The Black Ship ReviewThis is definitely one of the best books I've read on the left hand path (and I've read many). Unlike most books in this genre, the author provides a congruent paradigm in which the practices relate.
As the author says in his introduction, this book is really aimed at practitioners with experience, but having said that; I would recommend it to anyone starting out in the left hand path - I wish it had been available to me 20 years ago.
The beauty of the book is that is not dogmatic, nor does it give many 'cut and dried' rituals. This is left to the inventiveness of the practitioner. What it does do however is give a excellent paradigm in which to advance through the dark path. Some parts of the practice don't appeal to me personally (the veneration of ancestors for example) but the author does give solid reasons for their inclusion, and, like so much of the rest of the material could easily be adapted.
Some of the authors ideas are quite 'out there' but no less excellent for all that.
Overall well worth a five star rating. This is a serious book for serious practitioners and not for the casual dabbler; but then to be fair, a dabbler wouldn't be able to use this book since it focuses so much on inner introspection and self knowledge. The Black Ship OverviewPart grimoire and part manifesto, The Black Ship presents the vision of the Pandemonium Mandala, teaches the lore of the emergent Daemonic race and is the blueprint for a culture based on Left-Hand Path principles. It begins with such basics as the invocation of the personal Daemon and new ways of consecrating working tools and personal space before exploring work with Ancestral spirits, the Mysteries of the Lesser and Greater Sabbats, the Sacrament of the Royal Blood of Chaos and the techniques of Transmogrification. It then explores the Daemonic rationale underlying new conceptions of politics, law and the evolutionary implications of space migration. Finally, The Black Ship concludes with a Chaosmological vision of this universe that both relates to and differs from ancient Gnostic teachings, with some new elements that may surprise.

The Reactor Factor: How to Handle Difficult Work Situations Without Going Nuclear (Wiley) ReviewThis book is explosive and the best of Marsha Petrie Sue's efforts! The Reactor Factor combines the isotopes of humor, straight-talk, and wisdom into a powerful fusion blast! There is more power between the pages of this book than any self-help career guide on the market. Each particle of knowledge is as basic as any atomic elements, but they are presented in a manner where atomic fusion is created and megatons of energy are safely released.
Her universally sound, "Take it, Leave it or Change it," is advice which can profoundly improve the effectiveness you may acheive when interacting with those who otherwise would cause you to go Nuclear. The formula is simple, but prophetic.
Whether dealing with the human thinking process, satisfying one's boss, presentation skills, or customer service, you can avoid the uncontrollable nuclear chain reacton and a major meltdown, by learning and following the advice Marsha is dispensing here. The atomic particles in The Reactor Factor are your key to energy generation in a safe mode, without radioactive decay.

An Integrative Approach to Counseling: Bridging Chinese Thought, Evolutionary Theory, and Stress Management (Multicultural Aspects of Counseling And Psychotherapy) Review"I imagine future thinkers in whom European-American indefatigability is combined with the hundredfold inherited contemplativeness of the Asians: such a combination will bring the riddle of the world to a solution. In the meantime the reflective free spirits have their mission: they are to remove all barriers that stand in the way of a coalescence of human beings." (Friedrich Nietzsche, 1876 from the book Nietzsche and Asian Thought by Graham Parkes.) It took over 100 years Friedrich, but the book was worth waiting for! Thank you professor Santee for making the "Bridge" so easy to cross. I felt like I was eavesdropping on a conversation between Eastern and Western thinkers. An Integrative Approach to Counseling: Bridging Chinese Thought, Evolutionary Theory, and Stress Management (Multicultural Aspects of Counseling And Psychotherapy) OverviewAn Integrative Approach to Counseling: Bridging Chinese Thought, Evolutionary Theory, and Stress Management offers a global and integrative approach to counseling that incorporates multiple concepts and techniques from both eastern and western perspectives. The book identifies commonalities rather than the differences between them. The book also compares and contrasts the underlying cultural assumptions of western counseling with those of the Chinese perspectives of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, relative to integrating and applying a more global approach to helping individuals functionally adapt to challenges in their environments. The book will be used by faculty and students in those advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology, counseling, or social work that cover such areas as introduction to counseling, counseling skills and techniques, counseling theories, multi-cultural awareness and counseling, and stress management.

The Art of Effortless Living: Do Less, Let Go, and Discover Health, Emotional Well-Being, and Happiness ReviewI'll admit I'm a tough audience when it comes to popular self-help books. The themes are predictable, repetitious, derivative. So the value of the text largely comes down to a question of the author's rhetoric.
Though a practitioner of the Alexander technique, Bacci is open to numerous complementary systems, most particularly those Eastern views of self that emphasize "being" over "doing," that locate success and failure in personal consciousness, not in individual performance or in the products of the Western Puritanical work ethic. Through numerous engaging examples, illustrations, explanations she manages to be an effective and inspirational "coach-teacher." While making it clear that living effortlessly requires the effort of concentration and practice, she makes the goal seem both worth while and accessible.
Besides stressing and suggesting ways of heightening personal consciousness, Professor Bacci incorporates many elements from what used to be called "transactional analysis." Once we stop trying to prove our worth through our accomplishments, we can began to approach human relationships from a more mature, less exasperating perspective. More often than not, her points strike home. And when she comes up with an occasional lame illustration, she almost invariably follows it up with a real "zinger." I can attest that I felt energized and empowered after reading some of the chapters.
While Professor Bacci's approach strikes me as a valuable counterbalance to the present-day obsession with measuring success and failure in the materialist terms of society at large, the reader may at the same time feel compelled to qualify some of her own positions as extreme. For example, focusing on what we feel in the moment can certainly lead to heightened consciousness and increased self-awareness. At the same time, happiness is as likely to be a by-product of the pursuit of a goal external to the self as the object of pursuit itself. Also, while it is true that confronting, or "being with," the experience of pain can paradoxically release constricted nerve centers in the body (here Bacci sounds a bit like an Eastern-trained massage therapist discussing "chi"), there are other situations where being pain's silent witness does not necessarily assure its removal (think of an exploding bladder or acute gastric distress).
Finally, the reader should not lose sight of the "effort" preceding Bacci's own discovery of effortless living. Sensing that being an academic and a wife forced her to live "roles" at odds with her authentic self, as manifested in crippling physical illnesses, the author simply abandoned both roles in favor of the genuine, healthy person she now is. Others may not find a change this radical either so practical or so effective as the author apparently did.The Art of Effortless Living: Do Less, Let Go, and Discover Health, Emotional Well-Being, and Happiness Overview

Taking Charge of Adult ADHD ReviewAs a researcher and expert on ADHD, and an ADHDer myself, I've read many books on the topic and written many book reviews. When I was asked to review Dr. Russell Barkley's latest book, Taking Charge of Adult ADHD, for Psych Central, I wasn't sure I'd learn anything new. I was delighted and astonished in every section of the book. Barkley's level of insight, wisdom, and sheer depth of understanding about the mind of an ADHDer is nothing short of brilliant.
The only downside I see is that the book is so packed with profound insights, practical advice, and useful information, that it could have been six books rather than one. For an ADHDer, this is difficult to digest. I'd suggest taking it slowly, ruminating over each section (or page), practicing and applying its insights in your own life and situation, and then moving on...slowly. While the book is dense, it's well worth the effort it might take to suck the juice out of its succulent pages. If necessary, enlist a friend to read it to you, discuss it with you, and otherwise help you glean all you can from its incredible wisdom. If you put the effort into it, you won't be sorry.

The Llewellyn Complete Book of Psychic Empowerment: A Compendium of Tools & Techniques for Growth & Transformation ReviewThe Llewellyn Complete Book of Psychic Empowerment by Carl Llewellyn Weschcke and Joe H. Slate, Ph.D. is a definite must have book for everyone that wants to improve their psychic skills, or just learn more about it.
This is an extremely well written and easy to follow book about a large amount of subjects in the esoteric field. Not everything is included, but it is already over 600 pages, so including everything just wouldn't be realistic. That is okay though, because what is included in this book, is quite detailed and explains what you would want to know about it (for the most part), and also gives examples on actually using it to help with your growth in that area.
This book was co-written by a professor and it at times does read and look like one. I like to think of it as a Psychic Empowerment 101 course. The only difference is that you can read it, and use the tools detailed in it at your own pace. Plus, it is much cheaper than a college course or textbook would be!
My favorite parts in the book included the aura reading, astral projection, tarot reading, crystal gazing, and meditation sections. I learned new types of exercises to use with these areas that were quite effective and enjoyable.
Even though this is a very large book, and might be a little bit intimidating for some to pick up and read, trust me, it is well worth it! This is one of the best books I have ever read about the subjects included in it, and I highly recommend it for everyone to read.
This will be a classic book used for generations to come. Consider it a must have resource or textbook for everyone that wants to expand their psychic skills.* Thank you to the publisher of The Llewellyn Complete Book of Psychic Empowerment, Llewellyn, for providing me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions expressed are my own.The Llewellyn Complete Book of Psychic Empowerment: A Compendium of Tools & Techniques for Growth & Transformation Overview

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity ReviewOK, first I have to admit I picked up the book at a local Border's where I had a copy on reserve. Having said that... I think I've tried every 'system' for organizing yourself out there. In the 80's it was Day-Timer and Day-Runner. Good calenders and address books, but not much else. 90's was Covey, and Franklin planning. Now we have 'roles and goals' which helps with long term planning but both systems were very inflexible when it came to planning your day to day stuff. I can remember Covey wanting me to plan out my entire week in advance. Nice in theory, but nowhere near reality for those of us whose jobs tend to be more 'crisis-oriented'. I've also tried Agenda, Ecco, Outlook, etc. but its hard to lug around your PC or laptop all the time. About two years ago I came across David Allen's tape seminar and I have to say its the best system I've ever found for organizing 'all' of your life. I can't say it's changed my life (I still have the same job, wife and kids and I still procrastinate too much ) but its certainly made all the difference in me being finally, actually organized on day-to-day basis. I'm now the only one in my office with a clean desk :)
The book covers just about the same material that I learned in the tape series. The tapes have more anecdotes and 'real-life' examples in them, but the book has a few new pearls and tricks that tells me David's been refining and polishing this system since the tape series.
Two last quick points: first, it requires no special binders or refills. You could use a cheap spiral notebook if you want. Personally, I use a palmpilot, which works well. Second, (IMHO) the Weekly Review is the cornerstone of making this system work, and its worked for me for two years. Remember that; it'll make sense once you read the book :) Now if I could only get David to come up with a system for procrastination....Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity Overview
