Programming the Cell Processor: For Games, Graphics, and Computation ReviewFirst and foremost, this is NOT a book for beginners. It's for experienced programmers who want to start working with the Cell processor. If that describes you, then you should buy this book immediately.
Every imaginable detail about the Cell is covered here. You'll learn how to write code, yes, but you'll also learn how that code works in terms of the Cell's physical architecture. This is crucial to understanding how best to harness the Cell's power. There are numerous diagrams and clear writing throughout, succinctly explaining what your code does and why it does it.
The book opens with a few chapters on setting up your work environment. This goes into great detail, walking you through installing Linux on a Windows PC or a Playstation 3 system, using gcc/make, acquiring and configuring the Cell SDK, debugging and simulating Cell applications, and setting up Eclipse and the Cell IDE. If you already know your way around Linux you'll be able to skip most of this, but if you're a Windows user (like me) this section will prove invaluable.
This is followed by in-depth technical discussions of the PPU (the Cell's primary processor) and the SPUs (the smaller, distributed processors at the heart of the Cell's power), how these communicate with each other, and how to optimize these communications. Sprinkled throughout are use cases for various functions in the Cell standard libraries; by the end of this section you should be able to program the Cell processor reasonably effectively.
While this book is focused on the Cell processor in general, it does recognize that perhaps the most ubiquitous application of the processor at present is the Playstation 3 system; to that end, the third and final section of the book is targeted at using the Cell processor for specifically game-related tasks: programming the frame buffer, using OpenGL, running the popular Ogre3D engine on the Cell, and using the COLLADA shared graphics file format and libraries. Depending on your focus, this section may or may not be useful, but either way its quality remains up to par with the rest of the book.
My only complaint is that the book's structure is not particularly conducive to use as a reference guide. That is, while it covers a significant portion of the Cell libraries and features, you can't just quickly look something up. The book's design seems to suggest a deep, initial read-through and then only occasional re-references thereafter. But perhaps supplementing it with the SDK's own documentation is sufficient. This is the only reason the book falls short of 5 stars for me, and of course your mileage may vary.
Overall, highly recommended for experienced programmers who want to start working with the Cell processor.Programming the Cell Processor: For Games, Graphics, and Computation OverviewMake the Most of IBM's Breakthrough Cell Processor in Any Gaming, Graphics, or Scientific ApplicationIBM's Cell processor delivers truly stunning computational power: enough to satisfy even the most demanding gamers and graphics developers. That's why Sony chose the Cell to drive its breakthrough PlayStation 3 and why Cell processors are at the heart of today's most powerful supercomputers. But many developers have struggled to create high-performance Cell applications: the practical, coherent information they need simply hasn't existed. Programming the Cell Processor solves that problem once and for all. Whether you're a game developer, graphics programmer, or engineer, Matthew Scarpino shows you how to create applications that leverage all the Cell's extraordinary power. Scarpino covers everything from the Cell's advanced architecture to its powerful tools and libraries, presenting realistic code examples that help you gain an increasingly deep and intuitive understanding of Cell development. Scarpino illuminates each of the Cell's most important technical innovations, introduces the commands needed to access its power, and walks you through the entire development process, including compiling, linking, debugging, and simulating code. He also offers start-to-finish case studies for three especially important Cell applications: games, graphics, and scientific computing. The Cell platform offers unprecedented potential, and this book will help you make the most of it. Scribus 1.3.5: Beginner's Guide ReviewThere are really two manuals currently available for Scribus, not counting Scribus Kompakt that is available only in German. The first was Scribus, the Official Manual by Gregory Pittman, Christoph Schäfer, et al. (ISBN 978-0-9560780-0-1). At around $45 it is a bit expensive, although profits go to further the development of Scribus, so when I bought it six months ago I didn't mind paying the price. The book here by Cédric Gémy is the second, published in December, 2010. I have been through both manuals thoroughly. Both are worth having if you're serious about desktop publishing with Scribus, although each serves a somewhat different function and approaches the subject differently.
Gémy's book is less expensive, especially if you buy the e-book format (downloadable in EPUB and PDF formats, available only at the publisher's website for around $25). Lest you think that you should buy the Pittman and Schäfer book so as to contribute to the Scribus project, Cédric Gémy is a frequent contributor to Scribus and has spent a lot of time helping with its development. I don't have any problem if his bank account increases a bit for his efforts.
Gémy teaches you how to use Scribus in a more or less tutorial fashion, where each chapter progresses in difficulty. In that respect it is less of a reference book than the Pittman and Schäfer manual. In fact, Gémy's book doesn't even have an index. On the other hand, if you are a beginner, a tutorial is exactly what you need. And Gémy does an excellent job of taking you by the hand, showing you how to do something step by step. He even includes quizzes at the end of each chapter. You can literally start at the beginning of the book and have Scribus pretty well mastered by the time you get to the end. "Beginner's Guide" is an apt title for Gémy's book.
Another advantage of Gémy's book is that it targets 1.3.5, where the Pittman and Schäfer book is written for 1.3.3.14. If you're not familiar with Scribus version numbers, 1.3.3.14 is the official stable version as of this writing (December, 2010), and the development version when Gémy's book was written was 1.3.5. The development version is currently at 1.3.9 and will become the new stable version at 1.4.0, due out in early 2011. Therefore, Gémy's book covers the new features you will find in the version you are probably going to use.
There are also advantages to the Pittman and Schäfer manual. For one thing, not being written in tutorial fashion it's easier to look up how to use a specific feature. More importantly, Pittman and Schäfer include a lot of things about desktop publishing that are not specific to Scribus. For example, do you know the difference between a spot color and process color, or the advantages and disadvantages of TIFF files over PSD files? Pittman and Schäfer not only tell you about a Scribus feature, but why it was included.
I never attended a brick and mortar school to learn about desktop publishing, but for the past 15 years I have been a charter student at the school of expensive mistakes. I started with PageMaker 4.0 and QuarkXPress 3.1 and have been using layout applications to produce student textbooks ever since. But even though Gémy's book is aimed at beginners, I found several helpful hints in it.
Today my favorite layout application is Scribus, not that its commercial competitors don't have a few more features (they do), but being in the open source world my documents are not hostage to forced expensive updates. If you have a substantial knowledge of desktop publishing, buy Gémy's book to get a quick introduction to Scribus. If you know nothing about desktop publishing, buy both.Scribus 1.3.5: Beginner's Guide OverviewThis book is a step by step guide packed with interesting examples and screenshots that cover lot of support options to help you achieve the superior quality documents. This books is divided into 11 chapters, each chapter dealing with a precise aspect of the software to help you have the best overview and make the best design choices for your document. This book is for people who want to create professional-looking documents with Scribus. If you want a great looking brochure, newsletter, or poster, this is the book for you. No experience of desktop publishing software is required - only creativity and enthusiasm for creating great documents!

Game Engine Gems, Volume One ReviewWhen one buys a "gem" series book, it is to learn specific, useful techniques for implementing systems and algorithms. The "gems" themselves are the sought-after ideas and theories, formed into concrete examples that can be applied to ones needs.
Unfortunately, this book does not live up to its "gems" titling, only serving to dilute that designation with weak content. Many of the chapters read as if they were written by high school students that attended a seminar on "game engine issues" and were forced to write a paper to prove they paid attention. In other words, the chapters will talk about how you would go about doing something and what would be desired in the final product, rather than describing how it is actually done. As such, many of the chapters are extremely short, some as short as 2-3 pages, and have sparse generalization information in them--hardly "gems."
This book should be retitled, and directed towards people who want to read about general issues and ideas in game engines. It's not a "gem" book by any means, and you're not going to glean any sophisticated techniques from the authors. I also have to wonder about that "5 star" first review given to this book, whether it was a shill review, because I can't expect any professional keeping this book on hand, let alone as a reference. I wish I had spent more time looking at the "Look Inside" preview before laying my money down for this mediocre book.Game Engine Gems, Volume One OverviewGame Engine Gems brings together in a single volume dozens of new articles from leading professionals in the game development industry. Each gem presents a previously unpublished technique related to game engines and real-time virtual simulations. Specific topics include rendering techniques, shaders, scene organization, visibility determination, collision detection, audio, user interface, input devices, memory management, artificial intelligence, resource organization, and cross-platform considerations. A CD-ROM containing all the source codes and demos accompanies the book.

Visualizing Information with Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007 ReviewI want you to think of the stereo typical college level professor who drones on while writing on the chalk board. Is the professor dumb? Of course not. Does he lack the ability to teach? Yes. This author portrays himself as a user who got tired of depending on IT for meaningful reports. I see this author as a geek's geek. He can quote Visual Basic in his sleep and does so throughout this text. However, this author lacks perspective. He thinks we all just take one look at his VB and a 100 watt light bulb pops-up over our heads. And just like a professor he drones on in his book without approaching a subject from a different perspective. If he's so good at Visio - why didn't he include example diagrams? Just to clarify - I have no problem with Visio books going into VB - my problem is when they don't approach the subject from multiple perspectives to reach more hearts and minds.Visualizing Information with Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007 Overview

Gnuplot in Action: Understanding Data with Graphs ReviewI have been using Gnuplot for more than twelve years, so I thought the
author could not tell me anything I did not know. I was completely
wrong. As it turned out, I did not know how to use color palettes
efficiently to visualize a structure in complex data.
Gnuplot became the tool of choice for many scientists and engineers.
It combines a powerful language, an intuitive and simple command
interface, publication quality graphics and the ability to quickly
generate many different plots for data exploration. It is free and
easily integrated with other programs (LaTeX, Octave, Maxima to name a
few). This book is a long awaited "Gnuplot bible" - a must for
anybody seriously working with numerical data. It is very well
written, the examples are carefully chosen and explained. It is
nicely typeset. The book is a pleasure to read or browse, which
becomes progressively rare for technical literature.
The book does not require a pre-existing knowledge of Gnuplot, and can
be used as a textbook for self-teaching or maybe as a part of a course
of data analysis and visualization. Nevertheless, it contains many
tips and tricks interesting not only for a novice, but also for a
seasoned user.
The book also contains a treatise on data graphing "in general", not
related specifically to Gnuplot. The principles discussed there are
sound, and could be of a general interest.
Gnuplot in Action: Understanding Data with Graphs Overview
Statistical data is only as valuable as your ability to analyze, interpret, and present it in a meaningful way. Gnuplot is the most widely used program to plot and visualize data for Unix/Linux systems and it is also popular for Windows and the Mac. It's open-source (as in free!), actively maintained, stable, and mature. It can deal with arbitrarily large data sets and is capable of producing high-quality, publication-ready graphics. So far, the only comprehensive documentation available about gnuplot is the online reference documentation, which makes it both hard to get started and almost impossible to get a complete overview over all of its features. If you've never tried gnuplot"or have found it tough to get your arms around"read on. Gnuplot in Action is the first comprehensive introduction to gnuplot"from the basics to the power features and beyond. Besides providing a tutorial on gnuplot itself, it demonstrates how to apply and use gnuplot to extract intelligence from data. Particular attention is paid to tricky or poorly-explained areas. You will learn how to apply gnuplot to actual data analysis problems. This book looks at different types of graphs that can be generated with gnuplot and will discuss when and how to use them to extract actual information from data. One of gnuplot's main advantages is that it requires no programming skills nor knowledge of advanced mathematical or statistical concepts. Gnuplot in Action assumes you have no previous knowledge of either gnuplot or statistics and data analysis. The books starts out with basic gnuplot concepts, then describes in depth how to get a graph ready for final presentation and to make it look "just right" by including arrows, labels, and other decorations. Next the book looks at advanced concepts, such as multi-dimensional graphs and false-color plots"powerful features for special purposes. The author also describes advanced applications of gnuplot, such as how to script gnuplot so that it can run unattended as a batch job, and how to call gnuplot from within a CGI script to generate graphics for dynamic websites on demand. Gnuplot in Action makes gnuplot easy for anyone who needs to do data analysis, but doesn't have an education in analytical tools and methods. It's perfect for DBAs, programmers, and performance engineers; business analysts and MBAs; and Six-Sigma Black Belts and process engineers. What's Inside: *Creating graphs with gnuplot * Data transformations and filters * Preparing/polishing graphs for final presentation * Publishing graphs in print or on the Web * Using gnuplot's power features * Gnuplot scripting and programming * Types of graphs and when to use them * Techniques of graphical analysis * How to build, install, and develop for gnuplot * Command and Option reference organized by concept

Visual Basic 2010 Unleashed ReviewLet me start by saying that I am Software Architect with over 30 years in the business, and have been through the entire MS suite. MASM, Visual Studio 6, Interdev, VS2003, VS2005, VS2008, VS2010 as well as the mobile side of the MS house - WindowsCE/Platform builder from version 2.11 to Version 5.0. For the most part I use C# as my primary programming language and do the WPF WCF Silverlight EF "thing" on a daily basis. Most of the books I read do a fairly good job on one or two topics, so you're forced to buy multiple books from different authors to cover all the material that you need. Sigh.
I typically buy and read 1 new programming book a month to keep up with the newest technology and features. Since I do some VB.Net programming I figured I would have a look at this book to see what's new. Based on its title, I was expecting just the usual programming basics in a VB paradigm- Classes, Inheritance, Polymorphism, yada yada, yada. Same old dribble. I was pleasantly surprised. The chapters regarding Linq (including PLinq), Tasks, WCF, Parallel Programming, Building and deploying applications to Azure were well thought out and lucid. There are also chapters on writing apps for WPF, Silverlight, and of course the class Winform stuff. All great! Even as a C# coder, I found all of this stuff extremely useful.
I downloaded the code samples that accompany this book. All of the chapters (including the chapters you have to download separately) have code samples as part of fully blown solutions. I took a random look at 10 chapters and made sure the solutions would load, and the code would compile and run. The author gets an A+ here! Everything worked with no problems. Solutions loaded, code compiled without errors and actually ran. How refreshing!
So now for general comments:
Some of the features and code in this book require the user to have something more than VS2010 Express. VS2010 is a little pricey, especially the Ultimate version.
I am not sure why the last 4 chapters (see the book index "Part X') are not published as part of the book. Maybe they were not ready when this book went to press? They have to be downloaded separately. These chapters are
Advanced IDE Features
Introducing the Visual Studio Extensibility
Advanced Analysis Tools
Testing Code with Unit Tests, Test-Driven Development, and Code Contracts
All of these chapters are worth reading.

This book does such an outstanding job covering topics other than the normal language syntax, that a section on Team Foundation Server(TFS) would make this book complete.
Even if VB.Net is not your primary language, this book still has something for anyone working in .NET. It's a keeper.
