Microsoft® .NET Development for Microsoft Office (Pro-Developer) ReviewThere is a ton of misleading and confusing information on the web regarding what technologies you can use to develop against specific versions of Office. This book gives you all the practical advice you need to hit the ground running with managed COM development in Office. From a thorough introduction of the technologies available and their pros and cons, to very specific examples that show workarounds to common problems such as using custom icons in a toolbar that you add programmatically, how to use a C++ shim to sign your .NET add-on and make sure that you won't run into security issues in strict corporate environments, etc. If you are starting out with managed COM development on the Office platform then this is the book you absolutely need. We bought this book to use on a team project and it was so good that I picked up a copy for personal use at home.
The book does assume that you are a relatively experienced programmer. If you are interested in using Visual Studio Tools for Office instead of COM, then you should check out Eric Carter's Visual Studio Tools for Office instead but be aware that you can only target Office 2003+ using VSTO. You need to use COM, not VSTO, in order to target older versions of Office.Microsoft® .NET Development for Microsoft Office (Pro-Developer) Overview
Create Microsoft Office-based applications that work seamlessly in the Microsoft .NET environment-with this essential reference from Microsoft developer Andrew Whitechapel. The author provides expert advice on the various approaches you can use to build managed solutions with Office, and gives practical guidance on the most viable techniques for technical and business scenarios. You'll begin building custom .NET-based applications with detailed, practical exercises that take you through solutions from beginning to end. Andrew shares tactics, strategies, and best practices-plus full sample code-to help you maximize your development efforts. Packed with the same information used by Microsoft's Product Support Services team, this book is the one reference that every Office and .NET developer should have.

Discover how to:

Develop powerful .NET solutions for Office with managed interop assemblies
Integrate managed code with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
Create custom commands and functionality with managed COM and Automation add-ins
Build custom Office features with external data using Web services, .NET remoting, and research services
Use Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office to create document-centric solutions for Microsoft Excel and Word
Use digital signatures, strong-naming and .NET Code Access Security
Control Office applications using Platform Invoke, Reflection, drag-and-drop, and the IAccessible interface
Develop managed Smart Tags and managed Smart Document solutions

Covers Microsoft Office 97, Office 2000, Office XP, and Microsoft Office System 2003 Editions

Excel 97 Bible ReviewIn the section where I work, everyone uses Excel, but outside of entering data and applying a couple of formulas / formats, they are generally clueless as to Excel 97's power. Just two weeks of toying with different things listed in this bible have made me the department guru!
As others have mentioned, talk of VBA is short here, but Walkenbach (a tremendous writer) has a VBA for Excel 2000 book out (not a bible) that looks to cover VBA for Excel 97 as well, so I am looking to purchase that next. Bibles are cool - Wife has the Access Bible, and that one rules, too.Excel 97 Bible OverviewExcel 97 has finally arrived, putting in your hands more and better features than ever before. Microsoft Office Excel 2007: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning ReviewJacobs takes a beginner to Excel on a short course that quickly gives useful mastery of the basics. You needn't have used any spreadsheet in the past. The concept of a spreadsheet is easily explained, along with nice features of Excel. Like being able to read various file types, including the ever-present CSV (comma separated value) and PDF. Excel prefers its own XLS format in which you'll be storing most of your spreadsheets.
Data input into worksheets is shown. Then more advanced stuff, like connecting various cells in a formulaic manner. It is this which really distinguishes a computer spreadsheet from simple tabular data. What the book teaches is that being able to writing formulas is the key skill to using Excel. (Actually any spreadsheet, but here we're talking about Excel 2007.) If you want to focus on mastering one aspect of Excel, it should be here. For one thing, by linking cells this way, you can "role play" various scenarios, by changing a cell's values and seeing the effect ripple through a table.
The book does go on to discuss other important topics. Including various ways to display data, like scatterplots and pie graphs. The visuals are significant in their own right. Because people can often grasp a graph quicker than a table of numbers.Microsoft Office Excel 2007: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning OverviewGet on the fast track to mastering Excel

Excel 2007 Advanced Report Development ReviewI used this text in my CIS 2640 Business Reports and Analysis class at WMU in Spring 2008. It's a great text for learning Advanced Sklills with Pivot Tables in particular with Excel. There ar elots of diagrams, and the author attempts to make the book seem personable and familiar, not dry and technical. There is lots of support for this book, and excercises you can do on the publishers website, and files to download in concordance with the text. The only drawback is if you have Windows Vista, as this text is designed for Windows XP OS, even though it uses Office 2007. Otherwise, very straightforward, with no advanced knowledge of Excel necessary.Excel 2007 Advanced Report Development OverviewCreate powerful, innovative reporting solutions with Excel 2007! With this new book, which is significantly updated from the bestselling Excel 2003 version, author Timothy Zapawa provides you with in-depth coverage of Excel 2007's enhanced reporting capabilities. Discover what you can do with PivotTable and Spreadsheet reports, enhanced conditional formatting and filtering functions, improved data access and management tools, and expanded OLAP features. With notes, tips, warnings, real-world examples, and how-to videos in every chapter, you'll soon be an expert on Excel report development!

Pivot Table Data Crunching: Microsoft Excel 2010 (MrExcel Library) ReviewReally good book on Pivot Tables. Pivot table commands have changed quite a bit since Excel 97-2003 so I would suggest to buy a prior edition of this book if you aren't moving to Office 2010.Pivot Table Data Crunching: Microsoft Excel 2010 (MrExcel Library) OverviewPivotTables may be Excel's most powerful feature, but Microsoft has estimated that only 15% of Excel users take advantage of them. That's because PivotTables (and their companion feature, PivotCharts) have a reputation for being difficult to learn. Not any more! In this book, Excel legends Bill Jelen ("MrExcel") and Michael Alexander teach PivotTables and PivotCharts step-by-step, using realistic business scenarios that any Excel user can intuitively understand. Jelen and Alexander go far beyond merely explaining PivotTables and PivotCharts: they present practical "recipes" for solving a wide range of business problems. Drawing on more than 30 combined years of Excel experience, they provide tips and tricks you won't find anywhere else, and show exactly how to sidestep common mistakes. Coverage includes: " Creating PivotTables, customizing them, and changing the way you view them " Performing calculations within PivotTables " Using PivotCharts and other visualizations " Analyzing multiple data sources with PivotTables " Sharing PivotTables with others " Working with and analyzing OLAP data " Making the most of Excel 2010's powerful new PowerPivot feature " Using Excel 2010's Slicer to dynamically filter PivotTables " Enhancing PivotTables with macros and VBA code This book is part of the new MrExcel Library series, edited by Bill Jelen, world-renowned Excel expert and host of the enormously popular Excel help site, MrExcel.com. Teaches PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Excel 2010's new PowerPivot feature through real-world scenarios that make intuitive sense to users at all levels Includes proven PivotTable recipes for instant on-the-job results Helps Excel users avoid common pitfalls and mistakes Part of the brand-new MrExcel Library series, edited by Excel legend Bill Jelen

Business Analysis: Microsoft Excel 2010 (MrExcel Library) ReviewThis book is different from other Excel books I've read. The usual approach is to explain what Excel can do and how to do it. This unusual approach reverses the process, identifying business problem and processes, then showing how Excel can help to do the job.
There are four sections: Analyzing Financial Statements, Financial Planning and Control, Investment Decisions and Sales and Marketing. Each section takes a business process, explaining it for those not familiar with it, then showing how Excel can help to eliminate work or illustrate information that might not have been evident.
For example, the first section deals with Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Inventories, Cash Flow and Ratios. In each case, the author shows what Excel can do to make your life easier.
The book uses Excel 2010 as its basis, but mentions how a process might be different when using an earlier version of Excel. Actually, very little reference is made to the tabs present in both Excel 2007 and 2010. Rather, the method of preparing the object at hand is the focus.
The Financial Planning and Control section covers Budgeting and Planning in some depth. The Forecasting chapter explains how the various estimation methods available in Excel differ and the situations in which might be used. The author discusses moving average forecasts, regression and smoothing with Excel's functions. He even covers the concept of Box-Jenkins methods, although the subject is too extensive to cover in this book.
Another interesting chapter is Measuring Quality, which delves into the subject of sampling using various statistical methods.
Statistics comes up again in the Making Investment Decision Under Uncertain Conditions. Here the author covers using standard deviation, confidence intervals and regression analysis.
The book is filled with screen shots of Excel applying the ideas in the text. This gives you a good idea of how to apply the ideas to your own work.
The book includes a helpful glossary and a useful index.
This is a great book for one in business who is familiar with Excel and wants to use it to improve the company's analysis and operations.Business Analysis: Microsoft Excel 2010 (MrExcel Library) OverviewANSWER KEY BUSINESS QUESTIONSCONTROL COMPANY FINANCESFORECAST SALESPREPARE BUSINESS CASESMAKE BETTER INVESTMENT DECISIONSIMPROVE QUALITYUSE EXCEL 2010 TO GAIN DEEPER INSIGHTS, MAKE SMARTER DECISIONS, AND EARN MORE PROFITSUsing real-world examples, Carlberg helps you put Excel's features and functions to work and get the power of quantitative analysis behind your management decisions.Excel expert Conrad Carlberg shows how to use Excel 2010 to perform the core financial tasks every manager and entrepreneur must master: analyzing statements, planning and controlling company finances, making investment decisions, and managing sales and marketing. Pivot Table Data Crunching for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 ReviewPivot Tables are one of the most powerful yet least used features of Excel. The author's MrExcel web site conducted a survey that showed that less than 42% of Excell users make use of pivot tables. I believe his estimate is high. Only experts are likely to visit his web site. I don't believe that 42% of the people who use Excel have even heard of pivot tables.
I further think that part of the problem is the name Pivot Table. This is primarily a Microsoft term (Microsoft has trademarked the word PivotTable - with no space), but the original functionality came from Lotus Improv.
It's foolish for me to try to explain pivot tables here when the book exists. Let me just say that if your task involves taking a lot of data that would make a lot more sense to you or your boss if it were summarized in various ways, Pivot Tables are for you, and the authors of this book are recognized experts in the field.
Note that the book has been brought up to date to cover Excel 2007. There are a number of changes in 2007 that are distinct improvements over previous versions but that require you to do things that are a bit different while the overall functionality remains basically the same.Pivot Table Data Crunching for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 OverviewThis book consolidates all the best functionality of pivot tables into one guide that provides you with a meaningful tutorial, offering practical solutions to day-to-day problems.Within just the first 2 chapters, you will be creating basic pivot tables, increasing productivity, and producing reports in minutes instead of hours.Within the first 6 chapters, you will learn how to use pivot tables to quickly highlight your top 10 customers or bottom 5 products in profitability; quickly create analysis comparing sales this period to last period by product or region or both; easily summarize daily transactional data by month or quarter or year in a few mouse clicks–all without knowing any formulas!By the end of the book, you will truly be a pivot table guru, automating pivot tables using VBA, creating pivot tables with external data in OLAP cubes, and even creating dynamic reporting systems so that your managers can answer their own queries with a few mouse clicks.• Take advantage of the numerous pivot table recipes• Create powerful summary reports in seconds• Build ad-hoc query tools with ease• Enhance your Executive Reporting• Filter reports to top 10 customers or products• Add dynamic charts to reports• Quickly summarize daily data by month, quarter, or yearIntroduction . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Pivot Table Fundamentals . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .112 Creating a Basic Pivot Table . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .213 Customizing a Pivot Table . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .454 Controlling the Way You View Your Pivot Data . . . . . . . . . . . .835 Performing Calculations Within Your Pivot Tables . . . . . . . . 1176 Using Pivot Charts and Other Visualizations . . . . . . . . . . . . .1417 Analyzing Disparate Data Sources with Pivot Tables . . . . . . 1678 Sharing Pivot Tables with Others . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1899 Working with and Analyzing OLAP Data . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20110 Enhancing Your Pivot Table Reports with Macros . . . . . . . . .21511 Using VBA to Create Pivot Tables . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 23112 Common Pivot Table Issues and Questions . . . . . . . . . . . . . .291A Finding Pivot Table Commands on the Ribbon . . . . . . . . . . . .315

Learn Excel 2007 Expert Skills with The Smart Method: Courseware Tutorial teaching Advanced Techniques ReviewThe Expert Skills book picks up where the Essential Skills book left off and is the perfect follow-up book in this series. If you've used the Essential Skills book to learn how to do day-to-day stuff in Excel 2007 like a professional, the feel of the Expert book will be very familiar to you. Everything I liked about the first book has been carried into this book: from the intuitive layout of the lessons to the well thought-out sample problem files. Of course the content is different, and this book does a great job of walking readers through the maze of advanced features found in Excel. In fact, the book taught me some formulas and methods that are difficult to find any other places (I looked).
However, this book is not an encyclopedia of each and every feature in Excel, but I wouldn't really want to pay for a book like that anyway ... that's what Excel Help (F1) is for, which is free! This book is much more useful than that. Rather this book is a collection of tutorials and sample spreadsheets that build upon each other so that when you got to the end, you know how to do everything because you've done it yourself in Excel.
I should also mention here that I'm an Excel instructor, and though I knew how to do much of the stuff in here before I started, I still love this book. What's more, my students have purchased this book and they they really like it too. To me, that's the best sign of a great tutorial book: one that both instructors and students choose to use and re-use and re-use again. And the increase in my excel efficiencies has given me a very high return on my investment in this book.Learn Excel 2007 Expert Skills with The Smart Method: Courseware Tutorial teaching Advanced Techniques Overview

Excel 2003 Bible ReviewI usually avoid books about Microsoft software because I can usually muddle through and figure out what I want to do. If in doubt, I seek out a twelve-year-old who knows the answers. But this week I had a desire to create a unique chart for a client, and decided to see if Excel would help me make the chart. I had the good fortune to run across Excel 2003 Bible at the library, and took it home to skim. Within 45 minutes I had all the answers to my questions, and found a way to create a better chart than I had originally planned to make. That was well worth my time. I'm sure that I would never have found the alternatives on my own that the book pointed me to.
Intrigued by the help I got, I went back and read the simple sections as well. I was impressed by how thorough all of the material is. You are given many different ways to accomplish the same task, along with the pros and cons of why to go one way versus another. I also appreciated the many graphics in the book to show what the screens look like.
The book is also backed up with a CD to run simulations and a web site where you can get more help.
If you think you may ever want to do advanced applications of Excel, I strongly encourage you to read this book. I particularly liked the charting and analysis sections.
As I finished this book, I realized that I usually employ Excel to get tasks done faster . . . and hadn't given much thought to how to complete them better.
