The Rational Guide to Building SharePoint Web Parts (Rational Guides) ReviewOverall it provides a very good quick start to writing web parts. My one gripe is that they include "Bonus Material" that can be downloaded when you register your book with them (ie: give them all your personal information) such as chapters on "Using the WPPackager Application" and "Using External Resources". Just what I want, to print out material to stick in my book. It makes sense to have the examples and sample web parts available for download but chapters of the book should be published with the book!!!
I had hoped this would be more like an O'Rielly Nutshell book which are generally short on blah blah and long on reference material. Unfortunately it gets verbose in many places and only provides reference to the most commonly used objects, methods, and properties.

Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2003 Solutions ReviewI bought Scot's book hot off the presses, since it's the first major SharePoint 2003 book. When I got it, I breezed through it, and I'll be honest - I was unimpressed.
Well, I had reason to browse through it again, and this time I just sat down and started reading it. That's when I realized - certain book publishers that use multiple authors had taught me not to bother reading computer books through, as they were so disjointed they worked better as technical manuals. So that's what I'm used to - being able to flip a few pages and find the thing I'm looking for.
Scot's book is different. It harkens back to a day where you could actually read through a book and learn a new technology in a structured manner. If you take the time to read the book from start to finish (it doesn't take long - if you skim the tutorials you can probably get through most of it in a single evening) it's a good thorough introduction to SharePoint. And I mean thorough - there are tutorials on building web parts, working with page templates, creating data views in FrontPage, integrating Windows Single Signon...
(Incidentally, I'm not trying to cast aspersion on one method of publishing over another - I'm simply trying to indicate the different "reading philosophies" each may require)
He also has a nice walkthrough for creating a new portal from the ground up - laying out areas, sites, as well as explaining users and groups.
All in all, I give this book a healthy thumb's up for anyone who wants to learn SharePoint admin and development - for the first book out of the gate, it's an excellent reference to have.

Essential SharePoint 2007 ReviewBeing a SharePoint architect, I always get asked by clients and end users for resources/books to learn SharePoint functionality. The users don't want to know the gritty programming details, but want to know the functionality at a high level so that they can use the portal to its potential. I have always had a tough time recommending to clients a good book....but now with this book, I feel comfortable as well as confident that clients would feel at home reading this book.
The book talks about what collaboration is and how to implement a successful portal. From an end-user perspective it goes through all the out of the box functionality which is available and which can be implemented without writing a single line of code. The search functionality of MOSS has been very well explained. End users can very easily implement out-of-the-box workflows. The publishing features are very clearly explained.
Overall, I am very pleased with the book. Bear in mind the audience for this book is not a developer. Its mainly for the business/end-user community.

Office and SharePoint 2010 User's Guide: Integrating SharePoint with Excel, Outlook, Access and Word (Expert's Voice in Office and Sharepoint) ReviewI early purchased this book, not so much based on past experience but because it was one of the first advertised.
As long as you understand up front that it is a very high level book for beginners you will be OK. I have several years experience working with the 2003, and 2007 versions and have worked with 2010 since beta.
In particular I was interested in Document Sets, a brilliant and much needed document management tool. I'm sorry to report that the book really didn't do justice to the subject. It did reference them several times and there were a few nuggets, but overall too light.
It reads well and is fairly well organized.
I honestly have not used the Office 2010 portion of the book at all so I won't say anything more on the subject.
If you are looking for user level help with SharePoint 2010, get the Shepard's Guide instead. Designing Forms for Microsoft Office InfoPath and Forms Services 2007 ReviewAs XML has become the industry standard, Microsoft has increasingly oriented its Office suite to use it. The latest result is this enhanced InfoPath, in its 2007 incarnation. The book is divided into two parts. Each targeting a different audience.
The first part is aimed at a general purpose Office user, who is not assumed to be a programmer. It addresses what is a problem plaguing XML. If you want to make a new XML schema to use as a template for future data instances, you often have to write the explicit XML tags. Unfortunately, the syntax can be overwhelming to many. Plus, explicitly writing the tags is extremely error prone. What InfoPath has done is make an easy to use graphical front end. Far friendlier to the user. This user interface then can generate a schema in a robust fashion. Even people capable of editing schemas directly might still want to use what Microsoft has provided.
Along these lines, chapter 5 is a good example. While not perhaps directly concerning schema, it tackles the problem of validating what the user types into a form. It follows the approach that you should clean up your data as early as possible. Preferably before it even gets into the database. The UI lets you impose constraints on the user input into various fields of your form, by offering dialog windows with many options.

The book is good at giving overviews of features in SharePoint 2007 and the pictures are a plus. However, this book does not go into enought detail on topics a SharePoint site administrator should really know. For example, I can NOT find anything here on how to utilize the Gannt view list for projects. There is also no information on how to create and utilize KPI (Key Performance Indicator) list templates! The book only glosses over the definition and does not go into further detail. At the sametime, it goes into detail about including images and flash animations by adding HTML codes; something meant for very advanced users. There is no user level consistency in this book which is truly disappointing. I have found more answers by experimenting on SharePoint myself than through this book. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration: Real World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond (Exam 70-668) ReviewI passed exam 70-668 three weeks ago using this text as part of my prep material. However it contains very broad infomation that is not tested. The test is entirely scenario/case based (every question) and you must know how to implement SharePoint's features to design a solution to meet the business case being presented. The test does not allow you to review your answers. Once answered, you are commited to it. If you are an experienced IT pro you'll find that fully 85% of the material in this text is "filler", (i.e., you already know what a processor is and that you need routers and switches to connect computers togehter) that does not provide the needed background information to know when or how you would use a given SharePoint feature to meet the criteria of the scenario you'll be asked to meet. The 15% of the remaining material is of value, particulalry the exercises. Here is how you pass 70-668: a. Work the exercises in this text until you can explain to someone else why doing what the exercise calls for is being done. b. Go through every feature (yes, every single one) of SharePoint 2010 and pull it's related technet article to know how/when to use it. You don't need to know specific configuration steps - that's what exam 70-667 is about. Example - be able to explain when you'd use a site vs a web page to meet a given scenario, not how to create one. Good luck.

Professional Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Workflow Programming ReviewI was looking for a book that satisfied 4 criteria: 1. Must be SharePoint 2007. 2. Must have a large section about custom workflows. 3. Must be written with Visual Studio 2008 in mind. 4. Must be able to answer the questions I needed answer to.
Had I found this book when I was just starting off with custom workflows, I would have been elated! The author has some really good bits of information and he did indeed answer the questions I needed answers to.
The downside of this book is that it is filled with lots of "fluff". Code snippets were repeated over and over and sections of text seemed to be cut from one section of the book and pasted into another.
He also goes into detail about how the Windows workflow API would be coded when, in Visual Studio with SharePoint extensions, you just drag and drop a control and it writes the required code for you. I'm sure there are those who want to know every detail about how the controls work, but I am not one of those. Interestingly, he delved deeply into the API, but skipped over setting up the environment (VS2008). It would have been nice to see how he structured the projects in VS 2008 since the layout is completely different from VS 2005.
Of the almost 600 pages, probably 250 of those were useful. I would recommend this book to those working with custom workflows, especially to those just starting off with them. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Best Practices ReviewWhen deploying SharePoint, it is critical to plan for not only what you need now, but for how it will grow and scale down the road, especially when Document Management is involved. If you don't plan adequately for searchability, scalability, or disaster recovery, you can easily run into problems.
One criticism I have had of many SharePoint books is that they are written from a technical perspective and explain how to install and configure SharePoint, but they gloss over the critical planning stages or the best practices for scalability.
As the name of this book indicates, this is a very thorough guide covering the best practices for planning, deploying, optimizing, and organizing SharePoint. This book is not necessarily intended to give you step-by-step instructions for installing SharePoint, but rather cover the full lifecycle of a SharePoint deployment and give you best practice recommendations. The layout and organization of the book is very logical, making it easy to quickly find what you are looking for. It covers both Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and MOSS 2007.It is written to be accessible by anyone on a team evaluating or implementing SharePoint, or anyone who just wants to learn more about it.
The book is broken into the following sections:
Introduction--includes an overview of the various SharePoint Technologies, how to determine which you need, and how SharePoint will help your business.
Part I--Planning--This is not just about planning for the IT infrastructure, but more about planning for the impact that SharePoint will have on your organization, such as dealing with push-back from users after moving away from shared folders to SharePoint document libraries and breaking down departmental "information kingdoms."
Part II--Building--This section gets into best practices for building your environment, including content management strategies, the role of custom development, and dev and test environments, including replication of content between environments.
Part III--Deploying--This section has a great discussion about organizing your content and search/crawling strategy to optimize searchability for your content, security of content, business intelligence, and intranet/extranet/internet deployment scenarios.
Part IV--Operating--This section has great tips on availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and performance monitoring.
What I appreciated most about this book is it is very readable and does not include a lot of "fluff," just straightforward best practices. For example, in Chapter 8, the section on should SharePoint replace file servers is very straightforward about the limitation of SharePoint and when file servers should still be used.
If you are someone new to SharePoint or a System Administrator charged with deploying SharePoint, this book may leave you wanting more--it is not designed to be a how-to book; however, it does include many good recommendations for additional resources.
