Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR (Adobe Developer Library) Reviewthis book seems extremely "rushed" to me. ive found multiple typos. a lot of the images/figures in the book arent on the same page that they are referenced. the way that the sample script is written isnt the easiest to follow, as in it starts off building a custom class and shows the first few lines. then a page later 8-10 more lines of actionscript are added to the original lines, but only the new lines are shown. its not hard to determine where they go, well hasnt been for me, but i could see where this would be tricky for some. on the bright side, i am learning some things, but, like i said, this book kind of feels like it was rushed to get it out.Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR (Adobe Developer Library) Overview
Put your ActionScript 3 skills to work building mobile apps. This book shows you how to develop native applications for Android-based smartphones and tablets from the ground up, using Adobe AIR. You learn the entire development process hands-on, from coding specific functions to options for getting your app published.

Start by building a sample app with step-by-step instructions, using either Flash Professional or Flash Builder. Then learn how to use ActionScript libraries for typical device features, such as the camera and the accelerometer. This book includes ready-to-run example code and a case study that demonstrates how to bring all of the elements together into a full-scale working app.

Create functionality and content that works on multiple Android devices
Choose from several data storage options
Create view and navigation components, including a back button
Get tips for designing user experience with touch and gestures
Build a location-aware app, or one that makes use of motion
Explore ways to use audio, video, and photos in your application

Practical Android Projects (Books for Professionals by Professionals) ReviewGiven the popularity of the Android Platform, its Open Source development and the ubiquity of Smart Phones and Tablets there is little wonder that there have been a proliferation of perhaps a score of books by at least half-a-dozen publishers promising to teach you to develop Apps for the Android Environment--
But this project-oriented guide is Fun, Practical, Time-Saving and Mind-Expanding. While all of the basic tools of Android-Development assuming a knowledge of Java are clearly given (including all the steps to develop in three different IDE's (not just Eclipse), and the Architecture of the OS and Development Environment is fully described -- All in the first 2 chapters-- The CRITICAL & FUN DIFFERENCE in this book is the use of a variety of Practical Tools including multiple Non-Java languages are described and demonstrated. Cross Platform development for the Web is given in HTML Javascript and FLEX (Adobe Flash). RESTful Web Services are demonstrated with Twitter and Facebook and use of the Google App Engine is fully illustrated. Graphical and Animation tools are demonstrated for game development on Android Phones and Tablets.
Did you know that you can develop in BASIC, Python and the LUA scripting language (just like Warcraft) with plugins to the Java/Android environment? This book shows you how! Are you a weekend programmer who would rather use a graphical tool like the Android App Builder to build a salable App? This book shows you how to do that too! And as a hobbyist who wants to use RESTFUL and JSON interfaces to implement Internet of Things connections to Android Appliances -- This book showed me how to do that too.
I cannot say enough complementary things about this unique guide to building "Practical Android Projects" but I would begin by saying that it is FUN, USEFUL and it provides Unique Tools for Android Project Development not available in other texts.

Mobile Design and Development: Practical concepts and techniques for creating mobile sites and web apps (Animal Guide) ReviewOriginal review written by Pasquale Granato, JUG Lugano, [...] First of all, let's clear the field from a possible misunderstanding: this book is not about general mobile design and development but it is about web mobile development. The author states a precise, despite arguable, opinion that brutally said is: do not code native applications but prefer as much as you can web applications. This statement is largely discussed across the book and everyone can make up his own opinion about this. Mine is that currently times are not mature to consider to write just web applications both because mobile browser are not powerful enough (on average) to assure a smooth experience on all devices and because of the lack of a good way to make money from your web app.
The first three chapters of the book are a really good introduction to the history of mobile, to the mobile current status and to the reasons that should drive an approach to the mobile development. These chapters are a well written recap of the status of the art and present a lot of data useful to understand the global situation. Unfortunately the book is printed in black and white and several pie-charts and graphs are pretty much impossible to read.
The central part of the book, chapters from four to ten, is devoted to design issues and, despite the lack of an in-depth examination of some subjects, offers a pretty good survey of the topic.
The final part of the book is slightly more technical covering topics such as XHTML-MP, CSS, HTML5, device adaptation, etc. The problem here is that there is nothing really practical and all remains at an introductory level. To give you an example, a capital topic in device adaptation like Media Queries is covered in half a page with just a trivial example. Furthermore the author seems to be unaware of things like XwapProfile or UAProf (that is probably a obsolete and unreliable method but deserve at least a notation).
My biggest complain is anyway about the author's obsession for the iPhone. The Apple's jewel is referenced continuously and always with great glorification: the word iPhone recurs 99 times in the book and out of the 115 pictures in the book as many as 37 depict an iPhone. An entire chapter is devoted to iPhone web applications development even though most of the concepts presented here are common to other modern devices.
This is overall a decent introductory book, if you are completely new to the field, and it's packed with many good advices but do not expect much from the practical techniques promised by the title.Mobile Design and Development: Practical concepts and techniques for creating mobile sites and web apps (Animal Guide) OverviewMobile Design and Development by Brian Fling is a start to finish guide for designing and building mobile apps regardless of experience, device or platform. Brian took on the daunting challenge to write the mobile guide missing from bookshelves. As Brian describes it "this is a book that teaches people how to cook, not a collection of recipes."Since its release the book has been incredibly well received. It has being described as a "must have" by many experts in the mobile community. The 16 chapters, and 85,000 words within the book have helped thousands understand and dive into mobile. The first half is a crash course in the mobile ecosystem: how to develop a strategy, address the mobile context--even how to decide which of the multiple mobile application types is best for you, and finally, how to create a user experience for it. The second half is focused on using these principles to make a mobile website or web app.Mobile Design and Development is a comprehensive resource covering all aspects of the mobile ecosystem. The book covers a great number of topics, however each are described in practical and common sense way—making easy for anyone at any technical level to understand the inner working of the mobile medium.
