Apprenticeship in Literacy ReviewIf you liked Guided Reading by Fountas and Pinnell, you'll REALLY enjoy this book. It includes not only easy to understand philosophy, but exacting implementation suggestions (pictures, too) along with excellent teacher language you'll want to use in conjunction with the explicit guided reading and writing suggestions for every level: emergent, early and fluent. I'm a Reading Recovery teacher who also works with literacy groups and think this is the best classroom balanced literacy book I've seen to date.

An apprenticeship approach to literacy emphasizes the role of the teacher in providing demonstrations, engaging children, monitoring their understanding, providing timely support and, ultimately, withdrawing that support as the child gains independence.
