Visual Basic .NET Bible ReviewI guess that I am the exception here, since everyone else seems to love this book. I thought that the book was not very well put together. Let me give you some concrete examples:
First, I think that it has already been said that this book does not have enough OOP. That is probably true. I have been doing OOP for so long that I didn't miss the omission, but it might be a little frustrating for a novice.
There are also a lot of little things that I noticed. Much of the book seems to be a reprinting of the .NET SDK documentation. Another thing that bothered me quite a bit is that in their tables that list the methods of classes, they didn't list the return values of the methods. This may seem like a little thing, but it meant that I had to go look everything up in the SDK anyway, so after a while I ditched the book and just used the SDK.
Another thing that I noticed was some incorrect terminology. As an example, Mr. Beres refers to the System.IO.Directory class as a "static" class. I knew what he meant, because I am also a Java programmer, but that terminology is not used in VB.NET. That could be very confusing because there is no such thing as a static class in VB.NET. VB used to support static methods, but static in this sense meant something completely different than what Mr. Beres is trying to express. I believe that he meant that the class consists only of Shared methods, not that it is a static class.
Again, I don't mean to nitpick here, because there were some good things, too. I have also written books for a competing publisher, so I know how hard it is to get everything just right (trust me folks, its not as easy as it looks!), and the authors have done an admirable job. Visual Basic .NET All in One Desk Reference for Dummies Reviewhi
well I have tons of "for dummies" books(from spiritual to graphics and programming and the like) and this is the first that isn't good.
problems:
just some i'll like to mention.
-the author writes code for you to copy and doesnt include the "_" between the lines (other manuals/tutorials/books at least tell u to put "_" , since they dont have space to write the full code in one line), so if you go by his code format you will keep getting errors.
-on one hand the author seems to write nothing about certain vb.net code and on the other hand he writes tons about the difference between vb6 and vb.net.
he devotes tons of the book on stuff that is new to vb.net compared to vb6, while not actaully describing vb.net stuff in the first place.
in conclusion:

Office and SharePoint 2010 User's Guide: Integrating SharePoint with Excel, Outlook, Access and Word (Expert's Voice in Office and Sharepoint) ReviewI early purchased this book, not so much based on past experience but because it was one of the first advertised.
As long as you understand up front that it is a very high level book for beginners you will be OK. I have several years experience working with the 2003, and 2007 versions and have worked with 2010 since beta.
In particular I was interested in Document Sets, a brilliant and much needed document management tool. I'm sorry to report that the book really didn't do justice to the subject. It did reference them several times and there were a few nuggets, but overall too light.
It reads well and is fairly well organized.
I honestly have not used the Office 2010 portion of the book at all so I won't say anything more on the subject.
If you are looking for user level help with SharePoint 2010, get the Shepard's Guide instead. However it contains very broad infomation that is not tested. The test is entirely scenario/case based (every question) and you must know how to implement SharePoint's features to design a solution to meet the business case being presented. The test does not allow you to review your answers. Once answered, you are commited to it. If you are an experienced IT pro you'll find that fully 85% of the material in this text is "filler", (i.e., you already know what a processor is and that you need routers and switches to connect computers togehter) that does not provide the needed background information to know when or how you would use a given SharePoint feature to meet the criteria of the scenario you'll be asked to meet. The 15% of the remaining material is of value, particulalry the exercises. Here is how you pass 70-668: a. Work the exercises in this text until you can explain to someone else why doing what the exercise calls for is being done. b. Go through every feature (yes, every single one) of SharePoint 2010 and pull it's related technet article to know how/when to use it. You don't need to know specific configuration steps - that's what exam 70-667 is about. Example - be able to explain when you'd use a site vs a web page to meet a given scenario, not how to create one. Good luck.
