bells and whistles of Visual Studio 2008.

What you'll learn
Everything you need to know-get up to speed with C# 2008 quickly and efficiently.
Discover all the new .NET 3.5 features-Language Integrated Query, anonymous types, extension methods, automatic properties, and more.
Get a professional foothold-targeted to appeal to experienced software professionals, this book gives you the facts you need the way you need to see them.
A rock-solid foundation-focuses on everything you need to be a successful .NET 3.5 programmer, not just the new features. Get comfortable with all the core aspects of the platform - including assemblies, remoting, Windows Forms, Web Forms, ADO.NET, XML web services, and much more.

Who this book is for
If you're checking out this book for the first time, understand that it targets experienced software professionals and/or students of computer science (so please don't expect three chapters devoted to "for" loops). The mission of this text is to provide you with a rock-solid foundation to the C# 2008 programming language and the core aspects of the .NET platform (object-oriented programming, assemblies, file IO, Windows Forms/WPF, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, WCF, WF, etc.). Once you digest the information presented in these 33 chapters, you'll be in a perfect position to apply this knowledge to your specific programming assignments, and you'll be well equipped to explore the .NET universe on your own terms.

Programming with Managed Extensions for Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Pro-Developer) ReviewIf you are the type of person that already knows Visual C++ and all the MFC,ATL,... stuff. And now you just want to know how use the NET Framework in the C++ language. This is an ideal book for acomplishing that objective.
One of the things i hate in many tec. books it's that they tell the same 'story' over and over...and over again. In this case the author simply assumes that you know VC++ and introduces the NET Framework to you.
Chapter 5 is worth the money spent and deserves a reminder, the author gets down to the metal and explains the system internals of the NET Framework via VC++. Even if you don't buy the book you should read this chapter ......Programming with Managed Extensions for Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Pro-Developer) Overview
Visual C++ has several capabilities that Visual C#® does not have, including better access to unmanaged code, the ability to mix managed and unmanaged code in the same source file, direct access to unmanaged data, and other features. Because developers who use C# may want to implement more C++ in their Microsoft .NET applications, this book thoroughly covers the Visual C++ managed extensions, plus how to write .NET libraries and applications. Readers learn the different programming rules for managed extensions, along with the features that are new to Visual C++ and other .NET-compatible languages.

C# 2010 All-in-One For Dummies ReviewFirst, I should state that I haven't been a huge fan of the For Dummies Books in the past. I hadn't cracked one open in several years, though, so when someone suggested this book and gave me a copy, I decided to give it a fair chance.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's a solid book covering a wide variety of topics in C#, as well as object oriented programming in general. It's by no means a deep dive into most of the subjects, but it isn't meant to be. It honestly excels at what it sets out to do - take you from step one of writing your first program to showing you more advanced topics such as WPF in order to get you working. It even spends an entire mini-book going over what's new in C# 4.0
I've been writing code since the late 80's or early 90's and have been doing it professionally for a number of years, the last few of which have been in C#, so I was tempted to skip the first two books and get to what I considered the "meat" - the things I hadn't learned yet. I'm glad that I didn't because I even picked up some things that I didn't know in the first two "intro" mini-books.
Personally, I loved the more hands on style of giving an example that you can try out and then explaining what's happening, providing the theory behind the code as you go. It's an improvement over a lot of books that just tend to throw seemingly endless streams of information at you with no practical application. The use of humor to break things up and keep the reader entertained was also greatly appreciated, because it helps a lot of people (myself included) remember the material better.
Unlike the other reviewer, my book was in perfect condition with no missing or mislabeled pages, so I can assure you that not all copies of the book contain that flaw.
In all, I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about C# or wants to try it for the first time. It's a good read and will probably become a reference for me.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010: A Beginner's Guide ReviewOne may wonder how anyone could write a decent introductory book to Visual Studio and related programming, do it just over 400 pages with decent sized type and screenshots, and still cover a little bit of everything from Asp.Net to MVC to WPF. This book successfully manages that task quite well.
The first four chapters get you up to speed on finding your way around visual studio enough to get a project started. It also includes brief tutorial on programming in both Visual Basic and C#. If you have programmed in other languages, or you are just starting programming, this will give you just enough knowledge to get started inside Visual Studio.. It covers program structure, some language syntax, and how to best use the Visual Studio make programming tasks easier.
The next three chapters cover creating projects, debugging, and accessing data. While whole books can be written on these subjects, Joe manages to hit the useful high points. Since much time can be spend debugging, understanding the debugging tools is essential for developers new to Visual Studio. Many hours of debugging can be saved by using the built in tools. He explains breakpoints and the useful debugging windows, and give a great walkthrough of using these concepts to track down a bug in a program with bugs.
The next part covers web and windows applications using ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, WPF, and web services.. Again, whole books are written on these subjects. This book works through just enough information to understand how to use each topic, and a sample program for each to illustrate the concept. I, knowing very little about MVC, built the example in the chapter, and found how easy it was to learn.
Finally, enhancing and extending Visual Studio 2010 is covered. Templates, snippets and macro are covered as well as project add-ins.
Overall, I found the book well written, organized, and easy to use. Topics are introduced in a logical order. It is best to read the first seven chapters, and then after that, the chapters you are interested in. If you are interested in web, you can skip the WPF chapter and vice versa. This book is a must have for the entry level developer with little or no experience with Visual Studio. If you are a career developer with little or no Visual Studio experience, this book is a great introduction.

Visual Basic 2010 Unleashed ReviewLet me start by saying that I am Software Architect with over 30 years in the business, and have been through the entire MS suite. MASM, Visual Studio 6, Interdev, VS2003, VS2005, VS2008, VS2010 as well as the mobile side of the MS house - WindowsCE/Platform builder from version 2.11 to Version 5.0. For the most part I use C# as my primary programming language and do the WPF WCF Silverlight EF "thing" on a daily basis. Most of the books I read do a fairly good job on one or two topics, so you're forced to buy multiple books from different authors to cover all the material that you need. Sigh.
I typically buy and read 1 new programming book a month to keep up with the newest technology and features. Since I do some VB.Net programming I figured I would have a look at this book to see what's new. Based on its title, I was expecting just the usual programming basics in a VB paradigm- Classes, Inheritance, Polymorphism, yada yada, yada. Same old dribble. I was pleasantly surprised. The chapters regarding Linq (including PLinq), Tasks, WCF, Parallel Programming, Building and deploying applications to Azure were well thought out and lucid. There are also chapters on writing apps for WPF, Silverlight, and of course the class Winform stuff. All great! Even as a C# coder, I found all of this stuff extremely useful.
I downloaded the code samples that accompany this book. All of the chapters (including the chapters you have to download separately) have code samples as part of fully blown solutions. I took a random look at 10 chapters and made sure the solutions would load, and the code would compile and run. The author gets an A+ here! Everything worked with no problems. Solutions loaded, code compiled without errors and actually ran. How refreshing!
So now for general comments:
Some of the features and code in this book require the user to have something more than VS2010 Express. VS2010 is a little pricey, especially the Ultimate version.
I am not sure why the last 4 chapters (see the book index "Part X') are not published as part of the book. Maybe they were not ready when this book went to press? They have to be downloaded separately. These chapters are
Advanced IDE Features
Introducing the Visual Studio Extensibility
Advanced Analysis Tools
Testing Code with Unit Tests, Test-Driven Development, and Code Contracts
All of these chapters are worth reading.

This book does such an outstanding job covering topics other than the normal language syntax, that a section on Team Foundation Server(TFS) would make this book complete.
Even if VB.Net is not your primary language, this book still has something for anyone working in .NET. It's a keeper.

Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform ReviewAs a speaker and a User Group leader, I often get asked "Where do I start learning .NET?". My answer is always "Start with the Troelsen book from Apress". This has been true for previous versions of the framework, and after reading the latest edition covering .NET 4, it still holds true.
Andrew takes you on the path that covers what the line of business software developer needs to know about the capabilities of .NET. The book begins with pertinent background information on the evolution of .NET, the Common Type System (CTS), the Common Language Runtime (CLR), and tools like ILDASM and Red-Gate's Reflector. Although not the most exiting reading if you are eager to start writing code, it is important for .NET developers to understand these concepts and tools.
Chapter 2 discusses the various tools (including Notepad++) that can be used to develop in C#. The majority of the readers will be using Visual Studio, but it's good to know (and call out) that you do not have to purchase anything to write C# applications!
Parts 2 and 3 take a deep dive into the C# language itself and along the way explains the pillars of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and how to implement them in C# and .NET. This is extremely useful to the reader who does not have OOP experience, but is also useful to those coming from another OO language to learn the specifics in C#.
Andrew does a great job explaining the more advanced topics like Generics, Lambdas, Language Integrated Query (LINQ), Multi-Threading, and (recent additions to the framework) the Dynamic Language Runtime and Parallel Programming.
A chapter on Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows Communication Foundation provide a nice intro to those topics, three chapters on ADO.NET (including the new release of the Entity Framework), and whole sections devoted to Windows Presentation Foundation (used for Windows development) and ASP.NET (used web application development) are the core pieces required for standard line of business development.
I have two disappointments with the book, the first is that the ADO.NET chapters include samples for binding data to Windows Forms (WinForms) and not Windows Presentation Foundation. I firmly believe the future of Windows Client development is WPF (not WinForms), and Andrew echoes this by focusing on WPF in the rest of the text. In fact, WinForms is relegated to an Appendix.
My other disappointment is that the new ASP.NET MVC framework isn't discussed as an alternative to ASP.NET WebForms. There are plenty of books out there on MVC, but what I have really liked about these books is that they have presented all of the relevant options and left it up to the reader to decide which direction.
In summary, this book is massive (weighing in at over 1500 pages), and is still the single place to start learning .NET and C#. I have always used his books on the language to learn all the options available as a developer (and get a decent understanding of those topics), then picked up books that do a deep dive into the specifics (like Matthew McDonald's Pro WPF in C# 2010: Windows Presentation Foundation in .NET 4).Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform Overview
The first edition of this book was released at the 2001 Tech-Ed conference in Atlanta, Georgia. At that time, the .NET platform was still a beta product, and in many ways, so was this book. This is not to say that the early editions of this text did not have merit-after all, the book was a 2002 Jolt Award finalist and it won the 2003 Referenceware Excellence Award. However, over the years that author Andrew Troelsen spent working with the common language runtime (CLR), he gained a much deeper understanding of the .NET platform and the subtleties of the C# programming language, and he feels that this fifth edition of the book is as close to a "final release” as he's come yet.

This new edition has been comprehensively revised and rewritten to make it accurately reflect the C# 4 language specification for the .NET 4 platform. You'll find new chapters covering the important concepts of dynamic lookups, named and optional arguments, Parallel LINQ (PLINQ), improved COM interop, and variance for generics.

If you're checking out this book for the first time, do understand that it's targeted at experienced software professionals and/or graduate students of computer science (so don't expect three chapters on iteration or decision constructs!). The mission of this text is to provide you with a rock-solid foundation in the C# programming language and the core aspects of the .NET platform (assemblies, remoting, Windows Forms, Web Forms, ADO.NET, XML web services, etc.). Once you digest the information presented in these 25 chapters, you'll be in a perfect position to apply this knowledge to your specific programming assignments, and you'll be well equipped to explore the .NET universe on your own terms.

What you'll learn
Be the first to understand the .NET 4 platform and Visual C# 2010.
Discover the ins and outs of the leading .NET technology.

Professional Visual Studio 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI've been using Visual Studio for development for as long as .NET has been around,
I've had no problem getting code written, compiled and debugged.
In the back of my mind I knew that Visual Studio had a heap of features and
would often see a presenter press a button here, or change a setting there,
and would think that one day I'll spend some time digging deeper into Visual Studio.
With the release of 2010, Visual Studio is bigger than ever, and I'm really glad that
I choose this book as my tour guide.
I was a bit arrogant to think that I could learn all the features of Visual Studio without
this book, it took 4 authors (and it's not a little book at all), to cover Visual Studio 2010.
Any full time developer who hasn't read a book on Visual Studio, now's about time you did,
and I recommend this tome(did I mention its not a little book?!).
Professional Visual Studio 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewA must-have guide that covers all the new features of Visual Studio 2010
Visual Studio allows you to create and manage programming projects for the Windows platform, and the new 2010 version has undergone a major overhaul comprised of significant changes. Written by an author team of veteran programmers and developers, Professional Visual Studio 2010 gets you quickly up to speed on what you can expect from the newest version of Visual Studio.

This book's first section is dedicated to familiarizing you with the core aspects of Visual Studio 2010. Everything you need is contained in the first five chapters, from the IDE structure and layout to the various options and settings you can change to make the user interface synchronize with your own way of doing things.

From there, the remainder of the book is broken into 11 parts:

Getting Started: In this part, you learn how to take control of your projects and organize them in ways that work with your own style.
Digging Deeper: Though the many graphical components of Visual Studio that make a programmer's job easier are discussed in many places throughout this book, you often need help when you're in the process of actually writing code. This part deals with features that support the coding of applications such as IntelliSense, code refactoring, and creating and running unit tests In the latest version of the .NET framework, enhancements were added to support dynamic languages and move towards feature parity between the two primary .NET languages, C# and VB. This part covers changes to these languages, as well as looking at a range of features that will help you write better and more consistent code.
Rich Client and Web Applications: For support building everything from Office add-ins to cloud applications, Visual Studio enables you to develop applications for a wide range of platforms. These two parts cover the application platforms that are supported within Visual Studio 2010, including ASP.NET and Office, WPF, Silverlight 2 and ASP.NET MVC.
Data: A large proportion of applications use some form of data storage. Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework include strong support for working with databases and other data sources. This part examines how to use DataSets, the Visual Database Tools, LINQ, Synchronization Services and ADO.NET Entity Framework to build applications that work with data. It also shows you how you can then present this data using Reporting.
Application Services: Through the course of building an application you are likely to require access to services that may or may not reside within your organization. This part covers core technologies such as WCF, WF, Synchronization Services and WCF RIA services that you can use to connect to these services.
Configuration and Internationalization: The built-in support for configuration files allows you to adjust the way an application functions on the fly without having to rebuild it. Furthermore, resource files can be used to both access static data and easily localize an application into foreign languages and cultures. This part of the book shows how to use .NET configuration and resource files.
Debugging: Application debugging is one of the more challenging tasks developers have to tackle, but correct use of the Visual Studio 2010 debugging features will help you analyze the state of the application and determine the cause of any bugs. This part examines the rich debugging support provided by the IDE.
Build and Deployment: In addition to discussing how to build your solutions effectively and getting applications into the hands of your end users, this part also deals with the process of upgrading your projects from previous versions.
Customizing and Extending Visual Studio: If the functionality found in the previous part isn't enough to help you in your coding efforts, Microsoft has made Visual Studio 2010 even more extensible. This part covers the automation model, how to write add-ins and macros, and then how to use a new extensibility framework, MEF, to extend Visual Studio 2010.
Visual Studio Ultimate: The final part of the book examines the additional features only available in the Premium and Ultimate versions of Visual Studio 2010. In addition, you'll also learn how the Team Foundation Server provides an essential tool for managing software projects.

Though this breakdown of the Visual Studio feature set provides the most logical and easily understood set of topics, you may need to look for specific functions that will aid you in a particular activity. To address this need, references to appropriate chapters are provided whenever a feature is covered in more detail elsewhere in the book.

Professional Visual Studio 2010 is for all developers new to Visual Studio as well as those programmers who have some experience but want to learn about features they may have previously overlooked.

If you are familiar with the way previous versions of Visual Studio worked, you may want to skim over Part I, which deals with the basic constructs that make up the user interface, and move on to the remainder of the book where the new features found in Visual Studio 2010 are discussed in detail. While you may be familiar with most of Part I, it is worth reading this section in case there are features of Visual Studio 2010 that you haven't seen or used before.

If you're just starting out, you'll greatly benefit from the first part, where basic concepts are explained and you're introduced to the user interface and how to customize it to suit your own style.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 Six-in-One (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book is an awesome survey that does Wrox and the entire .Net community proud. The quality and professionalism are exemplary. The low price is an amazing value!
Since technology is changing so quickly, survey books have much to offer in the way of imparting a great high level view of the entire .Net landscape while requiring the least amount of time on the part of the reader. Survey books also serve as a solid foundation on which to build deeper study.
This book leverages the wisdom of "many hands make light the work" by recruiting top notch domain experts for each topic. I hope more industry related technology books will follow this lead because utilizing lots of authors prevents the reader from picking up the limitations and biases that can (potentially) come from a smaller set of authors, and it also imposes less stress on a group of authors by not forcing overreach.
The book walks readers through the evolution of .Net technologies, which provides beneficial context. This information is also useful to those using legacy versions of .Net technologies.
My favorite part is the F# section, which is delightfully concise and accessible, yet doesn't skirt advanced topics like computation expressions, asynchronous workflows, and CPS (continuation passing style). The F# presentation is extremely important to all .Net programmers because many of the latest trends in C# and .Net are coming directly out of F# and functional programming (i.e. generics, LINQ, lambda functions, etc.). It is very pedagogical to see these concepts in a natively functional language like F#; they can then be leveraged from other technologies.

Programming Visual Basic 2008: Build .NET 3.5 Applications with Microsoft's RAD Tool for Business ReviewThis would be a great book, but for two things . . . 1. The worst was, I got to page 332, then realized that the next page was 359! I want my missing 27 pages! 2. The author's attempts at humor are just plain lame, because they distract from the content. You are in the middle of reading a sentence, and within that content, he throws in some off-the-wall comment . . . it was irritating, when you are trying to follow the flow of information. That said, there is some pretty good information in the book, otherwise, I would have considered it trash.Programming Visual Basic 2008: Build .NET 3.5 Applications with Microsoft's RAD Tool for Business Overview
Ever since Visual Basic was merged into .NET, it's become the core language for creating business applications with Windows. The latest version, VB 2008, is even more useful -- and provides even more incentive for migrating from VB 6. All it lacks is a good book on how to harness its power. Programming Visual Basic 2008 fills the void. Written in a lively and engaging style by a developer who's grown up with Visual Basic, including both VB 6 and VB .NET, this hands-on guide addresses the core topics of the new VB, from basic to complex, with plenty of code examples.Programming Visual Basic 2008 also examines .NET programming from the application level with a chapter-by-chapter plan for developing, documenting, and deploying a full data-driven application. You learn, step-by-step, how to build and deploy a library management system, complete with patron, inventory, and barcode support. The book's broad range of topics include:

VB language and its syntax
An overview of the .NET Framework
Object-oriented development in VB and .NET
Generic objects, collections, and nullable types
Design and management of software projects
Integrating desktop features with Windows Forms
Database design with SQL Server 2008
Database interface design with ADO.NET
The new LINQ feature, and how to use it within VB and .NET
Embedding XML within application source code
Encryption and authentication in .NET
Interacting with data stored in files and directories
Web development using ASP.NET
Deploying an application to a user's workstation
And much more

Programming Visual Basic 2008 is ideal for VB 6 programmers who are ready to move to .NET, as well as VB.NET programmers who wish to improve their project-focused software development skills. Programming novices and developers coming from other languages will find the book valuable because of its language instruction and project design knowledge. Once you finish the book, you will have a firm grasp of VB 2008's core concepts and language elements, and understand how to build VB projects as they were intended -- as complete, cohesive solutions.

Visual Studio Hacks: Tips & Tools for Turbocharging the IDE ReviewVisual Studio Hacks offers the reader 100 tips related to the Microsoft Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE). This book covers topics on versions of the software including Visual Studio 2005. Mr. Avery has selected a good compliment of topics. While not all of the hacks will be of interest to all developers, I think there is enough content in here for all levels of Visual Studio users. The typical items such as IDE setup, keyboard shortcuts, macros, and enhancing the tool are covered. However, this book also provides guidance on how to use and integrate the necessary tools to support a complete developer build cycle. Topics such as unit testing, debugging, profiling, code analysis, automating builds, and documenting source code are covered.
Visual Studio is one of the most productive development IDEs that I have worked with, in my experience. There are so many features that it takes a text like this to make you appreciate it. It is much more interesting to read a format such as this, instead of stepping through the product documentation, page by page, looking for nuggets of value.
I highly recommend this book. I believe that it is a must-have companion for Visual Studio. Anyone that is establishing their project's IDE guidelines for their development team would be well-served by the material covered in this book. What a way to impress your boss.Visual Studio Hacks: Tips & Tools for Turbocharging the IDE Overview
With start-up templates for projects ranging from Windows applications to web services, and extensive help and on-line documentation, Visual Studio .NET might be mistaken for a tool for unsophisticated users. It's true that most developers soon discover that the basic operation of Visual Studio is fairly self-explanatory; less obvious are some of the suite's more advanced built-in features.

Visual Studio .Net includes a wealth of little-used capabilities, is very customizable, has a complete automation model, and much more. On top of its regular feature set, there are hosts of free add-ins, macros, and power toys that can further enhance the functionality of Visual Studio. This book is all about exploring these things, and in doing so, becoming a better and more efficient developer.Developers will learn how to:

Get the most out of projects and solutions, including getting down and dirty with the undocumented format of project and solution files
Use these editor features to the fullest, and add additional functionality to the editor through the use of third-party add-ins
Learn smarter ways to navigate the application and your own source code
Customize shortcut keys, toolbars, menus, the toolbox, and much more
Use the debugger successfully not only on your source code, but with T-SQL and scripting languages as well
Automatically generate code
Learn how the servercan be used to interface with databases, services, and performance counters, as well as WMI
Use and create Visual Studio add-ins to extend its functionality
Offering valuable tips, tools, and tricks, Visual Studio Hacks takes you far beyond the suite's usual capabilities. You can read this book from cover to cover or, because each hack stands its own, you can feel free to browse and jump to the different sections that interest you most. If there's a prerequisite you need to know about, a cross-reference will guide you to the right hack.
If you want to experience the full spectrum of Visual Studio's functionality and flexibility, you'll find the perfect guide for exploration in Visual Studio Hacks. Once the final page is turned, you can confidently say that you've been exposed to everything that Visual Studio .NET is capable of doing.
