Sams Teach Yourself Cocoa Touch Programming in 24 Hours ReviewI was intrigued that Sams brought out two similar books together. I think they may be cannibalizing their own market share. There is no well known difference that I'm aware of between iPhone App Development and Cocoa Touch - one implies the other. So which one would you buy?
This books covers a lot of the same ground as their "iPhone Application Development" book, though now I see huge differences. Despite the back cover saying "Beginning-Intermediate" there is no way I would ever recommend this book to a beginner. In marked contrast to the other Sams book this seems to have been given a free editorial rein, such that it wanders all over, goes from beginner to very deep in the same chapter, and doesn't seem to have a cohesive aim for each chapter.
I have no problem with deeper material but a lot of it is not covered very well. For Cocoa design patterns see Buck and Yacktman; for Cocoa at a more basic level see Hillegass; for iPhone app dev in a more structured way see Ray/Johnson (Sams), Mark/LaMarche (Apress), or the Pragmatic Programmers book; for Obj-C see Kochan or the Apress title; for advanced iPhone apps see the Apress iPhone Cool Projects book.
For the intermediate or advanced developer there are some nuggets in here that I'm sure will be quite useful. There is no doubt the author is a knowledgeable person and he's covered a lot of material, some of which may not be covered elsewhere (notwithstanding my comments above). It's a book to dip into when you have a reasonably thorough knowledge of Obj-C and the Cocoa Touch frameworks, but as for teaching yourself in 24, cohesive, programmed, well thought out chapters then go to the other Sams book by Ray and Johnson.
(I don't know if it's coincidence but nearly all the best iPhone dev books seem to be co-authored. Perhaps the authors keep each other on track...)Sams Teach Yourself Cocoa Touch Programming in 24 Hours OverviewIn Full ColorCode samples are syntax highlighted as in Xcode!!In just 24 sessions of one hour or less, learn how to build powerful mobile applications with Apple's Cocoa Touch technology for the iPhone and iPod touch! iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone ReviewThe biggest problem with this book is that it addresses programming for the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware and was written prior to the official iPhone SDK being released. As a result it is already outdated with respect to many of the frameworks and APIs that aren't available in the official 1.2/2.0 firmware release and will most likely also be outdated in terms of the open toolchain, which is already changing to adapt to the SDK. So while the book has been helpful for me in getting up to speed with iPhone development pre-SDK (I have a draft PDF from O'Reilly), it is of little to no use now given the resources Apple has already made available for free at the iPhone Dev Center.iPhone Open Application Development: Write Native Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Overview
Certain technologies bring out everyone's hidden geek, and iPhone did the moment it was released. Even though Apple created iPhone as a closed device, tens of thousands of developers bought them with the express purpose of designing and running third-party software. In this clear and concise book, veteran hacker Jonathan Zdziarski -- one of the original hackers of the iPhone -- explains the iPhone's native environment and how you can build software for this device using its Objective-C, C, and C++ development frameworks.iPhone Open Application Development walks you through the iPhone's native development environment, offers an overview of the Objective-C language you'll use with it, and supplies background for the iPhone operating system. You also get detailed recipes and working examples for everyone's favorite iPhone features -- graphics and audio programming, interfaces for adding multitouch functionality to games, the use of hardware sensors, and the device's vast user interface kit. This book explains:

How to access the iPhone's underlying operating system
The makeup of an iPhone application
How to get the open source tool chain running on your desktop
The iPhone's core user interface framework, which is heavily tied to major application-level functions
Using the many touted iPhone features such as multitouch, hardware sensors, and gestures
Intercepting and handling event notifications for many iPhone-related events
Raw video surfaces and 3D transformations that take you deeper into advanced graphics on the iPhone
How to record and play simple sounds and intercept sound events
Advanced digital audio output using Apple's new Audio Toolbox framework
Advanced user interface components such as section lists, keyboards, and image manipulation

The Appendix includes a compendium of miscellaneous code examples for cool application features, such as using the camera and creating a CoverFlow®-like album browser. This book is a true hacker's book, designed for themillions of users who have run third party applications on their iPhone, but its concepts and code examples have shown to be remarkablysimilar to Apple's official SDK, making this book a valuable resource for both camps. Any programmer can use this book to write applications with the same spectacular effects that made the device an immediate hit, and impress users just as much as the official iPhone software does. That programmer can easily be you.

Mobile Design and Development: Practical concepts and techniques for creating mobile sites and web apps (Animal Guide) ReviewOriginal review written by Pasquale Granato, JUG Lugano, [...] First of all, let's clear the field from a possible misunderstanding: this book is not about general mobile design and development but it is about web mobile development. The author states a precise, despite arguable, opinion that brutally said is: do not code native applications but prefer as much as you can web applications. This statement is largely discussed across the book and everyone can make up his own opinion about this. Mine is that currently times are not mature to consider to write just web applications both because mobile browser are not powerful enough (on average) to assure a smooth experience on all devices and because of the lack of a good way to make money from your web app.
The first three chapters of the book are a really good introduction to the history of mobile, to the mobile current status and to the reasons that should drive an approach to the mobile development. These chapters are a well written recap of the status of the art and present a lot of data useful to understand the global situation. Unfortunately the book is printed in black and white and several pie-charts and graphs are pretty much impossible to read.
The central part of the book, chapters from four to ten, is devoted to design issues and, despite the lack of an in-depth examination of some subjects, offers a pretty good survey of the topic.
The final part of the book is slightly more technical covering topics such as XHTML-MP, CSS, HTML5, device adaptation, etc. The problem here is that there is nothing really practical and all remains at an introductory level. To give you an example, a capital topic in device adaptation like Media Queries is covered in half a page with just a trivial example. Furthermore the author seems to be unaware of things like XwapProfile or UAProf (that is probably a obsolete and unreliable method but deserve at least a notation).
My biggest complain is anyway about the author's obsession for the iPhone. The Apple's jewel is referenced continuously and always with great glorification: the word iPhone recurs 99 times in the book and out of the 115 pictures in the book as many as 37 depict an iPhone. An entire chapter is devoted to iPhone web applications development even though most of the concepts presented here are common to other modern devices.
This is overall a decent introductory book, if you are completely new to the field, and it's packed with many good advices but do not expect much from the practical techniques promised by the title.Mobile Design and Development: Practical concepts and techniques for creating mobile sites and web apps (Animal Guide) OverviewMobile Design and Development by Brian Fling is a start to finish guide for designing and building mobile apps regardless of experience, device or platform. Brian took on the daunting challenge to write the mobile guide missing from bookshelves. As Brian describes it "this is a book that teaches people how to cook, not a collection of recipes."Since its release the book has been incredibly well received. It has being described as a "must have" by many experts in the mobile community. The 16 chapters, and 85,000 words within the book have helped thousands understand and dive into mobile. The first half is a crash course in the mobile ecosystem: how to develop a strategy, address the mobile context--even how to decide which of the multiple mobile application types is best for you, and finally, how to create a user experience for it. The second half is focused on using these principles to make a mobile website or web app.Mobile Design and Development is a comprehensive resource covering all aspects of the mobile ecosystem. The book covers a great number of topics, however each are described in practical and common sense way—making easy for anyone at any technical level to understand the inner working of the mobile medium.

Professional Xcode 3 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI hesitated a bit before buying this because a later version of XCode is out and because I wasn't sure how much I would need the material in this book. Thankfully, I went ahead and purchased the book despite these concerns. I'm just a bit past page 100 and I can see that the book will more than pay for itself just in increased productivity. Much of the info/shortcuts/tips weren't covered in other materials I've used, yet they will be quite helpful. Although there will be differences between the older and newer XCode, I don't really think it will affect a significant amount of this material (at least so far). Even if it did, I wouldn't regret getting this book because I'm sure I will be able to figure out the (probably slight) changes between the different versions. Really, just knowing some of the features/shortcuts are there is worth the price of the book. If you have months to explore XCode on a full time basis, you might pick up various parts of this material (no where near all of it, I'm sure) on your own, but this book is like your own (efficient!) guided tour which provides clear explanations, a lasting reference, and even some ideas for how to use features you may not have known existed. Like I said, I'm barely past page 100, yet I can already say this book is well worth the money I paid & the time I have/will invest reading it. I highly recommend this book.Professional Xcode 3 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewA solid guide that responds to the active interest in Apple's Xcode tools
Apple's Xcode tools are a collection of applications and frameworks that are used to develop, test, and optimize applications primarily written for Mac OS X or the iPhone. Just Enough Software Architecture: A Risk-Driven Approach ReviewThis a broad and deep book on all things software architecture except the architecting process (for process, one recommended read is "Process Software Architecting" by Eeles/Cripps). Several readerships will benefit from "Just Enough Software Architecture":
- As an experienced IT architect, I do not necessarily agree with everything in the book (this does not come as a surprise, as architects have opinions). That said, I certainly learned a lot that I can apply immediately on my projects and some of the more provocative statements challenge me to leave my comfort zone (or at least consider doing so).
- Junior architects can use the book both as a tutorial and as a reference when/while growing in their profession.
- Developers with a "who needs architects" mindset (hopefully) will understand architects and modelers much better after having read this book, and appreciate the value of archtecture.
Things I liked in particular:
- Overall vision and message of pragmatism sent
- The risk-driven approach increases chances to get accepted both in agile development and in more traditional architecture communities
- There is a lot of practical advice e.g. in Chapters 10, 11 and 15
- The author is in command of a large body of relevant related work (both industra and academia) and puts them in perspective adequately
- Editorial quality: structure, figures, command of the English language (some words and expressions a bit be hard to comprehend for non-native speaker)
Some room for improvements (2nd edition?):
- Not all metaphors and analogies work internationally, e.g. not all IT people are sports fans that follow baseball or know what a rookie is
- The connection between parts 1 and 2 could be a bit stronger, even if loose coupling generally is a good thing; e.g., some more backward references
In summary, I'd say Just Enough Software Architecture is a highly recommended read for every architect in touch with development reality and every developer with a desire to build complex systems that will stand the test of time.Just Enough Software Architecture: A Risk-Driven Approach OverviewThis is a practical guide for software developers, and different than other software architecture books. Here's why:
It teaches risk-driven architecting. There is no need for meticulous designs when risks are small, nor any excuse for sloppy designs when risks threaten your success. This book describes a way to do just enough architecture. It avoids the one-size-fits-all process tar pit with advice on how to tune your design effort based on the risks you face.
It democratizes architecture. This book seeks to make architecture relevant to all software developers. Developers need to understand how to use constraints as guiderails that ensure desired outcomes, and how seemingly small changes can affect a system's properties.
It cultivates declarative knowledge. There is a difference between being able to hit a ball and knowing why you are able to hit it, what psychologists refer to as procedural knowledge versus declarative knowledge. This book will make you more aware of what you have been doing and provide names for the concepts.
It emphasizes the engineering. This book focuses on the technical parts of software development and what developers do to ensure the system works not job titles or processes. It shows you how to build models and analyze architectures so that you can make principled design tradeoffs. It describes the techniques software designers use to reason about medium to large sized problems and points out where you can learn specialized techniques in more detail.
It provides practical advice. Software design decisions influence the architecture and vice versa. The approach in this book embraces drill-down/pop-up behavior by describing models that have various levels of abstraction, from architecture to data structure design.

Xcode 4 (Developer Reference) ReviewOk, I have finished almost 75% of the book. I find it amazing, full of useful information and well-organized.
Good things:
1. Many parts are detailed. This is good when writing a book on IDE.
2. You will use as a reference. Yes, you'll read certain parts again and again from time to time. It Is a Developer Reference.
3. Almost every aspect of Xcode 4 is illustrated with figures and detailed steps. However, advanced features are not explained.
Bad things:
1. I think the first edition is considering Xcode 4. That Xcode "4.0" not 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 or 4.1". There are differences and they are not minors.
2. that's it.
I'd recommend this book for beginners and intermediate developer (like me). For advanced developers, it may not offer so much.
