The Art of 3-D Computer Animation and Effects, 3rd Edition ReviewI think that this book gives an excellent and in depth review of the CG Animation World. Yes, two chapters are about the history of CG: they will tell you where you come from and make you understand better where you are now.
I don't know who this hwilliamsx comes from, and what he is doing in VA, I'm an Animation Supervisor working at Imageworks for the past seven years and I am a Faculty Member at Calarts for three, my personal opinion is that this book is a must have.

Pro Apache Beehive (Expert's Voice in Java) ReviewI have been using beehive since it was in alpha, but, I still found some parts of this book informative, enough to where I may have to change one of my applications, to make it better.
I did find that there was too much talk about BEAs product, but, for those that may be coming from that framework to beehive, this may be important.
Understanding how to use the various development tools, such as Pollinate, is useful, so their coverage of that is reasonable.
I do think that if you are looking for an intro to intermediate book on beehive this is a fantastic book.Pro Apache Beehive (Expert's Voice in Java) OverviewThe primary audiences for this book are developers and software architects who are looking to get exposure to the Apache Beehive project, and other related projects. This book covers the Apache Beehive project and projects closely related to this - such as XMLBeans, Pollinate etc. We will cover Page Flows, Controls, JSR 181 Web Services and XMLBeans technologies. The book will also talk about how these technologies are used in WebLogic Workshop, and how other IDE's are extending support for these technologies (Pollinate project from Eclipse).

Mastering Delphi 6 ReviewI have little to say other than this book is exceptional. All items are well covered and specific emphasis is placed on the latest changes to the Delphi IDE as well as the latest new features in Delphi 6 (which are superb).
The code examples are clear, bug free and pertinent to the topic at hand. The author's style of writing is superb. His tone is set at the right level, being both factual and very readable. The moment the book arrived, I couln't put it down.
I was a little annoyed that the section on the Pascal language was relegated to the CD, and I felt the section on SQL was sparse (also in pdf format, and on the CD only). However one could validly argue that this book is geared towards the intermediate + level of programmer, and the reader should already be familiar with these topics.
Advanced programmers (a status which I have not yet attained) may be disappointed with topics covered in the client/server sections.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 ReviewIn her typically superb fashion, Sue has crafted an indispensable reference that digs into the internals of Outlook. A few topics discussed: How Outlook stores data, User Profiles, PRF files (what are those? Buy the book to find out) security, and more.
One of the things that really stood out to me in this book was the Appendixes where you'll find details on policy settings, outlook registry settings and even how to disable various portions of the Outlook user interface.
Another excellent resource is chapter 5 that deals with Exchange connectivity. Outlook has steadily added new ways to talk to Exchange, all with their own set of Pro's and Con's. Personally, I think many companies have overlooked some of the options. All of the other books appear to be based on beta versions. Something to keep in mind.
The author tackles the subject of the book in a detailed yet concise manner and this makes for an interesting read. I would definitely recommend this to people migrating to SQL Server, people new to the system, and people upgrading to the latest version.

As I mentioned above, I'm a software developer and I just want my hardware to work. One of the hardest things for me to do would be to try and build a computer from scratch. But watching my son (who has no fear of hardware) has made me a bit more at ease with it. And with this book, I think I could actually try it. Each of the chapters gives an excellent explanation about how that piece of hardware works and how it fits into the larger picture of a full computer. For instance, in the CD chapter you'll get an understandable write-up of how information is stored and read on a CD-ROM disk. Then they transition into how a DVD is read and how the drive functions. And I actually understood it!
The only place where I thought this book was a little weak is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of upgrade or repair instructions. I expected more along the lines of step-by-step pictures and instructions on how to replace or repair certain parts in your machine. There is some of that towards the end when you get into the Diagnosis and Repair chapters, but little as you're working through the book. Some buyers might be a little upset that the title doesn't quite mesh with the content of the book. Still, the actual content *is* quite good... just not what you might expect.
Overall, I like the book a lot as it helps me understand my computer hardware better than I did before. Just a minor deduction for possible title and content confusion...PC Upgrade and Repair Bible Overview

Excel 2002 Bible ReviewHaving used Excel for a number of years and various other Excel guides, I have been disappointed each time I have tried to use this book.
The worst feature? The index. Any reference book should be able to point you to where you want to go, but with only one description of most functions -- and you have to guess at which word the author will choose to pick for the index -- you're often spending more time trying to figure out the "bible" than you would if you were just fiddling with Excel on your own.

Reviewing the table of contents alone will make the impression.
Unlike other anthologies, this volume has decent margins and is printed on solid paper stock. If you like marking your texts or putting notes in the sidebar, there is enough room to do so, and the leakage between pages is minimal. Additionally, I found the volume to be solidly bound; for research & reading when you're constantly opening & closing the book, this is critical.
Additionally, almost every selection has a useful bibliography, thus this is a great introductory volume. The introductions to each section/theme are also well done. Software Quality Assurance: From Theory to Implementation ReviewAlthough written as a college text (the publisher also has instructor manual, syllabus and discussion guidelines, and test material), this book sufficiently reflects real world SQA to be used by working practitioners. My review focus is on the latter use.
Chapters that will be of interest to real world SQA include Chapter 3. Software Quality Factors (excellent foundation for a metrics initiative), Chapter 5. Contract Review (checklists for proposal and contract review are excellent), Chapters 7 (Integrating Quality Activities in the Project Life Cycle - especially the model for SQA defect removal effectiveness and cost) and 8 (Reviews, which includes supporting templates), and Chapter 11. Assuring The Quality of Software Maintenance, which is an often overlooked aspect of SQA.
Note that this book has been written to support ISO 9001 and contains chapters that are specifically slanted towards that approach. Included are chapters on document and configuration control, auditing, and attaining ISO 9001 certification. The author also provides solid information on ISO/IEC Quality Assurance standards, IEEE/ANSI Standards, and MIL-STD-498, as well as on common assessment approaches (CMM and SPICE).
